Default 1and1 hosting leave them or stay with them

My web hosting is with 1and1.I am happy so far but when I compare with other hosting companies they are far behind when it comes to adding scripts, wordpress automation, ftp accounts (limitation 10max),...
do I add another hosting or just move everything to new one(hostgator maybe.)right now I am paying 5$ for 1and1.

1and1 is ****e for hosting. get hosting that offers unlimited domain, mysql etc
hostgator or hostmoster, go for hostgator as everyone says the customer service is quicker

Lose 'em. They're only good for lifetime privacy domains.

Yes, hostgator.com is best because it has lots of features when you seek for support.

I was with 1and1 and got away from them, because they did not allow me to install a few custom scripts (one of them being helpdesk script Cerbeus). A few days ago, a friend of mine stopped using 1and1 only because they asked him $10.00 additional to back up his databases (!).

I have heard that hostgator is good, but I had an unpleasant experience with them: they had an offer for the first month, which they did not honored; after fighting for a couple of days with them, I closed my account and I am not going back to them.

On the other side: for me, HostMonster is a very good hosting company; their help desk is very useful: they even help me to install scripts that was very difficult to install, in terms of requirements: the script needed some php extensions that were not "allowed" to install, although, HostMonster tech support guided me step by step to get that accomplished.

Hope this helps

I ahve been with 1&1 for several years and haven't had any issues, anything minor their tech people solved for me or walked me through it. However I do agree there is a frustration with them that they aren' t up to speed in some areas. Like I had a bear of a time loading my WP blog. They have mysql and if you don't understand how to set it up it can be frustrating. They offer word press but the capabilities are so limited you are better off uploading it yourself. They are working on adding new features and since I have 32 domains with them I cannot see transfering them. I do have one site hosted on hostgator and I find just getting to the sign in screen stressful, hate it. I move all my other domains over to 1&1.

I had php issues with 1&1 and their tech guy walked me through it and every thing is fine. Phone support couldn't help but the email support was right on point. I created a new .htaccess file with the new code and uploaded it and everything worked fine.

You should already have back ups of every website that you have with them, as well as a back up of your MySql database. If you don't have these back ups make them now and test that the back ups work (that's to ensure that nothing has been corrupted).

Do the above NOW and before you do anything else. If you already have back ups, again, test then to ensure that no files are corrupt.

Only then open a new hosting account and transfer your files. Point your DNS (domain name servers) for each domain to your new host (I hope that they are not registered with your existing host) and once they have propagated and you see your websites appearing on your new host, terminate your contract with your original web host provider.

I hope that this helps.

1&1 has awresome interface when it comes to managing your domains, databases, and content. It is the simplest and most efficient interface I have ever seen, but they charge higher than competitors.

What I like about them is that they are great for domain names & private domain registration is included for only $6.99 the first year ($8.99 2nd year and beyond) you can't beat that!

1and1 has a unique interface. It's unusual and quirky, and makes migrating to a different host difficult. I moved from 1and1 to Hostgator over a year ago, and have been very happy with Hostgator. Use a host like Hostgator which offers cpanel and fantastico. If you move hosts again, it will be easier to find another cpanel/fantastico host.

1and1 tech support is very good, but they are unique- quite unique... not too sure if that is good for a newbie with a bunch of questions.

I did have a close friend tell me that he lost his domain when trying to transfer from 1and1 to another domain.

Well I have to admit that even though I have a masters degree in computing, where I specialised in database design and implementation (some years ago now), I outsource the management of all of my databases.

Web sites can be re-written, but if you lose your databases, then you have lost all of your client/customer details, as you are very aware, I'm sure.

I have a trusted person who lives about 10 miles away from me (and charges reasonable rates) to store and test all of my database backups. I keep an off line copy myself too (just to be on the safe side). I rely on an email from him to confirm that each back up is functional.

I am sorry that I can't advise you on testing or restoring sql databases (fortunately to date, I have never had to restore), but I have included some links below, which might help. You could of course, open a new thread on the forum with a topic seeking the best methods of testing and restoring sql databases:

Backup and Restore of MySql database with phpMyAdmin

MySQL :: MySQL 6.0 Reference Manual :: 6.3 Using MySQL Backup

How can I Backup and Restore a MySQL database?

I wish you every success.

Jeff Henshaw.

Another host I highly recommend is HASTYHOST - affordable web hosting | shared, reseller, and vps. Been with them since last year, have a reseller account and support is fast (as in within the hour) and thorough. No down time either. And if they upgrade they tell you. And should you need an extra few days to pay an invoice, its no problem either. Great great host!
