Best Kindle Guides/Software/Tutorials?

by Melody

The hubby and I are really getting into Kindle, and quite honestly, love it! But a lot to learn yet so would love some recommendations on best formatting software, best tutorials, best 'out of the box' marketing guides etc.

So far, I really like Kinstant Formatter for actually formatting my books (Dennis Becker and Rachel Rolfe, I think?) but would be interested in other options that can format for some of the other online bookstores - so any suggestions?

For research and marketing ideas, I thought Kindle Edge (WSO by LilaJade- pricey for a WSO - but a real gem for research tips!) was amazing - her research tips were worth the price of admission.

And of course - anything by Paul Coleman, aka 'BookPumper'

I also was given an opportunity today to review a really comprehensive video and pdf A to Z tutorial by Stefan Pylarinos, Kindle Money Mastery | A Proven, Step-By-Step System To Making Passive Income On Kindle (NOT AN AFFILIATE LINK!). It's probably more than we are used to spending at the WF (we are so spoiled!!) but really rocks if you are looking for a real 'hand-holding' experience to get going with Kindle. The videos were very well done, and best in my mind - all the videos are backed up with pdfs. I hate having to take notes or going back to try and find that one little tidbit I needed 5 days later....kudos to Stefan for providing both!

So - would love to hear more recommendations from other Kindle authors: your favorite software, best overall marketing guides, etc - and definitely if you did not like something (especially software!) why you didn't care for it.

Thanks for the help!

Melody

    For fiction -

Kindling by Geoff Shaw and his FB group

Good Fiction Fast by Michelle Spiva and her FB group

    And both my guides...

If you want to write fiction, that's all you need, along with Scivener software

    ;-)

And, Tink, my apologies - I actually have both - "The Men's Guide to Writing Erotica for Women' was excellent and my fave for personal reasons. Giving away secrets here from my past but back when there were still print 'porn' mags out...I put myself through biz school writing short stories for them

And Shaw should definitely have been included.

    Thanks!

OMG! LOLOLOL I LOVE it! Good girl! I worship at your feet!<giggle>

I include Michelle Good Fiction Fast because she teaches structure, which was an extremely important piece of the puzzle for me. Back when i was a scene designer, I planned everything off of 4'x8' sheets of plywood...

Michelle taught me that the same underlying planning could, and often should, happen in fiction ;-)

Is this the same content that you got. To me it was a few pages of Fiverr people and little else.

      Thanks

      Derob

Can anyone tell me if they got anything different
      Hi Derob,

You got the whole thing. I must admit I feel the same way. In fact I said "uh oh" when I was trying to download what I'd bought and had to wade through hyped upsells and downsells, etc.(3 of them). One of them cost $97. When I saw those I was wondering what the offer I'd bought was going to be like. I wasn't surprised at what was there when I was finally able to download it. It is not totally without value but pretty disappointing.

Hi All - finally had a chance to really go through Castleman's product - and have changed my review above. I am all for anything that helps me find some new resources for outsourcing as I have lost way too much money over the years doing it on my own - but once I really had a chance to go through it...ouch. More fluff than content.

Kindle is the place I have decided to get into to start making money online and I actually started with Stefan's Kindle Money Mastery course that you mentioned. I've found it to be very easy to follow and I think its great for beginners like me...

I dabbled and tried some other methods online, but honestly it was confusing for me! I was getting overwhelmed so easily and decided to pick ONE METHOD and stick with it. I think Kindle is a good opportunity right now, but would like to branch out with some other methods out there down the road too. I think there's good opportunity to use kindle books to build a list also, and possibly make money as an affiliate.

But I am just getting started! So far I have just published 2 books and have seen a few sales come in, before even doing a free promo and getting many reviews. The cool thing about Kindle Money Mastery is that he teaches you how to outsource absolutely EVERYTHING. Its a fully automated business and he gets writers to write the books cheap and everything. I like his program, his style of communication, and the quality that he put behind it.

Thanks for the post Melody I am going to check out some more programs that you mentioned once I finish with Stefan's.

You don't need anything else but Geoff Shaw's Kindling. It's the best by far. Stay away from Tim Castleman's latest product. Not much there and he doesn't give refunds.

I really like the WSO put out by MaxProfit007 or Brock last month. The name is Steal the System that Produces 4000 Automated Kindle Sales a Week. Yeah the name is hyped but the content is excellent. It is total non- b.s. which I find refreshing. Brock admits he's not even close to a great writer but makes it clear it's all about giving people in a niche what they want and being entertaining. Speaking of not being great writers and making millions, John Locke and Amanda Hocking come quickly to mind.

