I would always recommend Hostgator.. for anything complex (i.e. a PHP script) Godaddy is a pain, as their server software is outdated and configured strangely. Most scripts will not support their product on Godaddy hosting.

I set my first site up with Godaddy and I am still regreting it now. Once I started on hostgator my sites are about 10x faster and the interface actually makes sense and is alot easier to use.

Using Godaddy to do anything is such a pain in the ass.

I have had hosting with both and agree with previous comments Godaddy was very troublesome and Hostgator my current co, is very straight forward.

I often use Godday for domain name purchases especially when you can usually get a discount voucher somewhere else for domain name purchases.

Hostgator... hands-down. I've used GoDaddy, iPower and Hostgator for hosting services. Performance, Support, and cost-wise, Hostgator has been the best for me.

I do use GoDaddy for domain name registration, however. I've not tried Namecheap yet for that, but it is nice to have all of your domains consolidated into a single management area. But yeah... GoDaddy hosting is terrible (or at least was when I tried them).

Hostgator is good for low impact sites. If you create anything requiring a little more cpu time then your site scripts will be disabled without notification. That being said, I will still use them for general hosting because of their superior support (live chat support) and they've always been very helpful. Uptime is unbeaten in my opinion.

Anything requiring more server resource I place on dedicated with serverloft.

Godaddy had too many bad reviews for me to even contemplate using so I've never bought anything from them.

Domain names mostly by namecheap (whoisguard protection, ssl, etc.).

Bluehost, worth a look based on reviews seen so far.

Hostnine - bad support and will make changes to server config that impacts your sites and not care about it. But their shared hosting gives you the choice of server location for each domain you want to host, unlike others where you get a server and that's where all sites within that account will be published from. So if you can put up with the crap service and bad attitudes, then having the choice of server location can be a big positive.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying in this thread. Namecheap for domain registrations and Hostgator for hosting. (preferably the business or reseller hosting plan as in my experience your sites will load a bit faster than the baby croc plan - although that may not be true for everybody.)

That said, if you have multiple websites it's a good idea if you can spread your registrations around amongst different registrars.

Hostgator uses Cpanel ; whereas Godaddy has a custom panel setup - a nightmare for a lot of installs. Godaddy is ok for bulk domain name checking and registering ; nothing like registering a 100 domains in about 15 minutes...

Hostgator for hosting. Their support is superb. With many hosting companies, support is only available during normal working hours. HG is available 24/7 and that too as a chat option so you do not have to waste time chasing a phone system. During my 5+ years using HG, I have never seen the 'live chat' disabled at any time of day or night.

Also, it is very easy to get started with hostgator. You can start for just 1 cent (yes, that's not a typo just 1 cent = 0.01 dollars) for the whole of the first month if you use the coupon HOSTGATORINTRO when you sign up. You can have all your domains hosted under this single account. Given that the barrier is so low to try hostgator, you should definitely go with them.

I'm not sure if it's true but rumor has it Host Gator has been overloading their servers. When I was in this situation last month I fell between Hostgator and GreenGeeks. I chose GreenGeeks Reseller they are 300% Green have the newest servers (They have been wonderful) I have not been a HostGator Customer. I would not use GoDaddy for hosting again, ever. The other reason I chose GreenGeeks over HostGator is the unlimited space feature for reseller, I'd rather not be limited.

I have some domains at name cheap and some at GoDaddy. Right now for my main domain I use Godaddy, because of the support and the custom DNS features. NameCheap does not have the best customer service. But their control panel is easy. Eventually, I will have half of my domains at name cheap and half at Godaddy. Why have all your eggs in one basket?

Yes. But that is not their specialty and it shows in their domain registration tool. I would stick with godaddy/namecheap as you can get better pricing with either of these. Also, not sure if hostgator provides extras like private registration etc., that normal registrars do.

Also, many people (myself included) prefer to keep the domain and hosting with different providers.

It is not a good idea to host with your domain registrator.

If you ran into an issue with your host. You can move your domain to another host.

If you host is also your registrator, they can make very difficult to move your domain to another host.

I use both. I like them both. Both allow you to host multiple domains (delux hosting with go daddy, baby croc or higher with hostgator). Both have auto install of many add on apps like wordpress, though hostgator also has php list and a couple of other mailing list apps if you don't have an autoresponder service like aweber already.

Go daddy delux plan is a little cheaper (about $7 a month, much less if you pay for a year at a time), versus hostgator which is about $10 per month.

Both have great support.
Both allow use of custome htaccess and php.ini files, which is important if you use them.

Godaddy limits your email addresses (though it does allow catchall address so this isn't really an issue), BUT godaddy also limits your daily smtp email sending limit to 250 messages per day (unless you buy more). Hostgator does not limit your smtp out (except to the extent that is you do mass mailing, you must throttle your sending to roughly 1 message every 8 seconds (about 450 per hour) for shared servers, so as not to bog down the server bandwidth. For most people this is not an issue.

I like hostgator better for 2 main reasons: 1 is that I use a lot of MySQL databases. Hostgator allows unlimited databases, whereas Godaddy has a 25 DB limit for the delux hosting.

2. and most important, in my opinion, is that Hostgator offers the CPanel interface with the baby croc plan (or higher), and CPanel is a very nice feature if you use it (though the godaddy account management interfaces are also very feature rich and allow you most of the same options, if not all). I prefer using CPanel to manage my server, and so on that point alone, I would recommend hostgator over Godaddy. But if you are unfamiliar with CPanel, you may find Godaddy interface easier to use.

But like I said, both offer great support.

Personally, I have about 60 websites and use Hostgator for most of the ones that require active development, but I still use Godaddy to host about 23 sites and also I register all of my Domain names through them. Not that Hostgator isn't a good registrar, I just haven't ever used them to register a domain, so I don't know about the differences in price or services as far as domain registration is concerned.

I never used godaddy for hsoting but I can tell you they are so annoying with all their limited time coupons that I receive in my email you really should just go with hostgator (who I do use and NEVER had a problem that was not solved within an hour, they have AMAZING customer service).

Hostgator has everything you'll need. Godaddy is lacking in a lot of features and can be a bit of a pain to work with (although they're OK).

I would avoid 1&1 or yahoo.

For domains, sure - it keeps it simple to use Godaddy, but keep up with the renewals and use a coupon. That's where they make up their originally cheap prices - by charging a bit more for the renewals. It really adds up when you have hundreds of domains and you want privacy features. (note: I use Godaddy for the majority of my domains and one or two sites as a host company)

There are some really great hosting companies out there besides Hostgator, but I would NOT choose Godaddy over hostgator.

But, OK: Hostgator + Namecheap here.
I use Hostgator and Namecheap from 2005. I had 5-6 other hosts in meantime (VPS and shared) and nothing is like Hostgator. I'm extremely happy with them. Namecheap is first class, also, but used only them and name.com, so I can't say for others.

I have used Godaddy for my first 5 domains. I have now switched to Namecheap as they will hide your privacy for the public free the first year (5 dollars). Normal .com domains are same price almost. Remember to find month coupons before registrering

Hostmonster and Hostgator are sister companies, they are bothe owned by a parent company. I've used them both and they are both equally good at providing a hosting service. The only difference I can see is that with Hostgator, you can Pay-as-you go monthly but with Hostmonster you have to pay a renewable one off anual fee. So it depends on your needs in that way.
Tip - Always keep your domains on a different host than the domain name provider.
