Hmmmm... Is bluehost that bad?

As Nigerian, I can't use hostgator due to rejection of my credit card. The card is issued by our bank but loaded in Nigerian currency. Last year, some banks partnered with Visa and Mastercard to come up with a reloadable debit card which is loaded with Nigerian currency but automatically converted to dollars during purchase online. Hmmm . . . a relief I thought. So many other Nigerians loved the idea.

But Hostgator rejects the card. I thought of an alternative and someone said he use bluehost with the card and it is accepted.

I didn't want to rush over to pay for my hosting and so, I looked for reviews for bluehost and what I have read so far it an eye sore-too many negative complains against bluehost.

My question is, is bluehost that bad?

I will also like someone to suggest an alternative hosting company which they have used without much problem.

Bluehost will shut you down very quickly without so much as a warning if they receive a spam complaint. I had it happen to me and really don't know why, but I moved on and have never had a problem since with Hostgator.

I haven't heard anything else negative about Bluehost though, and they didn't hold all of domains hostage.

How long ago was that? I had one of my email accounts hacked and it was sending out spam. My account got suspended, but after contacting Bluehost support, my account was renabled straight away after I went and disabled the problem email account.

Bluehost has unlimited add on domains and has been that way for a long time.

I still have a Bluehost account and the reason for that is mostly historical and gives me some hosting diversity.

On the whole Bluehost are quite good, but their uptime isn't as good as Hostgator. Quite often, they do unscheduled server upgrades or have to do a reboot due to one of the shared accounts chewing up resources.

I definitely prefer Hostgator over Bluehost, but I certainly wouldn't say Bluehost is bad.

I certainly seem to know several people who are "former Bluehost customers", which does rather make one wonder.

Opinions always vary. And by the time a hosting company reaches a certain size and is reasonably well established (and you wouldn't want one that isn't) there are always some complaints about it.

Have you looked at HostMonster and JustHost, and whether they might accept your credit-card? I haven't used either (I'm with Hostgator, which doesn't help you) but have heard good things about both.

Bluehost offers unlimited domains, too. They probably didn't when you were with them though.

To the OP, Bluehost is a very good host. I've used them for about 8-9 years without incident. Which countries they accept credit cards from may be set by their bank, rather than an internal policy. If they don't accept your card though, why do you ask if they're a good host?

I hosted with them a few years ago and had no problems until one day one of my websites instead of displaying, showed a page with a message which simply said "Account Suspended".

This then happened to all of my sites hosted with Bluehost. Imagine the effect on my business, when people clicked on my link or domain and saw that message. I have never had that experience with any other host and I have used and I still use several web hosts.

To cut a long story short, after many contacts with the help and tech support I was informed that one of my scripts was at fault and had let in the bad guys. They could not tell me which one was the so-called rogue script.

I uninstalled all of my scripts one by one and eventually my websites were re-instated. I now became concerned however, as this was the only webhost that had ever caused me to have this sort of downtime. So I decided to move my sites to one of my other hosts and I cancelled my payment subscription to Bluehost.

About a year later I was speaking to a person who is experienced in the webhosting field and I happened to mention my Bluehost issues. His reaction was that Bluehost were not the best at security updates and so the problems that I had, may not, after all, have been due to my actions. Whether this is fact or not, I don't know and never will.

I can only relate my experience with Bluehost and it is not a good one. I could never recommend them to others.

There are many providers out there and I use three at the moment that I am very happy with. You will have to make your own choice after reading all of the reviews.

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

Hi Dennis Gaskill, you didn't read my thread well. Here is the issue: Hostgator rejects my card and not bluehost. I spoke with a fellow Nigerian who said he use bluehost and that they accepted his card (the same kind that is rejected by hostgator). I had to do a search before I make up my mind and so, that is the purpose of this thread.

I came over to WF because what I read about bluehost is VERY discouraging. How would you feel about a company if 7 out of every 10 comments are negative. I didn't want to conclude on that because some people could be doing so just to ruin a company's reputation.

I came here and the opposite is the case: there are more positive comment than negative here.

Hmmm. . . Just thinking. Thanks guys for your time.