Brock gives you a step by simple step method to make money on Kindle. The process is simple but you have to work at it. He advises that you sit down and write at least 2000 words a day or outsource. Anyhow I've bought my share of WSO's and wish I'd ran into this one at the start.

Man I am just seeing this.

I haven't been to the WF in over a year it seems like.

I'm sorry that you guys didn't like my KD Outsourcing product. I only use that product personally in my business to publish 7 books, but I can see how that wouldn't have been of any value.

I also do sell my stuff for a high amount ($197 usually) because I like keeping my classes smaller and give personal attention to my people.

I guess that's why they keep making money and say I've changed their lives (their words not mine).

At any rate, the product only sold a few thousand copies and continues to be my best selling product ever - but it's not for everyone.

And yes I do have upsells because anyone who doesn't is an idiot and leaving money on the table.

BTW, had you stuck with me you would have seen how far we've grown in kindle in a few short months and more importantly the lesson's we've learned and given away to our customers.

Be well all, and happy publishing.

          Tim

PS: It is correct that we don't do refunds. I don't like tire kickers or plate lickers and if $9 is that big of a deal you might try an additional job instead of a lotto ticket info product. Peace.

I just got reminded of this thread via an old email and I wanted to check in.

How's everyone's kindle business going? How are you guys doing with the other courses you bought???

Really excited to hear everyone's progress.

I'll share that way it's not awkward or anything.

Last year we published 27 books.

3 of them (that I wrote and used that crappy outsourcing guide mentioned above to help me) became Amazon Bestsellers.

I built a list of over 2000 readers.

We consistently make 4 figures a month on kindle (not bad considering slow months were we do nothing to make that).

I'm ramping up our outsourcing again and shooting for more books, etc in that area.

On another notes, despite our "crappy" kindle products we managed to have the largest launches last year (in terms of units sold) and our best year ever business wise (total sales and profit).

Also a few screenshots of our books as of today (5/6).

Can't wait to hear how your publishing businesses are going!
                  Another one here for Kindling.

And Tim, I wouldn't normally respond to this kind of thing but your tone and comments are outrageous so I will.

I just had a quick look at those books that you show in your screenshot. One is ranked at around 32k, one at 67.5k and another of your offerings at over 1million.

Not exactly setting the world on fire are you?

It's easy to rank high in an obscure category with low competition but to rank well overall? That's someone I want to talk to.

This will be a general defense of any Kindle publisher who creates a course/guide/whatever on how they built their success...so don't think I'm specifically defending Tim here, because I'm not.

I have noticed that when successful publishers focus their efforts on creating courses around their success the very fact that they're pulling time and energy away from promoting their books in order to create their courses reduces their book rankings and there is a temporary illusion of reduced success for their books.

I've seen this happen a few times for friends who had success with their books, create a product documenting their success, then their book rankings plummet because their attention was diverted for a little bit.

What publishers are now slowly learning (at least those whom I connect with) is that they need to outsource helpers/assistants who then maintain their book rankings, sales, marketing etc so they can concentrate on their courses and vice versa (assistants do customer service for the courses while they concentrate on marketing their books).

People are using Kindlespy and other tools as sort of an end-all resource for their market research, when that tends to only be part of the bigger picture.

I've personally seen the failings of the software, so we can't always rely on what it tells us anyway as a matter of principle and reliability of info it's giving us.

But I am hearing a lot of product creators get slammed for lack of success regarding what their sales pages and courses are espousing about what works, but it isn't always a sound argument to point at a arbitrary book they've published and question them for apparent lack of success.

I've seen this happen to Brad Callen for a health book he released, which plummeted in rankings for various reasons after he told some of his students about it. It's also happened to Stefan Pylarinos of the Kindle Money Mastery course and Wesley Atkins creator of KindleSpy. It happens to the greats as well as lesser known people as well. Those who have released WSO's on the forum, thereby focusing on the course instead of their book promotions, have felt the sting of diverted attention.

**On another note, can someone send me a link to Tim's courses as noted above? I can't seem to find anything on his courses, so I really can't comment on his work yet.

While I don't need your approval on my work, if you want to check out my kindle products 95% of them can be found here: Products

And just so you're all aware up front - we still don't do refunds on digital products - no exceptions. You can hate on us all you want, kick and scream and tell me how everyone else is doing it - but we don't. We don't want chickens, we want committed people who want to do something with themselves.

All I care about is results.

                    I have 3 bestsellers (fact)

I make 4 figures a month from these books (also fact)

Now - the question is - can you beat those results and the money made from them.

IF you can, I'm all ears and eager to listen.

If you can't, then I would suggest stop telling people more successful than you how they should do something.

