SeCockpit Gets The Job Done The Way All Keyword Tools Should

by JoshN

So I just downloaded SeCockpit and after using this product I am sold on the fact that if future keyword tools aren't in the cloud they are missing the bus completely.

The speed and ability to test thousands if not tens or hundreds of thousands of keywords in a day make it really invaluable if you're looking to create many sites. Programs that rely on your own personal computer, your individual internet connection and your individual google account are going to be acceptably quick but if you're doing heavy research you will run into captcha and google eventually freezing your ability to search for the rest of the day. If you use proxies it might keep you from getting shut off, but proxies are another step in the process and will slow things down considerably (think Market Samurai). Thus the cloud really really does make sense in this instance.

I think this program is head and shoulders above the rest in this regard.

Its honestly moved the entire bottleneck in my business from keyword research to now creative. I can't think up ideas fast enough to keep up with the keyword research I'm able to do now. My brain has become the bottle neck in the system! Good problem to have right?

There are some features that I feel are wierdly missing though. I get the distinct impression from using the tool and watching the videos that the guys who created it are data nerds. When it comes to investing my money I am a data nerd as well. But, while I feel they do a great job of allowing you to analyze and make sense of large data sets rather quickly.. they also over generalize too.

Currently I'm using Long tail pro, and its a much simpler program but it tells you simple things like if the top ten results actually use the keyword your searching for, or if its in the description. Something that SECockpit really doesn't do.

The problem this might create is that there are keywords that you search for that will bring up pages with high authority on very authoritative domains... but those sites aren't truly focused on your keyword. Thus in SeCockpit it will look like there is strong competition (because it figures competition on Moz rank and juice links ect) but in reality those sites would be easily beaten if you created a site to focus specifically on that keyword.

Dependence on SeoMoz ranking
Its kinda my next little gripe. Both LTP and SeCockpit use SEOMoz data but SECockpit only shows you the Moz page rank, not the real PR. Not to mention SECockpit doesn't seem to consider EDU or GOV links "Juice Links"

Just in the last 24 hours I've noticed several results listed in SECockpit that said they had zero juice links only to go to Long Tail Pro an see they had thousands of EDU links (remember both programs are getting their data from the same provider.... so wheres the disconnect here??)

Thin feature set, especially for the price.
Wheres the features? The IM world has gone backwards in terms of features and abilities since Market Samurai. Market samurai I found out through The Challenge is really much more than keyword research. Being able to control everything through 1 pane of glass as they say in the tech industry is something companies are spending millions, possibly billions on each year.
SeCockpit ONLY does keyword research and it looks like they are going to upcharge to get any more features. At least give us a Rank checker that will plot out our sites ranking over time.. please at least that.

But there are so many other areas they could expand on.

So when I first started using it I figured I'd cancel my subscription to LTP but now I'm not so sure. I find myself looking at massive data sets in SECockpit narrowing them down quickly and then punching the keyword into LTP because I believe it gives a much more accurate view of the competition on the first page of google. I also still need to track where my websites are ranking so its useful for that as well.

Overall though I'm very happy with the product. What the product does is very narrow and they are already the premium priced product for keyword research but they do it damn well. Finally I feel like it should be much easier for them to expand their cloud offering to include anything under the sun to match their competitors, than it would be for their non cloud competitors to move to the cloud.

In the long run this should give them greater flexibility to adjust their offering to mirror the trends that come and go in the IM world.

Thanks for reading,
Josh

    Thanks for your suggestions, Josh!

Rank Tracker: we've had a beta for a while and we'll be releasing it for everyone very soon.

EDU/GOV Links: Can you PM me an example keyword? From how I know the backlinks market, most .edu and .gov links are forum spam and will therefore be pretty much worthless. The whole idea that .gov/.edu links are magically good links is one I can't agree with, due to lack of evidence for it.
But I'll gladly reconsider if proven wrong.

Exact Keyword Use: SECockpit shows this in the detailed keyword analysis view. You'll see a list of all page titles in the current top 10. We also take this into account, in our competition difficulty calculation.

Additional features and data for the detailed analysis view are in the works.

