Best Shopping Cart For Online Store??

Hey fellow Warriors,

I have a very good friend here in Beijing where we both currently live or better to say already since 5 years. Any way, his Business is selling high quality food from europe, mainly from Italy. His business is going well.

Now I got an Idea and proposed to him to build an Online shop for him. He can reach a much more brighter crowd and the ordering process will be easier.

Now I need a very good shopping cart, what would you fellow Warriors recommend to use. Maybe some of you have already experience in this field. I read some good reviews about Go Daddy Quick Shopping Cart>

Thanks for the advice

Low Cost: Wordpress + Getshopped plugin. A+
    High End: Magento. A+

Been using the plugin from Getshopped for some time now in customer websites and it's solid. I advice you to check their forum to see whats up lately - the community is very active over there and they keep pushing the plugin to new stuff.

Are you selling digital goods or tangible ones? For the former I'd recommend Digital Delivery App and for the later something like Magneto or Shopify (both high end solutions)

I've been trying to figure out the same thing... need a shopping cart that is reasonably priced and will deliver digital goods. I also need to figure out how to set up an affiliate program.

For serious e-commerce, I highly recommend using magento which is free and open source. While the inital setup and skinning may be more complex than say a wordpress plugin, the amount of depth and scalability it will give you in the long run is well worth it.

Personally, I would stay away from any godaddy products. You don't want the fees or dependence.

For a simple e-commerce solution for selling a few digital products, I recommend the free wordpress plugin called "eshop". Ive had great success using it, it automates the process, downloads etc..

For a more affiliate oriented approach (for digital products), I would look into e-junkie.

I know that you're asking about a shopping cart, not a whole shopping platform, but I highly recommend using Shopify to implement the entire online presence of your friend's business - handling everything from payment to shipping, statistics etc. becomes extremely easy! There is a monthly fee, but they have a 30 day free trial and if your business goes well I bet you'll be more than ok with paying it. At least that was my experience

I have had experience with Magento as a "platform"....I can tell you that is unequivocally SUCKED as a shopping cart. Alot of people claim that it is powerful and all that, but what you have to ask yourself is if you need to have an IT person on staff to work with it. Changing the simplest files required finding several related files since the files are spread all over the place.

The backend was workable, but not really that friendly.

I have owned a 1M product plus online store and currently have a small store for my deal of the day website. I have looked at probably 50+ carts out there. Here are the "Best" carts as far as user friendliness, ease of upkeep and breadth of features.

If you don't mind hosted, then go with Volusion or Big Commerce. My current store is a Big Commerce store. They support all sorts of things including digital distribution and I believe multiple vendors if you are using several drop shippers. I chose Big Commerce because, if I wanted to eventually purchase the software (in case I wanted to make some major customizations), they have that as an option under their sister company, Interspire.

I don't think you will go wrong using either and I recommend it to all the people I consult with. Magento will just piss you off....I spent several hundred $$$ getting a custom skin and found dealing with some of the most simple things being just a PITA....and I knew enough code to get by. A newbiew would be stuck getting an IT pro to do just about everything for them....run away from it...run far away.

I like cubecart; there is also phpShop; another option would be JRox - which has an inbuilt affiliate system.

As previously mentioned, Shopify is good. So is Volusion. Both of these are hosted solutions.

If you want to run it on your own server, check out SunShop. Very easy to use and setup.

Thanks all for the great advices, and actually I need now two shopping carts. One which can be just integrated in an existing web page, and an other with which I can create a web page.

But I guess there are already some good ones, thanks you all.

        Hi Eduard,
everyone here has some experience and there are many great and also many bad e-shop solutions.

You should write down the features you request for your business and then choose the solution which have all these features.

I use Zencart. It is free and there is large community around it.
It has many free (and also paid) plugins and supports also digital products (AmandaT was asking about that), CC, PayPal payments,...

What I miss there is better filtering by attributes (sizes for clothes,...) and it also requires doing some technical stuff to adapt it to suite your needs.

I use JROX JAM for affiliate program, well it is not the best, but it is cheap and one time payment.

If you need something easier to setup consider JROX solution, quick cart, magento or joomla extension to name some... or renting some hosted solution - just order trial versions of what you consider is best and try what would suit your needs best. Free trial is great because it is set immediately and you can "tiuch" all the features of given solution and then compare. The main advantage of rented solution is that they will tailor it to your request and it is often for reasonable price.

I think you don't have to have perfect solution in the beginning. My first e-shop was terrible but people started to buy from me so it worked and that is the goal. After establishing basement I started to do continuous improvement...

        Hope this helps a bit.
        Best regards
        George

What the shopping cart needs to have is very simple.

          1. I just need to add it to my current web page.
          2. It must accept credit cards payments.
          3. This is a very important thing it musst work in CHINA, as i live there currently.

This are the major things I need to have.

          Thanks
