Looking for recommendations for a client who has a need to start producing a lot of self-vid sessions for content production.

What's a nice video camera ranging from a few hundred to the 1k range.

Would love to hear from the video, content production gurus around here.

Muchos Danke,
Sean

Grab the Cannon HF S10 HD camera... one of the best on the market... its about 800$ to 1k.

or if you got a nice budget, get the Sony AX 2000 3.5k though

I researched this a lot, because I wanted to buy a camera for myself.

The best two that I've found were the Canon HV40, and the Panasonic HDC TM700.

They all got great picture and fancy features, like focus ring and external microphone slot.

I finally bought the HDC TM-700 because the HV40 works with tape, the TM700 works with a built-in SD card that makes it easier to manage your footage.

      Hope that helps.

      Cheers.

I wouldn't recommend the HV-30. It's a great cam but its taped based. The newer cams record to flash memory.

        Here's a few recommendations.

        1. Kodak ZI-8/ZI-10--around $150 Good cams for the money. Won't be as flexible as more expensive cameras but can get the job done.

        2. Canon HF 10--around $900--great cam--should do everything you need.

        3. Panasonic TM700--around $900-- great cam and should do everything you need.

        4. Panasonic HMC 40--around $1700-- really great cam---will do everything you need and probably more.

        Hope that helps,

        Kevin

Zi8 is THE way to go. Buy 3 of them with 2 mics and now you can do real interviews without retakes. Professional and cheap!

PS: Dexx, drop me an email please. I dont have enough points!

Low end, yes the zi8 but be warned it's been discontinued though they are still for sale if you can find one.

The upgraded camera is the Kodak Playtouch which costs 50% more, has a touchscreen, bigger lcd for playback, headphone socket (playback only)

A mid range camcorder like the HV30 is a good move, might be too fiddly for someone new to video but a DSLR like the Canon 60d would give amazing results, you'd want to add a separate audio recorder to monitor audio and sync it up later.

Thanks for all the input! Some great suggestions and considerations here, eg; being 'tape driven' and external mic issues.
