Turnkey Internet Review : A Bad One

TURNKEY INTERNET GOT 80 SITES DEINDEXED AND I LOST A HIGH PR NETWORK!

Please link to it with the anchor text "Turnkey Internet Review".

I just wanted to take a minute and gripe. I have, over the last month, been through an endless nerve racking fiasco and this morning things just took a left turn into crazy-town. Since I doubt Turnkey Internet has any intention of resolving the problem. Sending out my warning and relieving some frustration is the only option that i have.

Turnkey Internet Review

Quick Backstory. I host all of my blogs on their SEO hosting platform. Nothing too fancy, but some local based sites for doctors chiropractors etc... plus some other blogs that I use for links or a place to publish content on various things.

I have a fairly high PR network of around 60 blogs that i have put a ton of time and resources into. I try to be careful with them, but i take a sort cut or two. So when I started noticing blogs being deindexed a few weeks ago.. I figured I crossed some lines and that Google was just doing it's job.

Then a few became a few more and i started thinking something was going on. I read everything I could find on Google penalties and started freaking out a little that my network was found and that I was going to lose all of my work. A couple of clients sites were even caught up in the mix... a real headache nightmare scenario.

Generally speaking, I don't install webmaster tools on the sites because I want to avoid them being associated with one another. As a final last ditch effort to stop the bleed, I set up one of the lost sites in webmaster tools expecting to get an email telling me I'd committed one infraction or another against the webmaster guidelines.

To my surprise there was no email waiting for me. After poking around for a minute I did a "fetch as googlebot" which returned that the site was unreachable. UNREACHABLE!!! I spent the next 10 hours looking through all the forums and articles I could find on the subject. I was also exchanging emails with Turnkey Internet that provides me SEO hosting service. (I found them because they posted a WSO here).

Turnkey Internet Review

After running diagnostics and trying everything on my end, it started becoming clear that this was an issue at the hosting level.

Then I got this response this morning...

TURNKEY: "The issue is on Jan 17th, Google did something that effected our network. We are 110% not blocking any googlebot IP's, the DNS servers have NOT changed since such a change would have had to occurred simultaneously on dozens of servers, including dedicted client servers. We are at a lose as to why it resolves just fine for everyone else in the entire world BUT google."

THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM FOR A MONTH AND BLAME GOOGLE!!!!!!!!

Being irate that they would intentionally allow my network and all of my sites to fall off the map, I wrote them a fairly heated email... Here is an except.

ME: "You have known about this problem for a month and have not fixed it? I have lost a dozen high pr sites and several revenue earning sites because of this. It never occurred to you to fix this problem? IT IS NOT GOOGLE'S FAULT IT IS YOURS! They may have changed something that effected the way that they can see your servers... but the issue is still with the way your servers are set up. This should have been your only concern for the last month. That you did anything, including sleep until this was fixed is insane to me. You have cost me thousands of dollars and maybe as much as a hundred hours of time... my network is rather small by comparison... so i cannot imagine what you have done to other of your clients. "

They then replied...

TURNKEY: "Please watch your language. The issue has been escalating. The fix is to use your registrars DNS services till the problem is resolved. The issue is with GOOGLE not us."

I then said this... I am angry:

ME: "It is your problem. i am sorry, but you need to do whatever it takes to make Google able to see my sites. That you would sit back and even think about this as a Google problem is a fundamental betrayal of your professional and ethical responsibility to your clients. If Google said you need to host your sites on servers that are all painted pink in order to be indexed... you had better be painting servers pink. It is not up to you to decide how Google should work. You have cost me thousand and thousands of dollars and you dare to pretend that there is nothing that you can do about it. Your caviler attitude is beyond offensive and betrays an incompetence that is morally despicable. I don't even know the words that can effectively communicate to you how completely you have failed at your job and your professional responsibilities. You should be focused on nothing else, as you have, by your apathy, stolen from your clients and effectively destroyed the results of their hard labor. "

Turnkey Internet Review

They basically destroyed my network and blew up thousands of dollars per month in revenue streams. the worst part is that they knew about the problem and just sat back and considered it to be an issue with Google. Don't ever do business with them. If you have hosting with them... take it somewhere else. i have never heard of such an incompetent and reckless hosting company. I am very mad...

Anyone else have this problem with them?

