What VPS do you guys recommend?

I have using one of the larger companies VPS for hosting my sites for quite a while now. However lately I have been having problems with speed. I have contacted the company to see if they can find a way to resolve this for me, however I am now also looking for other options.

Do you guys have anything that you recommend? It will be strictly used for hosting wordpress sites.

Go with a dedicated box. VPS kind of sucks and is only marginally better than shared hosting.

I like Myhosting and have been using them for awhile now. They're well priced and the customer service goes out of their way to solve problems that most providers won't do on unmanaged servers. You can also easily change your resources depending on how much power you need for each given campaign.

How about giving some details on the specs of the VPS and more details on the site? Moving to a "dedicated" server could just be a waste of time for you if the sites themselves are the problem....

      Based on what?

Why blindly make recommendations without asking questions? For all we know, the OP has twice the amount of resources...

Twice the amount of resources as what? Are you suggesting that a VPS will have twice the amount of resources as a dedicated box?

The BUS and the disk I/O is always the bottle neck with a shared host and a VPS host. This is true for both of them. A server is more than just the amount of RAM you have and the amount of disk space. All the RAM in the world isnt going to speed things up if your process is waiting in que because your limited by the disk I/O and someone elses VPS or shared hosting (both have multiple users on the same box) is hogging up cycles.

You said "Go with a dedicated box".....based on what?

My statement was saying no one knows anything about the specs on what the OP has - for all we know the VPS could be sitting on a desktop grade proc with sata drives or sitting on a 2650 with sas drives.

          -----------

And "all the dedicated resources" aren't going to fix a hog of a site either if the problem is with the site.

This is the dirty little secret of the cloud/vps vendors. I've worked with AWS, Racksapce, Linode, SoftLayer, and many VPS vendors.

The core issue is that disk IO is rarely scalable with how these systems are designed. There are workarounds but you cannot simply "turn-up" disk IO with these services. While you can easily buy more compute or memory, you typically can only get more disk space -- not always faster disk space. AWS and some other vendors have options to give you faster disks -- but you still hit this limit.

With shared, VPS and cloud services, I often find disk IO is the limiting performance factor.

To address this you have a few options:

          • Move to a VPS/cloud/dedicated provider with inherently faster disk IO systems.
          • On some cloud vendors, ordering more storage from different SANs can boot performance.
          • Optimize your application to cache more data in RAM or cache via CDN type services.
These are pretty much your options. However, before you make a leap, I would take a look at system metrics to see where the bottleneck actually resides.

And for all we know ... anything .. we can play the guessing game forever. But in general a dedicated box is going to be much better than a VPS for very little extra cost.

It sounds like you just want to argue. Sorry man. Im not going to play into it. You win.