I know that's harsh to hear but it's the truth - if someone is getting a result that you aren't, listen to them.

And I stand by my statement - look at all the people who trashed my products - none of them responded. They all gave up and moved on.

But I didn't and that's why I have the success I do in and out of self publishing.

Hate all you want, but numbers don't lie or have an ego.

Hmmmm. Tire kickers and plate lickers? Peace? Changing people's lives is heavy stuff. I'm thinking that kind of comment should come from those that have been changed.

I know that upsells are part of the business but anyone who doesn't include one or three is an idiot? Wow! What if they just wanted to help people and not make a killing? Best of luck Tim Castleman.

            Tim,

$9 is a lot of money to pay for crap, which I'm sorry to say , your Kindle product was crap.
It was by far the worst Kindle product I've ever purchased, and I've purchased many.

Just because someone finds your product to be of little value doesn't make him or her a tire kicker. It makes them a pissed off customer.

If you want to keep pissing off you customers, suit yourself Ultimately you're the one that loses.

The guru solution by Sean Roach is Publishing Catapult - Catapulting Authors To Best Seller Success!

Not a cheap course and I didn't pay what it is being sold for but it is comprehensive and like what Ryan Deiss of Digital marketer was promoting for Kindle it would give you a solid foundation.

Personally I don't sell kindle books for the income they generate but for the leads that they put into my system.

If you just want to publish you don't really need any course but if you are part of a community and can leverage reviews and launch type sequences then buying or joining a group that can help with positioning is worthwhile.

Man ... I'm kinda confused here.

I came back to see how everyone who originally commented here was doing with self publishing.

I posted my update and even took the added step of PMing everyone in this thread asking them to post their updates - and so far nothing.

      What gives?

I mean if I could use my "crappy" products to produce 27 books, become a 3 time bestseller and make 4 figures a month and people here didn't like them - surely those people who posted that they didn't like my stuff have to have found something better that helped them out and is producing real results.

Come on guys post your updates, I want to know what's working and not working for you and what your results are with what you're using.

Lol I've been following the thread because I'm a member of Kindling and Kindle Money Mastery but I haven't posted because I'm currently working on my books.

I have 1 fiction series around 4 books long, 1 non-fiction book and 1 book I probably won't publish based on metaphysics.

I've only been planning/writing for the past month or so, but the first book should be ready to publish very soon. I had so much stuff on my plate earlier in the year, but I'm thankful i have the time to write now and get some published work out there.

Kindle Money Mastery is the best non-fiction course I've seen and Kindling is the best for fiction.

I've also been following the guidelines of "Immediate Fiction" by Jerry Cleaver just to flesh out my fiction characters a bit more.

I'm currently writing everything myself, but if the workload gets too great (namely for the non-fiction, sine I like writing fiction way more) I'll definitely outsource that since I know a few writers who can use some work.

          Heavy -

I'm curious what made you come to the conclusion that both of those courses were the best out there?

I asked around facebook kindle groups, bought a few myself and they are definitely the most comprehensive.

Kindle Money Mastery focuses more on marketing (which many kindle authors are very weak in) and Kindling focuses on the actual writing. Combine the two and you have a powerhouse of writing and marketing.

Rachel Rofe's Ultimate Kindle Course was pretty good as well, but I like Stefen's more.

I've also seen smaller courses, but they didn't go nearly into the depth needed to cover proper marketing and structure of writing.

When i get into something, and for 2015 i decided kindle was the way to go for me, I immerse myself almost completely getting my hands on everything i can.

Out of the 20ish courses I've seen for writing/kindle so far, Kindling and KMM are definitely the top of the batch.

Sure I can post proof of you spamming me with emails even though your unsubscribe function ignores me. Thanks for getting my post deleted and me warned for banning, I will risk it with this post, as you have actually asked for proof.

Even if I knew how to do that (and I dont) I still wouldn't do that. If you want to leave then do. I can't force you to be successful and if you're happy where you are in life and business then great.

Also you clearly don't know what spam is - my list is 100% buyers so the only way you got on there was buying something from me.

If if you look in that last email (up top) it's where we delivered your Kids Plots to you - you know the ones you signed up for and bought from us - and then joined the monthly membership to keep getting updates.

That's why you get our emails. So we're not spamming you.

I know that. At the bottom of your email is an unsubscribe function. I have tried following that EIGHT times and it never unsubscribes me. A select few other "marketers" email list do the same thing; the unsubscribe function DOES NOT WORK.

I don't want your emails any more but because your unsub link doesn't work, the only choice I have is to delete the whole mailbox and therefore email address, or keep recieving your spammy emails. Why do you send the same "offer" up to 4x per day? Are your readers blind?/ When you speak to people, do you repeat yourself 4x, every time?

