I'm currently using Dragon Naturally Speaking version 10 to create this response.
Just wondering is it preferred or standard?
    Thanks for the response Nathan.

    Also to all future posters:

Please also Mention the Headset that you are using with this software:

I read many glaring reviews about: (On Amazon)
Plantronics Foldable USB Stereo Headset (Optimized for Laptop Use) (Audio 470 USB)

Also mention your experience with this headset in case you are using one.

    Thanks

Like Nathan, I use version 10 (Preferred) and although I never used 9 or 8 I did use version 7.0 and like this one as much. The initial trainng time was minimal and it has few errors. I'm using it on both a desktop (Vista,3.2Gz,4Gb)and on a laptop (Vista64 AMD, 2GbRam) and neither one has a problem with it. Never tried it on my other laptop or desktop but I did use version 7 on them with no problem. Itis a quality product.
edited to add: not headset, I prefer a microphone and I am sitting while talking.

I can't speak to version 9 as I last used version 6 or 7 (can't remember which). I currently run version 10 Preferred and love it. I have it installed on one desktop and two laptops. I haven't had any problems at all. I use the headset that came with it and my only complaint is that it has a hard time fitting on my big head.

I really like Version 10 Preferred. I have never used any other version. I have increased my productivity by at least 2 to 3 times. I am not happy with my headset, and am looking for a good one.

      Hi
I have used the Pro Version of 9 and 10 not the Preferred and the Pro 10 has been a nice upgrade and is what we currently use. We use the Pro version because it supports scripting which really changes the tedium of code writing and provides for multiple user networking. Unlike the Preferred it also supports Outlook and PowerPoint which the Preferred does not. It also allows for mobile support which I use all the time with Bluetooth Headsets. Come back to the office and sync it to the PC. It runs great on the Pentium Core i7 Processor with 8 Gigs of Ram. I would definitely recommend the upgrade to Version 10 Preferred. Hope this Helps.

      Both.

I've used it on 32 bit XP and they just released a Vista 64 compatible version, which is what I upgraded my machine to.

(For those that don't know, a "64 bit" version of an operating system allows you to have more than 4GB (3GB functional) of RAM in your system. If you buy a new computer and it comes with more than 4G of RAM, you most likely have Vista 64.)

I've used version 9 (standard) and version 10 (preferred) - version 10 works a lot better for me.

The headset I use is the one that comes in the box. I don't have any other headsets to compare it to, but to be honest I think I could probably buy a better one and get better results.

v10 is a lot better on not making as many errors and if you can get the pro with the headset it is exceptionally accurate!

  • I used 8.5, 9, and 10.

9 worked well, 10 works significantly better.

    I'm using it on a 32 bit AMD - XP SP2.

I have 10 standard and it came with a headset. I have a lot of background noise with TV and 3 children playing but that doesn't stop it.

I have version 9 preferred version and a Logitech USB headset. Go with a USB based mic headset.

I like the Preferred version 9, haven't upgraded to 10 since 9 does all I need it to.

I'm currently using version 10 and I love it, very easy to use and very afforable also! The initial training to your speech patterns takes some time, but when the program adjusts to your voice you can write articles in a matter of minutes! I'm using it on a desktop and laptop and haven't had any problems with the program at all, it also comes with a great mic and headset, so I'd highly reccommend version 10!

I don't either, but this one is an excepttion. 10 is more accurate and faster than 9. Enough so that if you use it often, it'll be worth it.

I use v9 with a 5 dollar pair of headsets from...a discount shop..used to use mike but new baby made this not the best option. But after so many people saying 10 is more accurate..hmmmm, might be upgrading
either way, the product is excellent.

    Hi

I'm using version 9.5 to type this. I find this version absolutely fantastic.
I find that I'm doing very little in terms of corrections. Sometimes I type in entire article without any mistakes so no correction is necessary.

I certainly won't upgrade to version 10 simply because version 9.5 does everything I require it to do and is very well trained after using it for a number of months.

Just so you know this is being typed directly into the forum. There is no need to dictate to the Dragon pad or into word. You can use version 9.5 to dictate directly into most programmes although some of them might not be 100% compatible.

This message was typed with the English and not the American version of this language
also there has been absolutely no errors in the finished product.

Choose whichever version you feel worth it in terms of price. If you type a number of articles and/or e-mails or something else you will find your productivity dramatically increased.

this reply has been typed with no changes or corrections

    Michael.

I am getting forgetful in my old age.

I forgot to mention what type of headset I am using. It's a relatively cheap Logitech with a USB converter.

This is the first time I've done three posts in a row in the same thread

When I was shopping DNS 10 had so many bad comments on Amazon and other forums that I choose to purchase 'down' to DNS 9 standard. I hadn't used this type of software before but find it incredibly accurate as long as I 'train' it for new words. I use it on a laptop with AMD processor and inexpensive Logitech usb headphone. I travel with the computer and headphones a lot and the headphones that came with the product (worked well) broke after several months of schlepping around in the computer case.

I bought this as a headset and it's been wonderful. Good enough for Skyping and other PC-related functions that require a microphone. (The one that came with DNS 10 Preferred was too uncomfortable.)

It's a little pricey, but if you do a lot of content creation, you can save 2-3x the time and it pays for itself.

I'm not sure, but I have version 8.0 and it is unusable. You may want to check out Amazon.com to read some reviews to see if version 9 or 10 will accurately record speech.

If version 8.0 was unusable, I'd hate to know what versions 1 through 7 were like.

Hay - I remember version 5 or was it 6? Total piece of junk - I had bought it locally at some chain store and returned it and complained so much I was able to get my money back.

Now version 10 preferred looks good though.

  • The Headset makes a big difference. Nuance tests headsets and rates them. Choose one of the high rated headsets that fits your budget and tastes. I like the plantronics USB... I have no idea if the model I'm using is the most current or not. I also use an array mic but you have to be in a very quiet room to pull it off.

Using version 9 preferred. Got it on a big coupon deal for about $100 a couple years back. Would upgrade but can see no reason too because I'm having little trouble with the existing version.

I have however had the occasional database problems and their backup restore is not the best.

No reason not to go with the newest version if you are starting from scratch.

I also used the old IBM Viavoice years ago, and it wasn't very good.

I wonder if anyone has used Speech Recognition products for Macintosh and if they are up to par with Dragon?
