AWeber replacement - what's your best recommendation?

by hayrik
52 replies
I've been a happy customer with AWeber for many years but unfortunately we've noticed quite a few issues lately that is greatly effecting our customers and sales - so we're now looking to move on and use a different service

Right now, I'm tossing up between:
Getresponse
or
Imnica

Can anyone offer their recommendation here?

Who has the best deliverability & reliability of the two?

many thanks

Mailchimp is better and FREE for most users.

      Seriously?

Do your research before recommending something like this. Mailchimp is not suitable for people looking to promote almost anything via email.

Mailchimp is more than a bad idea, it is an idea that is dangerous to your business that you may get your account and list deleted without notice due to recommended a product.

I use Get Response. Mail Chimp may not be suitable if you are an affiliate marketer or engaged in any of the other activities that they deem prohibited in their terms Terms of Use | MailChimp

I use Get Response. One reason I like GetResponse is that they allow single-opt in lists. Yes, I know Aweber allows this also, but at some point they force you to make the list double-opt in. That was my experience and I've read others have had the same happen to them. I've had single opt-in lists with Get Response for 7 years (so far).

Why single opt-in? Studies show that many people never confirm the 2nd opt-in. You've gotten a visitor to give you their email address, and then you can't email them. Not good.

One negative about Get Response is their user interface. Aweber has a better look and feel. But once you get used to GR, it's fine. And they have been improving the user interface lately.

Deliverability has been good for me.

    Thanks for your responses.

Do you know what the deliverability rate is for Getresponse?

That's one thing i like about Aweber is their deliverability. They claim its at around 99% (whether its that high or not I don't know) but I know it's good.

Check out this other post on this forum. I would be interested in the details of your account being deleted with Aweber.
        Your Account Has Been Deleted
        From Aweber rep:

        "Hello Sean,

After investigating a number of complaints in
regards to your account and subscriber process, it
has been determined that you are using your AWeber
account in a way that is generating an unacceptable
        number of complaints.

Unfortunately at this point we are no longer able to
work with your account, as the complaint level is placing
        our deliverability in jeopardy.

This has become too much of a risk for both our sending
reputation and that of our customer base.

For these reasons, your account has been closed effective
immediately. We ask that you do not open a new account as we
can no longer service your business. I apologize for any
inconvenience and if you have any questions please feel
        free to contact us.

I was amazed that only after 7 spaced out related IM niche safe-swaps I conducted over a month's period of time all of a sudden they just send the above email with no formal warning. Not even an email saying something like

"your account has been receiving a high number of complaints, please do the following x,y,z thing to solution the problem or your account will be terminated"

Call up customer service, get this annoying rhymes with grunt on the phone that didn't get me very far. Tried contacting the original person who wrote me back who gave the same standard canned answer, even tried contacting the CEO of Aweber himself. No deal.

What's ridiculous is they erase everything, so all follow ups, ecourses, everything is just wiped out with no recourse. I realize now that it is in the TOS and there isn't really anything I could do about it. But I really think Aweber is way too sensitive about "spam" accusations.

If one opts-in, then they've opted-in, once twice, who cares? Not like I'm sending people Viagra offers when I'm in the IM niche for Safe-swaps give me a break. Isn't that what the unsubscribe link is for?

Furthermore, I think society has gotten way too over the top about "unsolicited email" i.e. spam. I mean I realize that it must be controlled in the traditional sense, but needs to ease up a bit when it comes to people putting in work to build a business in this context I thought it was just plain ridiculous.

Anyways, have moved onto GetResponse, lesson learned will save all content and backup leads to avoid such totalitarianarist nazi regimes like aweber.

Man that is brutal. They do not seem to care about their customers.
They should have sent you a warning maybe even a temporary account
suspension with exact instructions what to do to reinstate your account.
Then if the problem persisted then perhaps they would be justified in deleting your account..
But just to cut you off without warning completely on an issue that could have been dealt with shows a lack of care for their customers. They obviously know how much trouble it is to switch autoresponder companies and they just did not care. This is their culture I guess. Did you ask for your data? If not do so. They can back it up and send it to you. It is the least they can do.

