Good and Cheap are normally not something you find together. That being said I personally love HostGator

Only thing worse than HostGator VPS offerings is GoDaddy web hosting So explain... how is host gator "a really good one." What benchmarks do you have? How long have you been a HostGator VPS customer?

Also don't say you're a reseller/shared hosting customer since those computers are on completely different NODES and have nothing to do with VPS.

Dude, you're beating a dead horse. Most people on this forum that preach HostGator 9 times out of 10 have never used another company. It's been pushed down year after year by the affiliates that HostGator is the number one in the industry. One thing in common with every host promoted here - they ALL pay $50+ affiliate commissions, so you do the math here. So many posts with affiliate links with ridiculous reviews/comments get reported it's insane.

Even though every other web hosting company is a direct competitor to my company, I'd put a WiredTree, StableHost, MDD Hosting or KnownHost or our own virtual and/or dedicated servers up against HG any day. HostGator specializes in shared hosting, overloaded shared hosting at that. Most people who end up upgrading within them is because they've been told they're using too many resources since the shared servers are run so close to capacity.

If you notice, 90% of the hosts being promoted here are affiliate driven hosts, users who have review sites littered with affiliate links in their signatures etc etc. Somewhere down the line, the OP or person asking has visited one of these sites and someone will get paid a ridiculous commission. There's only a handful of users on this entire forum that mention "non-EIG" affiliate web hosting companies. Why? Couldn't tell ya. Monkey-see, monkey-do I guess.

          Amen..

As far as good VPS hosts go, try one of these:
          - EuroVPS
          - Futurehosting
          - Knownhost
          - LiquidWeb
          - MediaTemple
          - Evolucix
          - BuyVM
          - NinjaHawk

And that's off the top of my head. There's a lot of really good VPS hosts out there.
Don't settle for some overpriced "me too" junk from a shared host (Hostgator, etc)

I doubt about HostGator overprice VPS.

    CPU: 1.13Ghz / RAM: 768MB / SPACE: 20GB / BW: 500GB for $49.95/Month ?

Do you want managed or unmanaged VPS!

Head over here: VPS Hosting Offers - Web Hosting Talk

I can't recommend more except I'm using only WiredTree & LiquidWeb. They're not cheap but worth over the price.

Mostly, Good not cheap & cheap not good. It's rare to see the cheap one with good quality.

The cheaper ones you see are usually not managed services, so unless you want to manage the vps server yourself you'll need to spend $35-$50/mo.

HostGator? Wow no offense but if you don't know.. don't answer and steer people towards awful solutions.

I'd also guess that none of you have HostGator VPS servers or use them in any real capacity if you do.

As someone else mentioned... Web Hosting Talk (WHT) has a VPS Offers section (VPS Hosting Offers - Web Hosting Talk) which is a good place to start. Also be sure to search the forum for Reviews (VPS Hosting - Web Hosting Talk) of different VPS providers. You'll learn quickly that some have a better reputation than others.

Next head over to Low End Box: Low End Box - Cheap VPS Hosting Providers Listing & Reviews
Here you'll see budget VPS offers from hosts around the world. Each offer also has a comments section, so again research and read up about who is who and which is better.

Low End Talk is a site dedicated to Budget VPS discussions: LowEndTalk
You can learn a lot here as well (take everything with a grain of salt though, as tempers rise here and biases exists... everywhere).

Lastly you want to check some non-biased reviews of VPS offers. How can you do this? With benchmark results:

ServerBear is pretty respected for benchmark results
    SSD-VPS Benchmarks: http://serverbear.com/benchmarks/ssd-vps
    VPS Benchmarks: VPS UnixBench Scores

Also there is a hobbyist site where someone keeps benchmarks of VPS: Cheap VPS Benchmarks - 100% Benchmarks, 100% of the time

When I first looked into VPS offerings I used this benchmark site (VPS Seer): http://vpseer.com/ssd-plans
VPS Seer on budget VPS plans: http://vpseer.com/budget-plans

Using the above resources you should not only be able to get a good handle on who is best for you, but also get the best deal/price. Can you get a decent/reliable VPS for $5/mo? Certainly. Thanks to KVS and OpenVZ VPS as well as hardware advancements, VPS is becoming cheaper and more sensible for hosting providers to run.

