Dedicated server comes with cpanel?

Is a dedicated server the same thing as my hostgator shared hosting, in the sense that it has cpanel, fantastico, ect?
Any recommendations for where you should get one, I know HG is known for their shared hosting and affiliate program but I haven't seen anyone with an HG dedicated server so far.

    You can get a dedicated server with or without cPanel and Fantastico. If you get it with, then it'd be effectively like having a reseller account with access to cPanel/WHM as you normally would, but you'd also have full root access to the server.

    Although when buying you would need to check what kind of management you get with it, if you aren't familiar with Linux then you'd be best off taking out a full management plan so you don't need to worry about security patches, OS updates and so on. If you don't go for management then you'd have to do it yourself, or you'd likely be charged to have someone do it for you.

    You'd also have to make sure you had backup solutions in place, be it an extra drive to store the backups, or some external backup space on another server. Backup space isn't normally included in most standard dedicated server plans, so you are best of checking that out before buying.

    I use a LiquidWeb VPS and it's rock solid. They have really talented and responsive phone support as well. I'm paying $40/mth and it comes with WHM, CPanel and Fantastico. Highly recommended.

      It depends on your existing hits, visits and mysql load. Each site is unique.

      How much monthly traffic are you getting? How many sites? What type of sites are they? WordPress, HTML, ECommerce, Forums?

          If it's under 10-20 sites...and each gets 100-200 uniques per day, you should be ok with an entry level 3hz, 768mb server with hyper-threading.

            What does that make hostgator's VPS and dedicated servers? They don't seem to have 3g hz processor. Their level 3 is 1.13ghz...

              The base HG dedicated server comes with an Intel Xeon 3040 CPU which is dual core, so you've effectively got 2 * 1.8 Ghz which would give you a total over 3 Ghz:

              Intel® Xeon® Processor 3040 (2M Cache, 1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)with SPEC Code(s)SL9TW, SL9VT, SLAC2

              The base VPS plan is also a fairly standard spec, a benefit of going VPS over Dedicated is that you can easily be allocated more resources (move up to the next plan) should you need it, which isn't quite so easy on a Dedicated server. So you could always just start off on a base plan and work your way up should you need it.

              What are you currently hosted on, just a standard shared plan and you've gone over the allowed resources?