I am not too sure about Aweber but I do know that they are charging a rather expensive monthly fees. lately I also heard some negative things about their service. I think they are a little bit stuck up due to their popularity among IMers.

Imnica in my opinion is good enough for anyone to build their list with. Their price is very affordable and their interface is user friendly.

I can see that quite a few of season IMer are using Imnica for their autoresponder service whic is a good sign.

There is an issue with our subscribers and customer's details just "disappearing" from their database. We're losing details for about 25% of our buyers every day - when they're supposed to automatically move from a prospect to a buyer's list 75% make it and the rest just drop off all lists and they no longer exist anywhere in the aweber database... needless to say its become a huge headache

Aweber is a very good service. Downsides are that they are a bit expensive and can be trigger happy in deleting IM type accounts. I have read about a number of cases where they just deleted established accounts because of script issues or even if the content of emails is not what "they believe in."
Rather than trying to work with the customer to correct a problem they just delete accounts sometimes.

Getresponse is very good. You could also self host Active Campaign and become an expert in email deliverability yourself. You can get in all the feedback loops with the help of your host. More work but you have total control.

I will suggest that you use services which let you use there smtp server.

Marketers like us don't want to be limited in our offers.

It is advisable to use email providers which has available smtp servers, ip domain, and whitelabeling. These is in favor for us to be safe from being blocklisted

Bear in mind with GetResponse that they usually require all your subscribers to opt in again when you import your list. apparently if you have a full time-stamped list with IP addresses, you can "appeal" to their opt-in manager to import the list without the need for re-opt-in, but I haven't tried it.

Good tip Karen. I'm guessing if you're transporting a list from aweber (who has similar rules) it would be seen as legit.

Have to say though, that's whats appealing to me about imnica, I'm just not sure of their deliverability...

Pretty much any autoresponder company will require you to do this and even then if they get a few complaints they will stop you. That is why it is a good idea to start devellopping a self hosted autoresponder as a back up and work on deliverability issues yourself. You have much more control.

actually, good autoresponder services don't require it. they require you to certify that you list is opt in and can tell if you're bs'ing them. two examples are icontact and office auto pilot/send pepper

I am hearing quite a bit about Aweber acting this way lately. Too bad a good service otherwise. Getresponse is a good alternative.
You might start with them because it is easy to set up and then work on your own hosted solution as a back up.

I use autoresponderplus which is quite efficient for some of my lists.

Better yet is Active Campaign. Much more expensive but has all the features of the major companies. They also offer a hosted solution. I run their software on my own server. I do not use their hosted service.
          The software is first rate.

You would need to put lots of work into email deliverability.
I wrote an article "28 email deliverability tips" which lays out how to get into feedback loops etc. You can look for it. It is on this forum.

Check out this other post on this forum. I would be interested in the details of your account being deleted with Aweber.

I've heard that Aweber are starting to investigate accounts that get a complaint level above 0.01% meaning that if more than 1 person in 1000 complains about your emails they will investigate your account.

Basically you're at the mercy of someone who can't even remember what they opted into your list for - and we all know how common that is.

Honest to god I don't understand how somebody can say that aweber...or any "mass market" autoresponder is expensive.

On aweber you get 25k subscribers and you pay $130/month...if that seems expensive or you can't make that money, then you are doing it WRONG.

If paying $30/month for 5.000 subscribers seems like a lot to you then you might want to reconsider this whole IM thing.

    Ontopic:
I've heard good things about Active Campaign lately, especially their split testing and action-based responses.

I'm gonna try that for now, see how it stands-up to the likes of iContact and Aweber.

When you start getting your list to around 100k it starts to add up. It also depends on your market. If your list is people who invest $1 million per year in the stock market and you have a stock picks program it is definitely worth the fee. If your market is freebie seekers it might not be worth the fee.

You have other options like getting even several dedicated servers for the same money.

Well that's one way to look at it. Imnica Mail gets you the same 5k subscribers at $9/month. I'm of the opinion that if I have something that gives me the same as the "big boys" but is less, then why would I want to pay more?

