Best Online Backup Service For Your PC?

How about some recommendations. My automatic backup just stopped without any warning that the subscription was about to expire, or even that it had. This is the second time this has happened with the company I use so I'm looking for a replacement.

I want a reliable, economical service that will back up the files on my PC to their online server.

Any suggestions?

I like Mozy, 2GB free, reasonable above that.

    Carbonite is very good also.

As long as you are backing up a PC and no network drives/shares, these work very well.

    Both have free trials.

I am an affiliate of both, plus others, but I like these two best - if you want a link, PM me

Carbonite is the one I have a problem with.

They offer unlimited storage at a flat rate, where Moby has upcharges.

But, this is the second time they have canceled for non-payment, without ever sending a "friendly reminder." It's a pain in the gazitchka to have to re-open the account while my mind is on other topics.

The "no reminder" thing is worse than NetworkSolutions one day reminder before automatic billing. At least theirs is sixty days before service expiration which gives me a chance to find another registrar. Don't fuss because I was using the high end guys, it is the tail end of a ten year registration that I signed up for when I were just starting.

MozyHome is unlimited storage for $55/yr - no upcharges.

I think you're confusing it with MozyPro - the business backup solution that charges by the GB.

I've had good experiences with both Carbonite & Mozy. Even having to do a dreaded full restore on a machine. Worked like a champ.

I use hotfile cos of the unlimited disk space. But I found that the upload is very slow. May be due to my slow broadband.

I am happy using dropbox cos the data are automatically updated. It is very easy to use. Try it for free and if you like it, you can upgrade for more disk space.

My hard drive died a week ago and I haven't backed up in a while, so you can imagine the nightmare that followed?

Luckily, I haven't been updating my business folder a lot lately, so most of it was in the back up.

But unfortunately, I produced two really cool songs this week and worked really hard to make them sound great - lost. Forever. My heart still aches..

So I was looking around for a service like this. So -thanks for the suggestions guys, will try Carbonite.

    Take care,

I have three sets of data since I've lost several PC's in the past couple of years. Rootkit virus, Ask.com toolbar and a direct lightning strike to name some of the reasons. I did use Carbonite to restore on one of the hits, but it was slow. The other time I was able to recover the HD. It was faster ... one day at the repair shop versus two weeks of download from Carbonite.

So, I got a WesternDigital World (?) networked HD and a laptop, plus the Carbonite. Then I got GoodSync from Siber Systems (the RoboForm folkses) and have GoodSync set up to do almost complete backups to my networked HD and my laptop, and my online was being handled by Carbonite ... until they disappeared again, without notice.

I can totally understand where you're coming from, which is why I got paranoid and set up a triple system. One on-site, one on and off, and one totally off.

Mozy saved my bacon several times recently when a hard drive read error wiped some current files (never hibernate Windows then boot into Linux kids). I still have the free plan and only back up my most vital work files. There's certainly no need to back up your system files and whatnot and it'll take waaaay too long anyway. Though note that Mozy only keeps a rotating archive around a month old (actually, seems to be a little longer in practice) so if you lose or delete a file you've got to REALISE you did within the one month time-frame or it disappears from the archive.
I also run a bigger nightly backup off my main PC and onto a big hard drive I set up on a networked computer - multiple redundancy, gotta be done.

        Hey,

Unfortunately, I also have had my share of losing data. One time the reason was a virus, on another occasion a computer crash played a dirty trick on me.

I'm more careful now, by using an external hd for back up. If it's time to backup, then I run a viruskiller. If it seems that my system is clean, then I'm connecting the external hd, save, then I'm unbuckling that hd immediately. This works for me so far.

        All the best,

        Sandor

Congratulations, you're already ahead of most other people.

However, do you store your laptop and your external HD in the same place (house, office, etc)?

          fire, theft, flood, etc.

One nice thing about Mozy backup is it will simultaneously backup to your external HD AND backup to their online storage.

          Best,
          PCRoger

I have to give another vote to Amazon S3. It's quite cheap and very reliable. I run daily backups using a program called Duplicity. I can't recommend any programs that run under windows as I haven't used any personally.

I am back up obsessed, so I use Mozy for full back up, Dropbox for my documents, pictures etc, burn to CD and have several usb sticks. The importance of backup was brought home to me when my boss had her laptop stolen and lost many family photos and personal documents that she hadnt backed up.

I suggest Handy Backup by Novosoft, it provides both online backup software and online backup services, lets you back up data to a secure offsite location which is very safe and worldwide accessible.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your suggestions. I'll be studying everyone's pitch page and spec sheet for a bit.

One requirement is that they can economically and quickly handle two terabytes of data, so it'll be interesting to see what the services are like.

Woah! I don't think you mentioned terabytes of data! Some services like Mozy will take literally WEEKS to upload that much data (initially). Sounds like you need a more professional-grade solution. Some services may have the option for you to courier them a hard disk etc. Then once all your data is up, the actual syncing doesn't take nearly so long.

You are correct. I failed to mention the amount of data I have. It was an oversight. Actually, I only have a little over one terabyte of data, but I am currently using a two terabyte drive and the way things go, I can foresee filling it up.

And, you are also correct, the upload time is weeks to get started and weeks to get down, which I found out once when I did have to use Carbonite for a restore.

I have not used carbonite yet but after reading a few of positive comments about it I might check it out. I only use Dropbox right now and all are swift even the uploading as it works in the background.
