Windows 8 - what do you guys think?

What do you guys think about Microsoft's new effort? Windows 8? Anyone here tried it?

In my opinion, Windows 7 is a great OS. More importantly a great DESKTOP operating system, more than sufficient for our needs (in my opinion). Therefore you'd assume Microsoft would be just doing a few odd tweaking to Windows 7 if they want to improve it...

Except Windows 8 isn't a merely a tweak - it's a totally new beast.

I can understand Microsoft wanting to enter the tablet market, and yeah Windows 8 looks like it's gonna be a great OS for tablets, better than iOS and Android. But then to apply that same model to PCs? The Start button/menu is gone. This is a Windows staple, can't believe they got rid of it.

In general, PC users don't want to use a touch screen, if they did, they'd get a tablet.

For me, keyboard and mouse will always rule the desktop space. I know you can switch from Metro Tiles mode back to classic mode in Windows 8, but I still don't get the need for it in the first place. It's just an additional unnecessary bloating. And guess what, they've even included Metro Tiles touchsceen user interface mode in the new Windows Server 2012.

Many industry experts have poured scorn over Microsoft's new endeavour - including the legendary John Carmack. But MS aint budging, and it looks like people will have to accept Windows 8. Or will they? You never know, this could be a boycott by the PC market and wait till Windows 9, just like what happened with people not leaving XP for Vista, skipping Vista until Win 7 came out. We'll see...

What do you guys think?

For the reasons you point out, and more, I will never use Win8. Currently using 7, and it suits me just fine. When it simply can't perform anymore, I will go to Ubuntu, unless there's something even better by that time.

I think windows 8 is aimed more at the home/casual users and with what I have seen and played around with it will provide a great experience but not for everyone. Also on the mobile/tables devices. But with apple and in some way google on there doorstep converting users to their systems the process of pushing out new OS versions and related products has been speeding up for sure. For the business world windows 7 and windows server 2012 will be a combo that I think provides a stable and professional platform for some time to come.

I haven't tried windows 8 yet, and to be honest, after a few reviews that I have read I will stick to my actual windows version for along time from now, at least until they will be able to come up with something really good. And you already showed some of the reasons for which I will never try it.

This Reddit post actually does a great job explaining Microsoft's mindset:

What are Gabe Newell and Notch's complaints over Windows 8? : Games

Also, this should probably be in OT.

I think it will be released as a very raw product. Also I don't like that "Metro" style and I don't like when the operating system is sзying on me and sends to m$ the info on every application I install.

Right now I'm using both Windows (XP and 7) and Ubuntu Linux, and I'm going to move to Ubuntu completely within next few months. Goodbye Windows, it was nice to meet you.

So far, I am very much satisfied with Win 7, however I would like to test Win 8 in the future as well.

The thing is, change is the only constant. Personally, I want to keep abreast with the fast changing technology.

Personally I don't like to test commercial software for free. If they want me to be their beta-tester, they have to pay me for that. If not, why should I spend my time finding their bugs?

While I think W8 might be OK for tablets, I think it is flat out awful on the desktop!

I think W7 is a pretty good desktop OS though... and I'll keep using it as long as I can. If MS does not come out with anything better than W8 by the time W7 starts to become obsolete, then I will probably switch to Mac or Linux.

It's downright silly for MS to think that everyone will want to convert from the desktop to a tablet over the coming years. While tablets have their purposes, desktops are still essential (or at least FAR superior) for things like programming, web design, graphic design, audio/video editing, and other tasks that millions of people do every day.

My prediction is that W8 will be a bust much the same as Vista was, and that MS will come up with something a lot better the next time around. We will see...

    I love Windows 7

I have no reason to "upgrade" to 8 - and for the same reasons that you posted.

I am curious about their new 2012 servers tho, now that you mention it.

I've been running it for a few months. I use it every day for business. I am now fully assimilated and like it. The problem is it is such a drastic change that they are going to have adoption challenges. If cool hardware comes out at the same time that exploits it and is price-competitive with the iPad and Nexus 7, then I think that will ease the adoption challenge.

I actually like how easy and fast it is to swap in and out of tiles mode and the traditional desktop. There are some apps like Tweetro that will give you contextual notifications on the desktop.

Its a solid OS but it is going to be rejected by corporate/enterprise users if for no other reason than the massive training burden it will create.

I have a tablet running win 7 and decided to upgrade this week. It looks like it will rock I'm not a fan of android so never planned to have a tablet running it. Windows allows me to run full business applications. And despite so much of the new cloud integration, I expect to be just as much, or more productive with win 8.

I can see how Windows 8 is great for tablets. For now though I am still hanging onto Windows 7 which I hope will be useful for some time.

Yeah, I really hope Windows 8 will be a great success for tablets, and even smartphones.

I'm just not convinced on the desktop side.

I have been using Win 8 for quite a while (since the developer preview, in fact) and I have to say I'm very impressed. T those who prefer a more conventional look than the Metro interface, all you have to do is tap the Windows key.

Normally newly launch OS can make us feel like tempted to check it out.but most of the time the first buyers or users willl be one who become the lab test white rat. Just waste of time. For me I will stick to Window 7. Love it.

Currently using Windows 7. I've seen Windows 8 on the Internet but haven't tried installing one yet. I may play around it this week. A must-try, perhaps.

I never try when things first come out. I skipped Vista on the recommendation of a friend who was a Vista help desk guy but used XP at home because he hated Vista himself. Win 7 is great for me and I have no reason to change until it doesn't work anymore. Working as a writer it has all I need and more.

I don't like the idea of touch screens either. Being blind in 1 eye I prefer controlling what I see and making it as easy as possible.