        Deliverability maybe?

I've had imnica for over a year, got locked in at 10,000 subscribers for around 10.00 per month.

I have not started a list, but the main problem in my testing of their deliverability so far is the amount of time it takes to get the email....

I have done several test emails that have taken as of today upwards to 50 minutes to get to my email account, which in no way should be acceptable.

I cannot believe that they have business if this is normal for them.

I am about to do a wso launch, and will need to have fast email times once a subscriber, signs up, and at this point I am about to cancel my account with them, because it seems like IM suicide to use them if they cannot deliver an email within a few minutes time.... 5 minutes would almost be too long, but I could deal with it, and my customers might be able to handle it, but for the most part, if someone signs up, and they are looking to opt-in on your list and have to wait an hour to do so, you pretty much might as well hang it up....

Anyone else have any suggestions comparable to aweber in quality but imnica in price?

I saw someone recently using eBizac.com as an autoresponder service, and just would like to know how stable and reliable and fast their deliverability happens to be. The guy who sends emails to me using this service has never once gone to my spam area on yahoo mail....

        Any other input?

ListWire is worth checking out. It is 100% free, but has all the professional features, even social media integration with Facebook and Twitter.

What is Listwire. Does it show campaigns. I have never heard of it. If it is free then do they market to your people or how can they offer it free?
Appreciate any feed back as I need to get an autoresponder also.

I'm reading this and I'm sorry to hear all this. I'm using aWeber and I don't have any problem with them. Yet ... I have Acc in ListWire but I don't use this AutoResponder. I don't know why, maybe is looking a little bid complicated to me

I have been on a few....

    Think the order was:

Aweber - Because everyone said to but as I didn't have any list to speak of it was a lot of money for nothing so swapped to...

MailChimp - Then found out they hated marketers so went to...

ProFollow - Pretty good and quite cheap but then they merged and I ended up back on...

Aweber! - Don't know why but just didn't like them at all this time round, might have been a past experience thing as I was locked into ProFollow prices... still $19 but for a lot more subs... but still not happy with them so went to....

Imnica Mail - Now these I like, good costing and no problems so far, very similar functions to Aweber for half the price...

    Hope that helps!

.... and once again the Warrior Forum comes out on top!

What I mean is, I've been an Aweber customer for 4 years and luckily, I haven't had any problems yet.

But - it was great to come and read this thread to see what challenges others are having.... kinda makes me a little more vigilant...

      Thanks, Warriors!

Check out eBusiness Automation Center as well. It's not a new service (5+ years old) and has just been upgraded.

Seems that nobody here is considering Amazon SES.
I've my own platform, however you can use other easy to your or free script or desktop software, just be sure that they send via SMTP with TLS security.

    Why Amazon SES?
    1) it's reliable and never fail
    2) it delivers at incredible rates
    3) you pay for what you send, not for the size of your list
    4) it's cheap $0.1 for 1,000 email. So to speak: my clients and I are sending out 1,5 million email per month and we have a list of around 500,000 subscribers.
    1,5 millions / 1,000 * $0.1 = $150 - that's what I've spent.
Try to keep a list of 500K people at Aweber or any other service... you'll need a bank loan to pay them.

    Downsides (yes, there are some).
    1) at first they allow you to send only 5,000 a day at very low speed
    2) they closely monitor your activity in terms of quality of the messages, bounces and complaints
    3) affiliate is ok, until you send out quality messages
    4) if you fail the above you are kicked out
    5) you may need a programmer or an experienced person to configure and fine tune your script

If you play ok you'll get a ton in terms of ROI. My clients almost doubled their open rates since I migrate to Amazon SES.

This brings to mind a question I have too. I am a photographer, I collect email addresses on every order form I pass out to my subjects. Email address for discounts and special offers.

I'm surprised at how many people give me their email address. Can I put this email address into a database and feed the database to Get Response or any of those services. Or, do they require the addresses to be collected electronically?

It's time I got off my duff and started targeting my true customers.

      What should I do?

      Thanks in advance.
