Best Service for Testing Solo Ads in Many Ezines?

I'm about to try my hand at Solo Ads, and see there are several services which offer "groups" of ezines you can purchase ads in. (Not talking about safelists or group lists). I thought that might be the best way to jump-start my testing instead of one ezine at a time...could anybody let me know of any services they've had good or bad experiences with?
Thanks,
Tom

    Hi Tom,

I am interested in your results. I purchased the Diectory of Ezines and have been happy with the content, but have not used it. I am finishing up my first product and want to test the solo ads with it to see how effective it is.

I will keep an eye on this thread.

    Good Luck!!!

I've been using the DOE almost everyday now for over 10 years. There is nothing better that I would recommend for finding ezine publishers. There are also numerous "ad co-ops" as well, but for the most part you are required to subscribe to each of the ezines for your ad to run. It may be effective for the IM niche.

Thanks, myob: Hmmm...might have to reconsider the price tag if it's that good.

Well, you can pay the $197 for unlimited use of the directory, or slog through the search engines. Have you checked out the JV Forum? There are usually some good advertising bargains there.

Also, try solo-ads.com You can send your ads for free by reading other subscribers' ads. Sometimes I use that to test some new ideas. There is a paid option for sending solo ads to 3,000 for $25, as well as other advertising offers listed.

Overall, however, I think ultimately you will find the Directory of Ezines to be a very good investment if you intend to do some large scale advertising.

Thanks for the response, John. I'm considering subscribing to the Directory of Ezines as well, but might wait a bit. I understand it's quite helpful, though.

I found some Ezines but they seemed to be all geared towards the 'Make money online' niche. I'm not in the niche. Does the Directory of Ezines have ample opportunities, and slightly more obscure niche areas?

Solo-ads.com seems like it might be filled with people who are only reading emails so they can earn credits, and not out of actual interest. Does anyone know if that is the case? If so, is Directory of Ezines full of more of the same?

Getting solo ads through respected IMers and people on Solo ads is probably your best bet, especially if you target this niche.

      @LegionNate

The DOE is a listing of hundreds of different niches and includes the ezine publishers, number of subscribers, demographics, ad rates, publisher contact info, etc. None of the niches I sell to are in the "make money" or "IM" market either. Some of the niches listed are quite obscure, but I always target the hottest and most heavily competitive niches only because that's were the big money's at.

I see some solo ads in the WF Classifieds. Is that a good place to work from? My guess is because feedback is given those offers would be pretty solid?

As mentioned in a previous post, you perhaps should also checkout the JV Forum. You may find your target niche as it does have some lists other than IM. Or you can even post your request there. (It's huge!)

I did a solo ad once and a ad swap once. The solo ad was a scam..and I should've known it. This is what I would have done differently knowing what I know now.

    1. Join their list...stay on it for about a week, maybe a week and a half and evaluate their mailings (the message, how often, etc)

    2. Ask for referrals. Not just emails, but those active on the net. Maybe they have a website...a WF profile, anything that "validates" them. Then contact them via email/PM asking their honest experience with the seller in questioning

    3. Get proof of list size/open rate. Sometimes this won't be needed but you can't be too careful. Especially ask for proof if referrals seem to be unreachable or just not as informative as you'd like.

    4. Pay via paypal or credit card (ASK FOR INVOICE, DONT JUST SEND MONEY). If anything goes wrong file a claim.

    5. Join their list to ensure that the day you set your mailing is the day it is sent.

    6. Get a guarantee. If there is no guarantee of clicks you may wanna reconsider. Also check the subscriber rate to open rate. If you they have 10K subscribers and only a 100 guarantee rate, you may not wanna be associated with this mailing. Super low open rates aren't something you wanna be a part of...but evaluate this for yourself and make the decision best for you and your biz.

Tom, if I understand you correctly you're not very experienced in this field ("I'm about to try my hand at Solo Ads").

That's why my suggestion is to focus first on testing YOUR ad copy. Forget about buying ads in groups of ezines. Buy very cheap solo ads in the SAME ezine, use different (more or less) ads and compare the results (compare the no. of clicks, not the no. of sales or signups!).

Reason: You know ... to find a potential unpleasant thing such as the ad copy is not yet very good you don't need to buy expensive ads. Why paying more money to find the same thing about your ad?

After you tested your ad copy and you're pretty sure that you have a good ad copy then you can go to the next level.

I am a Life member of Directory of Ezines and have purchased Solos from their list with great success, but I have also had a few bummers. I have also used JVs and AdSwaps (independently and through ad swap coordinators).

    1. You do need to be aware of the honesty of your provider or partner. Unfortunately, that is often difficult to determine, except by experience. So start small and protect your wallet.

    2. Your offer makes a whale of a difference. Every time my mail-out failed (sometimes miserably) was not the fault of the list owner. There were times when my offer was poorly tested, poorly structured, etc. In other words, it was my fault. So take the time to TEST...TEST... TEST your offer before doing a big roll out.

The Director of Ezines is a great resource, plus there are also providers here on the WF who offer great Solo Ad bargains.

I wish you the best with your product.
