How does Hostgator actually work?

Recently I bought 6 months worth of hosting with Hostgator and was told that you can do additional domains ( any number) as add ons to the one registered. I cannot figure this out as the two I have tried to add had to be registered as separate domains. Their help section is no help as they said you cannot add on to a domain with registering the name.

Talk about confusing. I find the whole business with them totally off putting. The host I have been with for many years gives me no problem but I cannot do add ons to domains.

Has anyone got the answers about this as many have told me that the add ons are free?

I think you're confusing registering and hosting as being the same thing. Sometimes a company will serve both functions, but they are two separate items.

So yes, you register your domains wherever suits you - I've appreciated dynadot.com lately - no mess of ads and upsells to wade through.

Then login to your cpanel on hostgator where you have your main domain hosted ( yourdomain.com/cpanel) and find the icon that's called "addon domains" and fill out the form there to create the space that your second domain will use.

See if that doesn't help get you through it - or feel free to PM me if I can be clearer

To the OP, I am new to Hostgator, in actual fact purchased the baby plan last week. The addon domains are a breeze to set up. I then used fantastico to load up the Wordpress installs.

Would Highly recommend their customer service as well.

I am having a hard time with hostgator domains as well. They say to point your nameservers to hostgator. What I think computer people don't realize is that this is like speaking a different language to non computer people. If one of you guys could explain it in simple terms I would really appreciate it.You won't hurt my feelings if you explain it like I am a 5 year old Thanks

      Norma -

You may be confusing with subdomains in trying to figure out add-ons. A subdomain, as I'm sure you know, is connected with the domain of the site. When using add-ons you are adding a totally new domain/site that will stand alone when accessed online.

So you can have one HG account that is in one domain name for that account - and you use the "addon" feature to add additional registered domains/sites. The new domain is "parked" on top of your original domain, if that makes any sense!

The alternative (that I prefer) is to have an HG reseller account. A bit costlier but in hosting multiple domains on a reseller account you have a management screen and each domain has it's own account and cpanel.

If you haven't seen it, HG has a good explanation at READ THIS BEFORE SETTING UP AN ADDON DOMAIN! &laquo Addon Domains &laquo HostGator Knowledgebase