Turnkey started of as a business consulting company and to be candid they should stick to consulting because they lack the expertise to run a proficient hosting company. I used them and I have to say there servers were pathetically slow. Even their tech support is poor.

Seriously, which hosting company in the world blames Google when their servers cannot be accessed by G. Any business worth its salt should stay away from this useless company.

I experienced the same problem too. Googlebot can't fetch ALL of the site hosted on my VPS. I will move to a new host next week I guess, since ALL of our clients are hosted in this VPS.

I had a 40 ip seo account and I am in the middle of transferring the whole thing. It has consumed more than two days of my time. This whole thing has been insane. I just wish I had known they were having issues before things got this bad. A couple of days or even a week out of the index is easy to recover from... Some of my sites have been out for a month. It's ridiculous. You would think having your servers indexed would be the lowest possible bar for "seo hosting" but apparently not.

First and foremost I want to apologize for this terrible inconvenience, or any disruption this issue may have caused. I also want to mention that I completely understand your frustration.

I would like to start off by responding to the first statement of:

THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM FOR A MONTH AND BLAME GOOGLE!!!!!!!!”

We were made aware of approximately 10 individual clients (we host 100k's of thousands of web site domains, with clients in over 30 countries across the globe) of similar issues where Google was informing them of trouble accessing their web site suddenly in late January.

“You have known about this problem for a month and have not fixed it?”

We in no way INTENTIONALLY allowed your network and all of your sites to fall off of the map. In fact, our team researched, and worked on this (and still is), and we found only 1 immediate work around which is this:

“You can solve the problem by using your registrar's DNS services. For more details on how to manage your DNS at your registrar, visit this page for video tutorials:

    http://www.turnkeyinternet.net/tutorials/dns/index.php

All sites resolve fine in any browser and the issue is apparently with the way Googlebot is trying to resolve the domains. We are continuing to investigate the issue but Google does not provide any easy support venues. We have posted on Google Groups and have seen that others have or have had this issue in the past. In those cases it either:

    - resolved itself
    - was a DNS issue specific to a single server/site
    - was fixed BY Google after someone from their staff saw the posting

We are 110% sure that we are not blocking any of Googlebot IP's from reaching our servers.

This is affecting not only our shared servers for Turnkey and HostPC, but some dedicated clients as well.

The DNS server configurations were NOT changed. Such a change would have had to occur simultaneously on hundreds of servers, including many dedicated client servers.

Now, why a specific domain suddenly stopped being accessed by Google, that used to be accessed by Google - was absolutely not a result of any network routing, firewall or other block. Of the 10 clients that reported the issue to us - some were on shared hosting, some were on SEO hosting, some were on our sister company (HostPC), and others on their VPS’s or dedicated servers. It was not isolated to 1 specific DNS server, or service for these individuals.

The solution/fix in every case, if the client was willing to make the DNS change, resolved it. We have many domains still using private name servers, or the shared hosting name servers for their domains with Google working.

We have dedicated a team of technicians that are continuously looking into this, while working directly with Google until it is resolved, and we will be keeping the customers that were involved, informed along the way.

I again want to sincerely apologize for any difficulty this may have caused.

If anyone has any further questions, they are more than welcome to contact us directly at Turnkey Internet.

I 100% agree with everything posted here. I had hosting with them and they are horrible. Uptime is worthless,my blogs are ALL getting de-indexed because of these guys. Incredible. Transferring EVERYTHING now!

RUN.....don't walk away from this provider.

80% of the time that I try to go to the websites, they are down. We can't access the ftp unless they authorize that given ip address. Now their customer service is not responding, and it has been 1 week. Run away folks. I have NEVER seen any problems remotely close to this with a solid company like HostGator.

I have been working with Turnkey Internet for several months. They had a great WSO to get 60 class c-ips.

      BUT then the problems started.

I use wordpress and am trying to back up my installs using WP-DBManager. Is a plug in that has been downloaded over 600,000 times and I am sure is used on hundreds of hosts.

So it won't work with turnkey? Why? The last email I received ...

      -------------
We choose to secure our environment that benefits our customers/community as a whole.

The way our servers are now secured we cannot simply do php.ini exceptions anymore, the functionality is no longer there.

That said, I've offered you two perfectly viable backup solutions for your Wordpress blog that we are willing to do for you.
      ------------

Of course the only title they use to identify themselves is "Operations Manager "

Their solution? use cpanel to do full cpanel backup or a SQL dump of the database. Seriously?

