I think MailChimp has a free plan, though they don't allow affiliate marketing so keep that in mind.

GetResponse is free up to like 10 subscribers I think.

MailChimp also has a free plan, but as mentioned don't do affiliate marketing. I think you can sell your own products though.

Nobody actually "needs" a free autoresponder.

People only imagine that they do, and that there'll be some long-term benefit to starting that way, and that in some meaningful sense it'll be better than not having one at all.

Aweber charges $1 for the first month and $19 per month thereafter. If you're not covering $20 in two months, the reality is that you don't have a business at all, and that's not something that using a free autoresponder is somehow magically going to correct.

Sorry - am being honest and realistic, not critical, I hasten to add.

In my opinion, using a free autoresponder is one of the very most ill-advised and misguided things one can do, in internet marketing.

Few people are more keen on list-building than I am, but I think for most people it's better to start without an autoresponder, temporarily, than it is to use a free one. And (unlike the situation with regard to free hosting), with autoresponders it IS specifically the fact they're free that causes the potential disasters/risks, in my view.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether it can possibly be wise to entrust the safe-keeping and security of your business's greatest, most important and least replaceable asset (your list) to a company whose business model is that of being a free autoresponder. I think that it's generally right at the start of their internet marketing careers, when people understandably have the least judgement about such situations, and the least awareness of the facts and realities involved, that such mistakes tend to be made.

I suspect that people imagine something along the lines of "Well, I can always start with a free autoresponder until I've made some money, and then make the switch to a better one". Usually, one can't easily do that. Moving established lists from one autoresponder company to another is typically hugely difficult, and very commonly results in all one's subscribers needing - at best - to opt in all over again. Many Warriors have commented here that they've lost between two-thirds and three-quarters of their lists, this way!

Some people just shrug and say "Well, you can always back it up regularly, can't you?". Easily said. What are you going to do with it, after you've "backed it up"? How are you going to import it elsewhere? Who's going to allow you to import it elsewhere, and under what conditions? (People don't always think about these problems. But the experience of Warriors who have actually had to try to do this seems to me to point to its being something of a nightmare and a disaster).

In the case of Mailchimp, obviously enough, the situation's very clear to anyone willing to make the effort to read their Terms of Service. In the case of other "free autoresponders" (of which there are several), it's usually very much less clear, unfortunately. Typically, those recommending one, in my opinion, are only recent list-builders themselves and may not yet be aware of some of the longer-term pitfalls.

Some of these companies even attach to every email their customers send out to their lists a clickable link advertising their own free service! :p It's literally the autoresponder equivalent of having a little website advising people about <whatever> sitting at Yola, with a big clickable link at the bottom of the page advertising "Get your free website here with Yola".

      How professional does that look?!

Some of these companies also don't yet have a very well established business model. Who really knows if they're still going to be there 3 years later? But if they're not, that can be an absolute disaster to your business!

On previous occasions when I've made that point, someone with a financial interest in a "free autoresponder" business has replied, mentioning that I don't know that Aweber or GetResponse will still be there in 3 years' time, either. I honestly think this a pretty silly argument, because it should be clear to all of us that the odds are stacked in one's favour if one uses Aweber (for example) and against one if one uses a "free autoresponder".

If necessary, I'd make a sale or two without having a list, and then start with Aweber when one has $1 to spare.

The set-up costs even for internet marketing businesses which do everything professionally, right from the start, are absolutely minuscule ...

My perspective only - there are others who disagree, of course. One or two of them are owners of free autoresponder businesses.

And some others, I think, are pretty inexperienced and have maybe not yet encountered any problems - in contrast to others here whose warning-posts can readily be found with the search function, by those willing to look.

That's exactly what many Warriors have said, who've later lost their lists there, Stan. Just read the terms of service VERY carefully indeed!

If you do affiliate marketing (or any of the other things they don't like), even if you don't do it/them at Mailchimp and only give out free information there, you can still lose your account there, as explained here.

This thread, and this thread, and this thread will also perhaps be very highly relevant to you.

      Good luck!

Even if you find something that's free it won't be as effective as Aweber. I'm not even talking about their service - which is great.

If you find a piece of software that allows you to manage your mailing lists on your own you would still have to find mail servers to send all the email through that wouldn't get flagged as spam when it's sent.

I was planning to write few words about not using free auto responder, that aweber is only $1 for the first month, about the difficulty to move your list later etc...

Then I read Alexa's post. Right now, I don't see what I can add.

    I totally agree with that.

Having dabbled with free autoresponders, I can honestly say most are not worth your time. Some don't allow any importing or exporting of leads at all. Others severely limit how many you can import/export. Most limit how many automatic messages you can put into your series (usually around 20, which isn't really a lot). Some don't allow for sending out a broadcast to your list (necessary if you have a new product release for example). Others don't work correctly and your messages will be addressed to "Dear {firstname/friend}," instead of "Dear Jim," which at least looks like you were the intended recipient. Most also limit the number of subscribers to your list.

If none of this scares you off, they can serve the purpose of becoming familiar with how to use an autoresponder. But, you have to be fully aware that your "list" will probably not come with you if/when you migrate to a paid autoresponder. If "tinkering" is what you have in mind, go ahead, otherwise don't bother.