You're right, I misread your post. Sorry about that. Anyway, as I said before, I've used Bluehost for 8-9 years and haven't had any issues. Support is great. I certainly wouldn't have stayed with them that long (and still use them) if they were a bad web host.

Never had a problem there. Never had a problem at HostGator either.

But mostly, I'm ecstatically happy over at cPanel Shared, Reseller, and VPS Web Hosting by Bolt Web Hosting which is owned and operated by fellow Warrior Chris Little.

Not an affiliate link and I don't make a dime for saying it, but he's awesome and so is his hosting.

Still never had a problem at BlueHost though. Don't know what people are on about.

I use bluehost for my small websites or you can as test websites.

As far as I know they only offer shared hosting and they will shut your account if you reach their shared hosting limits i.e 7% of the cpu usage.

In this situation you cant host website which receives big amount of traffic. I have talked to their support and they say that when your account receives around 2500 page views a day then there might be issues like shutting down of account.

So, I would suggest you, not to go with bluehost if you range around 2000 page views a day, because you get your account shut any time.

Remember they only offer shared hosting, so no room for upgrading later.

    I hope this helps

I've used bluehost for quite some time and I've never had a problem. I also use Hostgator and Arvixe and from my experience they are all first rate with good support and great options. I think like anything else, if you look long enough and talk to enough people you're going to find something negative.

If you really want hostgator you can always pay in advance to eliminate billing problems. You'll also save a lot of money in the long run. I have 4 hostgator accounts, I pay anually for 3 of them and the 4th is a business class account that I paid 36 months in advance. Just my couple of pennies about how to get hostgator if credit cards are an issue for you.

    Jideofor,

The reason you are reading a lot of negative reviews is people usually don't
go online to write a positive review.

People go online to write a negative review as a way of venting frustration.

So, there will usually be a lot more negative reviews than positive reviews.

Interesting, that there's not a mention of CPU throttling that BlueHost is now using. I have been with them for 6 years, no problem, until of late my sites are throttled for long period during 24 hours. I am not running any scripts that devour CPU.

Just don't go with JustHost. I've had a really hard time with them. The support is pretty responsive, but our sites were hacked and we've had a terrible time getting them to unsuspend. We've done everything they suggested, and they said they didn't get our emails. It's been a nightmare. I'm moving to HostGator.

I've always been with hostgator from the start.

Never really try blue host, but one thing I'm sure of, is that the blue host live chat support is not as good as the hostgator live chat support. I've done several chat with the live chat support before I made my decision. Hostgator support is just the most suitable one for me. They know much more techie stuffs compared to support from other hosting companies.

you can try asking for someone to pay your hostgator bill for you, but you just have to send your money over first to someone you really trust.

I have been with a hosting company called successful hosting.com over 10 years, and have been completely satisfied. I have their reseller plan, so I get unlimited domains, unlimited MySQL Databases, Unlimited email accounts, unlimited PostgreSQL Databases, unlimited sub domains, 20 C Panel Accounts on my plan. I have checked out all the hosting companies suggested in the Warrior forum over the years, and the one that I have considered a few times was host gator, but successful hosting is the one I stay with, because for me it is super easy to use. You can pay your domain hosting with paypal. My reseller hosting plan is 23.95 a month.

Blue Host is a solid, reliable hosting option.

Personally, I use Blue Host on my first site, and Hostgator on my second site. Really no difference in my opinion. Both have been excellent, solid customer service and by site is never down.

GoDaddy hosting however.. SUCKS. My site was literally down 5-10% of the time, it was horrendous. I tried it out just to simplify my payment process (same domain provider, same hosting), but quickly switched after a few months.

I have been with BlueHost since I started in Internet Marketing back in 2004. They have been very good to me and even when a few of my sites got hacked they were extremely professional in helping me resolve the issue. They have true 24/7 support (like Hostgator). Their up time is good (like Hostgator).

I reccomend BlueHost and HostGator to my subscribers all the time.

Why/How does one get spam complaints that would cause bluehost to shut you down?
By the way I've heard hostgator will shut people's sites down completely for no good reason and I've also known them to get overloaded on a wso and cause problems for the seller as the site keeps going down due to too much bandwidth being used. I can understand it going down once but after that wouldn't they just FIX it so it doesn't keep going down? I'm going to try bluehost!
