Hey Warriors

I am Totally Confused on Hostgators cPanel---I am not sure what step I have to do to get Hostgator to make my site visible on the internet --- I upload the files with Filezilla and go to my hostgator cPanel and the files are tranfered ok ---But when I type my domain name into the browser I get a Hostgator 404 or a cgn-bin blank page---I am at this point just trying to test and delete to learn how to use cpanel and Filezilla --I believe I am operating Filezilla ok ---(This is what I am typing into the Filezilla Host:--ftp.domainname.com/public_html/subdomainname---- Username: my cPanel username----- Password: My cPanel Password---I believe I am not setting something in cpanel correctly---I have read the quick start guide and watched the videos and have emailed hostgator (they sent me my ftp address) I am still "TOTALLY CONFUSED" after two day's of trying to learn uploading----I guess my next step is calling Hostgator ??

I would appreciate if anyone could help*** if you know of any better cpanel instructions --I learn best with step by step screen shots --But at this point I will try anything to solve this problem---- I have Google it and have not come up with much good help !!!!

I would appreciate any help or instructions ---Thank You ---Debra

A few things I learned when I first started using CPanel. (I use Host Gator as well)

    - Sometimes when I transfer my files over, it can take a bit to show. I've had to wait as much as an hour or so before for the "trickle-down effect"

    - Did you place the files you want displayed within the public.html folder? (Login to your FTP to see if that folder is empty or not?

    - Do you have your index file in place?

Check those items and let us know...

Is your domain registered elsewhere - and, if so, did you repoint the dns to your hostgator account? (very basic, but it's a place to start)

I use coreftp lite (free) as an ftp program because it is the simplest one I've found anywhere.

If you go into your cpanel file manager - does it show any files uploaded? If not, the problem is what you are entering in the ftp program. That info is simple - but must be exact or doesn't work.

Easy way top upload would be to go to cpanel, file manager, public_html, the subdomain folder - and then upload the files directly there. Takes a few minutes but that should work with no problem to transfer files from your computer to your cpanel.

The ftp host would be ftp.domain.com and would not include the folders as you would navigate to those in most ftp programs.

Hope I haven't confused you further - but this sounds like just an error in entering ftp info.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

      Voiceofreason---Thank you for the response

I quess I do not understand cPanel at all---I entered my domain url again and still get a Hostgator Page 404

Yes I do place the files in public_html folder on Filezilla wright ??

I am not sure ---how do I login to my FTP to see if the folder is empty ??? I go to my FTP account in cPanel and the download host from Filezilla is listed there but I can not open to see what files are there!!!

I am not sure what you mean about having my index folder in place ???

I would appreciate if you would answer these questions----But it looks like I have to study cpanel more --- I would like to know if anyone knows if there are any better instructions than hostgator guide and video's-- ThanksAgain Debra

Their live chat has been my savior and guide into this totally new and awesome vista. To say I'm hooked is an understatement.
Have you checked out Hostgaor tutorials, they've helped me tremendously? Just google hostgator.com tutorials.
I've had success when I uploaded to the www folder.

Hope I've not misled you, if so, veteran "warriors" pls correct me.

          Cheers

I have been a Hostgator customer for years, and their cPanel seems to work just like most cPanels.
I think the best place to direct support issues is to the Hostgator support staff. They are usually VERY helpful.

PS: one reason you got problems could be your domain hasn't propagated yet. But again, direct yor queries to the Support staff.

Kay --- Yes it has been registered on the Hostgator server for a couple of months-- It is a subdomain I am trying to upload to--- the domain has a couple of other subdomain up and running on the internet ( someone set them up for me-- But It is time I learn to do it my self)

Yes I see all the files in File manager --but they are in Public_ftp not in Public_html --My other two websites are in public_html

I will try to upload them through file manager!!! what is the difference between file manager and other desktop upload software ???

If you go into your cpanel file manager - does it show any files uploaded? If not, the problem is what you are entering in the ftp program. That info is simple - but must be exact or doesn't work.

Thank you Kay--- I appreciate your responce and help---- Debra

        FTP instructions for FileZilla

I don't use filezilla so can't get specific but the link above may help you as it is step by step to uploading with filezilla.

Did you set up a subdomain in the cpanel? If you haven't the file will go into a folder rather than a subdomain. You've probably done that but thought I'd mention it.

That empty subdomain folder would then show in file manager, public_html area. You could open that folder and then use the upload there to upload the files. It's not the fastest way so I'd go through the link above first to see if you can't ID what you're entering wrong on filezilla.

Let us know how it goes.

      Just a thought,
What did you name your home page.

It should be "index.html" or "index.php".
If you do not have that, then your site will not show up.

      Hope this helps.

        Connect using Filezilla using ftp.yourdomain.com
Enter your username and password and Port you can leave blank and it should automatically detect it.

Then upload your files to public_html
your sub-domains and sub-folders will be in that folder.

silly question, but do you have an index.html page?

    Hi Debra,
I'm also a user of HG and from time to time have to contact Live Chat for assistance, but I'm getting the hang of their system a bit better now. Are you aware that the first domain you upload becomes your main domain. Any others that you upload become addon domains. You need to click on Addon domains in the Control panel and enter in the info required, before you ftp your new site. Also you need to put your main domain name into the ftp info before you upload.
    Kindly
    Veronica

Check your htaccess codes......that may be your problem.

Go into file manager and open up your .htaccess file.....if your subdomain isn't showing there, it isn't going to display for you.....

make sure you check it and add the permissions from the root domain as well as the subdomain....

      hope that helps......