I worried about you and that you must be a special kind of stupid. One that I haven't encountered in the wild and one that frankly makes me impressed / terrified that you've survived this long.

What part of I don't do that did you not understand? Should I use smaller words with you or perhaps photos would help.

If you unsubscribe from a list, you're gone. I don't NOT allow you to unsubscribe.

I also have never sent 4 emails in a day. I have sent multiple emails in the same day - usually because you didn't open the first email.

Why? Because that's what I do - it's called marketing and according to my accountant it makes us 7 figures.

But you keep trying and good luck surviving.

Well you obviously re-add people because yet again I have unsubscribed and, oh what a suprise, more emails from Tim Castleman (3 of them are the same yet again).

Making 7 figures from spamming people with affiliate links, what an achievement. Your parents must be so proud of you.

My parents are super proud of me, I mean they see how I have to deal with people like you daily and are just surprised I have any hair left at all.

But enough about me man, tell me about you.

What have you done with your life or even through self publishing. I'd love to see what your expert opinion is on the kindle publishing stuff and what you've discovered through self publishing.

It is funny how you keep asking me questions publically and then when I answer them, you report me and I get PM's from moderators telling me if I don't stop "tarnishing you" I will be banned.

But I digress, I own 4 amazon KDP accounts with a total of 151 assets (books). It is a little hard to gauge my current situation with the change in KU as of this month but before that I was pulling 5 figures monthly in a total of sales/KOLL borrows and KU borrows + the D2D platforms.

All of my books are ranked over 1000 (and by over I mean higher than - higher being poorer performance in this case) yet the cumaltive total of them provides a great income. All of them except one 6 part series are totally paid off in business terms; they have produced enough income that all the money it took to create them (ghostwriter charges, cover, intial promos, copywriting) is paid for. The final 6 part should have matured this month but with the shake up on KU and the constant changes because of it in both number of competitors in Select and the monthly Fund, there is no way of predicting income accurately anymore. Which is fine, clever business people know the reasoning and sense behind not spending all the money you create in case things like this happen.

Ofcourse this is where you get out your soapbox and claim that my success is entirely down to your product.... no it really isn't. All you do is write a few guides... and then send 5 emails a day for the rest of the year promoting other peoples products with your affiliate links in them...other people have mentioned products with total portals and huge FB groups and you shoot them down...crazy attitude.

        Goodbye.

p.s your comment to someone on your website was absolutely disgusting.

        http://i.imgur.com/9ShFWTN.png

p.p.s I notice your amazon review history shows how you leave 1 stars for all of your competitors books in your niches. Maybe you should write a new "guide" telling prospective Kindle authors how to make lots of cash; leave bad reviews for their competitors books! I am one of the original members of the WF, not the 'NEW' WF, but the old one that was started for those of us that were Allan Say's hosting customers. The only reason I mention this is simply to say that I have been around here for a LONG time (and yeah, I am old, too)

In all those years, I have never publicly complained about the behavior of another Warrior, unless it involved a purchase that did not work, lack of support etc. I have never complained about anyone's posts, behavior towards others etc - but today I make that exception.

Tim Castleman's behavior in this thread is reprehensible. It seems that no one is allowed to prefer any kindle course over his, and not only is he bashing everyone here in the thread - but he is doing so via PM as well. I won't go into details here - but his comments are insulting and without base.

Tim, I don't know what your problem is but people are actually entitled to their own opinion, and if they think another course is better than yours - that is their opinion, and should be respected.

And - just because I choose to NOT come here and tout my success in self-publishing, it does not mean that I am not successful.

I have a life away from the WF, and in fact, have spent very little time here over the past year. I don't need your bashing simply because I did not come back here to let everyone know what I was doing.

Get a life, move on, and do not PM me again.

Sad Panda Melody and thanks for finally replying here with your experience.

For the record, I'm 100% cool with people not liking me or my product. What I am not ok with is people who haven't actually USED the product talking trash about it.

I'm also not ok with people who aren't even in self publishing anymore (you know cause they switch directions like most people switch underwear) bashing my stuff.

Again, it's cool not to like me or my products - as long as you gave it an honest effort.

Also thanks for the PM and congrats on your results - you're doing amazingly well and I'd even pay you money to learn your "secrets"

But only if I can bash them without trying them first. I kid.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

My post has nothing to do with my experience in publishing or your product - it is only about the completely unprofessional behavior that you have displayed in your PMs to me, and to the posters here.

As I said in my response to your last PM - you have completely burned this bridge, and I do not want to see any further PMs from you.