This Update sounds very Exciting. Also good to know the keyword use is taken into consideration. Now if you could just make another column in the detailed keyword analysis with a check mark for the individual pages that use the keyword correctly in their description/keyword than I think it would really help as well.
Although we now know its being used in the competition strength, its good to see which pages are optimized around that keyword and which are not. Right now all we can tell is moz rank links and social media.

Any chance that you will be adding in PR to the detailed keyword analysis.. I could have sworn I saw it in the demo, and now can't find it.

I will look back and try to find the example of EDU and .GOV links.

Okay, I'll add those suggestions to our feature suggestion list.

I don't know if we can make the PR thing happen. It's tricky, getting PR data on the scale that we need it. But we'll see what we can do.

After Rank Tracker and one other new module, we'll be working on expanding the info shown in the detailed analysis view. Our goal is to throw lots of data at you, for those who want it, while still retaining the simple overview we already have, as well as the good ol' orange bar, which just takes all of that data and crunches it down to a simple, single value.

          HI Shane
As you know we love SECockpit and promote it a lot

We sometimes open up other KW tools to cross reference things. Recently we opened SECockpit alongside LongTail Pro and Keyword Blaze, and were struck by very large discrepancies between the links numbers. We had all 3 tools set to Exact Local searches, and used "how to get rid of cellulite" as our KW example:

The sites listed in the Top 10 results were the same across all 3, and all pretty much in the same order. But the links for each entry were vastly different. For the example, in position #1 (dailymail.co.uk,) SECockpit showed 512 "Juice" links out of 525 Total links, while Keyword Blaze showed 298 "External" links (they're version of Juice links) out of 305 Total links. Both tools claim to pull their results from SEOMoz. Long Tail Pro claims it now pulls it results fro SEOMoz too, replacing Yahoo Directory links, yet they showed 83. And SEOQuake, which gets it link results from SEMRush, showed just 13 links. When we doubled checked this number directly on SEMRush's site, sure enough, they were only finding 13 links to that site for that KW.

This discrepancy matters a lot, because all other indicators being good, a KW with just 13 links is pretty outrankable, whereas, 512 Juice links would be a clear signal to leave it and move on.

We're hoping you might be able to shed some light on just how SECockpit calculates Juice links, and why there's such a discrepancy here, so we know which inlink numbers to trust as the true indicator. Thanks

    Longtail Pro

    Ultimate Niche Finder

and the rest of the online offerings as well. What REALLY sets this service apart to warrant a $800/year fee?

I am still on the trial and I may cancel, but I don't think I will.

Before this I had been using LTP for a while and while I think its a PERFECT tool for guys building authority sites or just looking for additional keywords to use for their current site.

I really needed a way to cram through keywords. I would say yesterday I analyzed somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-100k keywords.

Figure one root key word with 3 variations equals approx 2-3k results after cutting that down that becomes 10-15 results if I'm lucky. I did this at least 20-30 times yesterday and I could have done it more but I was having a problem coming up with stuff.

I figure the more keywords I can research the more money I'll make on each site. I am starting to believe that keyword research is by and far the most important part of building sites. Pick the right keyword and you dont have to do as much to get it ranked. The more on page seo and off page seo you do to get a site ranked the more google will take notice.
On the flip side, the more you end up on the first page just because you're one of the only games in town... the better chance you'll rank naturally and google will leave you alone... All IMO anyway

Open to hearing more opinions, I'm new to this but that's my thought process.

Haven't tried this but Jason Fladlien promoted it on a webinar and according to him, it's the best keyword SEO research tool ever, maybe even better than Market Samurai. For one thing, it knows the importance of paying attention to strength of competition, than just looking at the amount of competition.

I've been using the trial version. I like it a lot. Tempted to get it but it's very expensive. Many people have said that it's very accurate and I'm going to see if that's true by ranking some sites that SE Cockpit says is easy to rank!

I should clarify my statement above in regards to this because you should not only be looking at the price of the product, but more so what you can do with it to earn multiples more. This more or less goes to your business model, not a simple price tag.

SECockpit's principle advantage is extracting mass keyword and competitive data significantly faster than it's competition. The reality is, you can get the same (some would say better) information from Market Samurai (and others), but it would take longer.