Also yes you'll pay more for managed verses unmanaged. But if you plan on running any high end control panel (cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, etc) then they are all "self managed" anyway (hence why most VPS providers only provide managed services if you are running one of their selected panels). Now this doesn't mean that letting DirectAdmin/cPanel handle all your server-wide security updates is the smart way to go. If you are unfamiliar with command-line 'root' access on a server... then you should get a cheap unmanaged VPS and buy managed hosting separately. A forum on WHT has these services offered here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=201
    More information here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=82

Any other questions please ask. I've been a UNIX Admin for 20+ years and work closely with a couple ISPs.

Also as a last sidenote: I run quite a few VPS servers... NONE of which are at HostGator... Yes I've been a customer of HostGator's in the past but anyone who knows anything about VPS's or Dedicated would know HostGator is NOT the best choice
(they have their use in the industry, as shared/reseller low-end hosting... but *NOT* for VPS).

    Thanks,
    Brian

Hostgator is good if your traffic is not too big.

They kicked me off when my traffic increased too much they disabled my account and just turned off all my websites for a week without any warning and say I should purchase their dedicated or move to another hosting. So the "unlimited" term for Hostgator VPSes means they can say you "get lost" anytime for any reason from the sharing or vps hosting if they see your websites eating too much resources.

I have now one dedicated server on OVH it cost me about 100$/mo 16GB RAM, Intel i5, 2TB HDD, 100MBps ,WHM/cPanel , CentOS, and I am satisfied ,but the only problem is it is not manged by them, so you must know a little linux environment.

Do you want a vps to run sites on or software. I use bzybhosting for sites and I use scrapebox vps for remote desktop to run software.

Both are adequately priced and do me well. If you go out though and buy a 15 dollar vps you will have a headache from just trying to ftp sites up. It probably wont be a vps and will probably be a shared with cloaking software on it to fool you.

I wouldn't pay less than 40 for a hosting vps and thats a small one.

I recently ran into loads of problems with HG. Slow to load, lot's of downtime even an IPN forwarding issue which made running my membership site an impossibility. And the support was SH*T, 10 days trying to rectify the IPN issue.
Cut a long story short I moved over to LiquidWeb storm on demand VPS and happy with the decision. The cost is $60 a month fully managed with the option to scale up and down when required.

There are so many cheap VPS offers out there that offer a wide range of services--from complete main accessibility, immediate set-up and program set ups, Dark red on Tracks assistance, and the independence to select from a wide range of pre-installed operating-system, but you must create sure you can implement these functions when you do indication up for them.
Some people create the error of buying web servers with functions they do not implement. The best phase which you should take when experienced with different internet hosting choices is to select one that comes with the right solutions and functions.
These days, the pattern is to select cost-efficient solutions, not cheap ones. By saying cost-efficient solutions, this would mean selecting VPS offers that come with functions which you will most likely use. The most affordable known VPS offers today are unmanaged VPS programs that run on Linux systems techniques. Unmanaged VPS offers are also very simple to use, modify, and alter; however, it is essential have primary to innovative development know-how so you can sustain your VPS completely.

If you think about it then it all comes down to being lazy and not doing your own research on hosting companies. Hostgator and Bluehost are popular only because of the hefty commission they provide to their affiliates and so every one in IM niche is pushing it, including the IM gurus. It is the typical herd mentality.

That is also true as well, most of people will see that 20 people are saying a particular is good then they will assume it to be true without trying themselves.

Hostgator's shared hosting used to be quite good few years ago but they are not the same company anymore except for the brand name.

Cheap and good doesn't mix in VPS hosting.

Unmanaged VPS can be cheap, but that will cost you time to manage it yourself. A good vps you can try (if you can manage it yourself) is DigitalOcean.

Managed VPS is great, but will not cheap (mostly more than $35/month). I had great experience with KnownHost for managed vps. They are good provider but I found they are not very fast on dealing with critical tickets.