Does a better autoresponders like icontact or GetResponse (Not Aweber) allow us to import our existing

customers / buyers email to the list? We need to update out buyers with new updates.

They all vary, and some will allow this, but typically on very strict conditions (you'll definitely need to prove to them that you own the list and are the person to whom they opted in, and usually - not quite always - all you'll be able to send them in the first instance is a new confirmation request).

It's something you need to discuss (carefully) with one of their customer service representatives before making a decision.

I'm talking about importing a list and still having to send verification emails to add them to the new autoresponder. I've been on the receiving end of such an update from a marketer switching to a new autoresponder service. I'm just saying that something that can be a bulk action in a paid autoresponder becomes a tedious task in a free one.

As stated that they do not allow affiliate marketing.

Ok. I do not directly send subscriber with affiliate link. Instead, I can send them a free ebook. At

Stan, if they find that you do affiliate marketing at all, even if you don't use their service for anything connected with it, you may lose your account and all your lists (as explained in Tina Golden's post linked to above).

It's not about "whether you use their service for affiliate marketing".

It's about whether "you are an affiliate marleter".

Really, it's crystal clear from your questions that Mailchimp's service isn't suitable for you.

One thing i not very interested is the recurring monthly payment.
That is why I need some free service to build up my confidence.
See how many subscribers I can get for a particular time.

I am not selling info products. I sell physical products.
I want to see is this service really works for me.
If I got 50 subscribers and I can get paid from them, not too late to use paid wan.
I believe I can still move 70% of the existing subsribers to the new service.

I'm curious though, does he have tools that track open rates, when, who etc?

That's a good question. You can send html messages so I would imagine open rate tracking is an available feature.

Maybe Gary will see this and chime in.

Although they are helpful and can gauge response to some degree, open rates are never very accurate to begin with.

Here are a couple of reasons why:

          * Only html emails can track opens since a tracking pixel can be put in the message by the service, so anyone who has text only as their email reading preference won't be tracked
          as an open.

          * Im not 100% sure of this, but a very talented programmer friend of mine told me that if you don't click to enable the images in the email message (you've seen this if use gmail, the tracking pixel won't fire off and that open won't be tracked either). It makes sense since the tracking pixel that tracks opens is an image, if they are not enabled, then the image won't display, thus making it unable to track the open.

Anyways, open rates are a little overrated just because you can't get an accurate open count. I think the best thing to track is clicks to whatever link you have in your message that was your call to action.

          How's that for a long-winded answer

P.S. - Aweber's deliverability is decent, but certainly not the best.

However, as you can see, they've done a great job branding themselves since they are always used in our circle as the barometer.

We track open rates, and clickthrough rates, but it's not targeted down to the individual subscriber level...

The reason why is pretty simple, in our testing, we've found that over 95% of our paying clients (at another service) never used this feature... they only looked at the overall results of their mailings, and never used any of the deeper analytics available to construct sub-campaigns based on that data.

In short, the analytics are pretty, but very few marketers were using them... even the people you'd consider to be extremely advanced marketers.

Stan, you can start with Imnica Mail free and have up to 1,000 subscribers. Or, you can start with 5,000 and pay $9 a month. I use them and they are just as good as the bigger guys. And Richelo is a Warrior here, the owner and very fast and customer response.

I agree with everything that has been said about not having a free autoresponder but
my reason for using aweber is the proof of their use. Of all the emails I get from marketers the ones that get to my inbox use aweber and all others go to my spam folder. This isn't anything I set up but obviously my mail supplier knows the difference. I use msn for my mail service. Other services may not separate it as much as msn.

      What ads are those?

ListWire includes no advertising in your messages, we just use a small footer link on the bottom of your messages... just like many of the paid services do.

There aren't any ads in the members area, in your messages, or otherwise. All we do is send you, the account holder, an email a day...

I didn't know that MailChimp doesn't allow affiliate links. I was under impression that it also has same work flow as Awber but didn't understood why people don't use it much. Anyways, this is a great post which clarified me about MailChimp

I haven't read all the posts but I heard of one called ListWire... Looks pretty decent and it's 100% free.

Only problem you'll run into is it may not be compatible with most plugins...

In that case, I would go with Mailchimp

If your plugin supports any kind of form code, List Wire will work just fine... and yes, that's most plugins.

Getresponse have a 30 days trial. Within 30 days you should easily make enough cash to pay the next month of the autoresponder.

Although I have Get Response...Im looking at Listwire too... Im not buying the whole "they might go out of business" arguement. That's just a way to justify the money you are spending. Going out of business could happen to ANY business. Hostess just went bankrupt recently..who saw that coming besides their execs? They have been around forever!

We're not going anywhere... I've been in this space longer than 99.99% of the people on this forum, and was one of the original 100 members of the forum.

ListWire has been online over 2 years at this point... if it was going to fail, it would have done so a long time ago.

Rags, the interface is not as slick as aWeber's true, but Gary has been around FOREVER and won't be disappearing anytime soon. I've got Listwire as a backup just in case something truly catastrophic happens. It might take a bit to learn, but you can't argue with free, and when it is done by one of the most trustworthy guys in the biz, well....