      RUN!!!

Hello Sgtaw, I am very sorry to hear about any frustration you may have with the security settings on our shared hosting enviroment - I am pleased to see how "great' the service has been for several months for you, and I do hope you will try to work with our team as they provided you 2 alternative to assist you in the same functionality of the plugin you wanted to you.

The settings you are attempting to use, and requesting to have an override (by default we disable system_exec, and similar insecure php functions, just like all hosting companies do on 'shared' environments) are not required to do standard items with any word press blog. System Exec and similar functions, open up an entire server to many security issues, because it allows remote intruders then to abuse poorly maintained wordpress themes or modules to actually hijack your account (and cause other issues on the server).

Now, you can also migrate to a VIRTUAL server (VPS) or dedicated server - in such an environment the server is 'yours' and 'yours alone', so you don't have to share with anyone. Since there is no one to share with, the default security stance isn't as tight, and you can control it.

But when dozens or more people share the same web daemon (SEO hosting is a form of Shared Hosting on cPanel), it requires security be controlled to protect everyone.

Now, your specific php function overrides are really not needed to utilize the concept of backing up your database, from wordpress nightly - there are much better and easier ways to do it as well. But we can't enable a secruity variable like system_exec (why that module needs that I dont know, but that was one of the functions you asked for and were trying to configure in your php.ini).

I wish you the best, and our team has continued to offer you great alternative solutions to your needs, and we do hope you find an option that works best for you.

        Thank you!

If you were really "sorry" you would do something about it instead of give excuses.

PLEASE. Do not put words in my mouth. I did NOT say your service was "great" it is adequate, quickly moving to terrible.

In those months, I was doing very much. Now that I am trying to ramp up, all these issues are popping up.

What the use when your team's answer is usually "NO"

Yes. Yes. and the sky is falling and other names like Hostgator is falling apart because they do not understand security like you do.

Much better and easier for who? You as the service provider or me as the end user? Kinda backwards when I (the customer) am having to conform to how you (the service provider) thinks is "better and easier".

You will find all the major hosting companies, will block the same php_exec functions, so that is nothing new - as I'm sure you have seen yourself.

We have given you several great options and solutions to achieve the same result, without any cost - but at the end of the day, if they don't fit your needs the alternative to shared hosting such as a VPS or Dedicated server will let you have greater control over settings like that. We even offer free migration to a VPS solution that will fit your needs (and often the VPS is less cost, than the SEO package(s)), so depending on your needs that certainly can be a great option.

I do wish you the best, while our SEO shared hosting system platform may not meet your specific module needs, we have offered you several options that will (from 0 cost, to similar cost with more flexibility). I suggest you call in at 518-618-0999 and speak with either Dave Conboy (the customer service manager) or the sales team, and i'm sure we can get you a solution you are comfortable with.

Hi Donald, please don't confuse the 30 day money back guaranteed from the cancellation procedure, - the reason our cancellation procedure requires you to login to our customer care center and verify your identity to click the cancel service button, is so we can avoid someone maliciously deleting an account (say on a former boss, or competitor) by trying to pose as such on the phone or sending a spoofed email. This is policy at most hosting companies, and has been ours for 10+ years.

Our procedure is outlined in the terms of service, and we issue refunds promptly within 1 business day when requested under our 30 day money back guarantee.

If you did not receive your refund within 1 business day please let us know, and I'll be sure to get it resolved for you promptly.

      Have a great day!

Turnkey provided me the WORST performance in hosting experience I have ever had and I have been in this game for a decade. They are polite and answer questions etc.. but they are a huge fail at reliable shared hosting.

I JUST moved every single site I own from their 50 IP seo hosting package.

The only reason these guys still have clients on shared hosting is because most people do NOT monitor their sites. If you think Turnkey is doing well go ahead and monitor your site with a free tool like pingdom dot com, you will be SHOCKED.

Here is my report from Pingdom for about 4 moths. From Dec, 2011 to April 2012
        - 293 down times
        - A total down time of 1 Day 2 Hours and 18 seconds
        -
The average downtime length is 5m 19s
        - The longest downtime was 2h 36m

BUT WAY WORSE THAN DOWNTIME (if it can get worse)
is the horrible access times. It makes visitor think your sites are down but you are never alerted to it so you just lose money and sales.