That's why I stated above that you need a LOT of sites and/or need to be doing a LOT of keyword research to justify spending $1,000 year on this product. In fact, if it was your job to do keyword research all day long, SECockpit would be an outstanding bargain.

Just starting out or you have just a few websites? No this is not for you then, as your marketing budget can be more wisely spent elsewhere.

I'm currently using MS. What I like about SECockpit is MASS keywords extracting.

Though our approach to internet marketing has undergone profound change over the last 12 months or so, we still spend a lot of time looking at market information, competitive data, and the like. More often than not, the 'pivot point' is still keyword and linking data.

We were fortunate enough to get involved with SECockpit very close to the beginning, a time when our keyword research efforts accounted for an even large chunk of our in-house efforts. Even in it's earliest iterations, we recognized the benefits it offered us - real, tangible, 'bottom-line' benefits like significant reductions in time spent, and what we felt was the first application to take the 'right' approach as far as competitive assessment & analysis went.

Since then, it's only gotten better. It's one of the *very* few products we whole-heartedly recommend AND promote.

I should add, it also provided an 'introduction' to Shane & Co., a relationship that we now count among our best. Not only has Shane been incredibly responsive to our needs, but has even built in to the product hooks to our "Adsense $100k Blueprint" course, enabling those following the course to implement it entirely from within SECockpit.

If you're serious about your IM business, then you're always looking for how to do what you do better. If your business uses this type of info, you really owe it to yourself to consider the tools that give you the best information, save you the most time, and provide invaluable data not easily available otherwise.

It is a great tool to be sure, although recently many results I got from SeCockpit were drastically inaccurate compared to identical searches I had saved within the software only weeks before. Not sure if Panda/Google had something to do with that but I seemed to be getting much more reliable data from Market Samurai when I ran the same searches to try and confirm the issue.

When the software was working good for me, the amount of results and the speed in which it delivered them was unquestionably staggering compared to everything out there in the marketplace right now.

The MAJOR draw back to SeCockpit is an overpriced monthly recurring payment. If you have just a few websites, there is absolutely no need to be paying $1,000 a year for a keyword tool if you are not using it every day as part of your regular business. You really need 50+ web properties that require consistent research to justify the cost imho, OR you are doing this as your full time job (and/or selling) keyword research services.

For most IMers, what I might suggest is to just sign up for one month and then cancel via paypal before the next month's payment. Then simply plan several days of massive keyword research for all of your properties and export the data to be saved on your HD. During the rest of the year you can use another tool like Market Samurai to keep tabs and trends on certain keywords that you have already researched and are currently targeting.

This way you can always sign back in for another month, 6, 8 or 12 months down the road, if you find it necessary.

My big gripe with the software, which, mostly I love, is that it doesn't tell you whether .org exact match domains are free. It reports on .net and .com, but without .org it feels like I am losing 1/3 of the picture all the time, and possibly missing out on some top keywords. Could you comment on that, SECockpit Maestro?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6588253].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Jon Paella
Yes, I think it should be cheaper.

Thaddeus, agree with you on that one. I'm not sure why they don't put .org - most people go for .org before .net.

Also, the info not just for the domains but also for the searches don't seem to be up to date. I'm assuming it's drawing from PAST data. Maybe a few days or weeks or months (horrrors!) ago since it can do things so fast and since it's dependent on SEOMOZ data - a lot of the accuracy depends on the SEOMOZ data too. So a lot of searches I do on the SERPS do not show the same website as it does on SE Cockpit.

But overall I think it's an awesome tool. Too bad because of the price not more people will be using it. The competition information is not the most accurate but no tool is 100% accurate. It's not bad as it is. The speed is probably what sets it apart from every other tool.

Speed aside, does anyone know any other tool whose competition analysis is better and more accurate than SE Cockpit?

What's weird is the manual says it should display the .orgs - maybe it's a bug?

I think SECockpit is pretty awesome, and rarely use any other keyword tool after getting it. But I like many here believe the price is a bit steep, and the argument that it does so much doesn't really justify the price. This is based mainly on the fact that SECockpit doesn't need a full team on a payroll, like some other high priced subscriptions.

But as long as SECockpit is the best keyword tool, they can dictate the price.

Anyway if you want to check out a review or get the trial/discount click here
