I recently bought a new computer and it just has a trial version of Microsoft office. I only used one program from Msoft office which is word. Is there a cheaper word program that will open .doc documents?

You might look into the free collaborative project:

    Download OpenOffice

It recreates the functions of the office suit.

    I highly recommend Open Office.

It's made by Sun which makes Java, and they're huge so you know you can obviously trust them. Plus the OOS (Open Office Suite) contains the same setup as the Microsoft Office Suite.

You can hardly tell the difference between Open Office and MS Office. Sure there are some visual differences in the programs, but they function pretty much the same. And Open Office will open the MS Office documents just like MS Office and vice versa.

If you don't want to pay for MS Office, then download Open Office and don't look back.

Google docs is completely online. It can't replace MS Office

Absolutely go with Open Office. One great bonus feature of it is you can export any document as a pdf document.

I don't know squat about this open-office, it sounds rally good and you should probably take the advice of these forum members.
I do however have a question for you-
If you bought a new computer, what are you using as an operating system? Maybe a more precise question would be after this trial ends..
I mean, you need some form of OS...don't you?
I am only talking from common sense here but if you will anyway have an operating system on your computer after this trial ends (im assuming you will...:confused, why not keep the word?
Yikes this post came out so wierd but I think I get my question across well enough.
      I'm just wondering is all.

I think you're getting confused with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows.

Office is a complete productivity suite which includes a spreadsheet, database, word processor, etc

Windows is the actual Operating System (OS) that you need to run all your programs.

Another vote here for OpenOffice since it allows you to turn 'word' documents into sweet PDF's in seconds. I've also used the OpenOffice version of excel and powerpoint with no issues. And the price is perfect - FREE!