I had to complain constantly to get things fixed that other hosts simply catch and fix on the fly. It should NOT be my responsibility after half a day of brutal access times to alert them and have them respond with "a user was doing blah blah blah.... we have fixed it."

Also you all know how tech support and escalation works right?
        I did this dance bi-weekly.
First I send an email saying "site is down".
They respond "nope, site is up"
I respond "ok sorry, let me be precise site takes 30 seconds to access!"
wait.... wait.... wait... "oh some user was doing blah blah we fixed it.
This was constant. Why do they NOT catch this stuff BEFORE it frustrates the hec out of users.

It was often so bad I would just try to publish a post and it would take 2 minutes to update!

They need to be proactive but are NOT!

As above, they were aware that Google was having issues seeing some sites. They should have contacted clients giving clients the CHOICE to move their sites so they would not all be de-indexed.

Their shared hosting is a nightmare, they of course recommend to get a dedicated box or VPS.

Here is the thing folks at Turnkey if your listening, I have ZERO issues with my shared hosting at hostgator etc.. so why would I give you more money when you failed so miserably with the initial service of shared hosting.

Well I am also having problems with Turnkey and their support has been the worst I have ever experienced in 10 years.

As well as the same problem faced by others with regards to Google deindexing a huge number of my sites ( Yeah lets blame Google for that !! ) , I have also had a problem that is still occurring 7 days after I informed them about it. The server I was put on has some serious issues with it - and I have experienced nothing but problems for the past week. Websites don't load, emails don't work, WHM and Cpanel cannot be accessed. I've spent the last few days trying to make backups of everything from the cpanel ( in the rare event that is does load up ).

The support I've received is laughable. As well as waiting nearly half a day for a reply to my tickets - the actual help they provide is a joke. Every message I get has told me that they expect the problem to be resolved in 24 hours !! Well its been 24 hours multiplied by 7 so far, and I've just been informed that this issue will take another 2 days to sort out. So that will be 9 days of being on a server that simply is not working !!!

Email support is so 1990s !! Haven't you guys heard of live support ?? When things got so bad a few days back - I had to get online to chat to a sales person to complain about the service and problems I was facing !!

I have never experienced such poor support or poor hosting in the 10 years I've been working in web design and hosting. I really thought Turnkey was a professional company providing a professional service - that image cannot be further away from the truth.

I got suckered in by one of their special WSO offers here. But at the end of the day, my time and business is worth a lot more than what I am getting in return.

If you care about your websites and your online business - STAY AWAY AND AVOID TURNKEY LIKE THE PLAUGUE !!!

I'm not one who will usually post a negative review about something - but this issue with Turnkey the past week has really pushed my patience !! They are nothing more than a joke !!

Hello Alexd, I appreciate the frank comments and feedback, and while it does pain me to hear we may have fallen short of expectations, it is very helpful so that we can improve on areas to ensure our goals of providing the absolute best quality network, online service and customer experience.

While I can not verify your account/support-tickets (feel free to PM me if you like, and ill get in touch with you through our customer portal, and ensure you get both a refund, and some options to consider for the future too) - I am confident your comments come in light of issues that have been resolved, but were ongoing for webserver29 this last week. While we have 1000's of servers in our datacenter, and many more hosting servers dedicated to the SEO specific package, one of them has been having significant performance problems this last week.

I'm not going to throw excuses out there - at the end of the day its entirely on us to make sure your experience is 100% solid, from end to end and that's on us. What I can tell you is that over the last week every resource was brought to bare, to finally resolve the situation including working with cPanel, CloudLinux (makers of the kernel that sits ontop of cPanel that regulates the hosting engine), as well as throughly diagnosed the hardware and had Dell remotely verify things with us. At the end of the day, the issue was solved - but it doesn't take away that over the last week cpu spikes caused you trouble, and slow page load times, and for that I can only say we regret the trouble it caused you.

If you will PM me, I'd like to get in touch with you to confirm you are one who was impacted by webserver29 (which has been resolved), and I will follow up with you with a refund, as well as send you some options we are trying to reach out with to compensate and assist you. Obviously, we didn't get the job done here for you - and we can only take responsability here, and move forward.

Again thank you for the frank comments - our goal here on the front lines is to make clients happy and resolve issues - so if there is still anything I can help with just shoot me a PM here.

    - Adam
