Hosting Companies Review

I don't know if we have another forum, or if we need to create such a forum, to discuss the teachnical side of IM. In case this is not the right forum (But I guess this is the closest) feel free to point this out.

I have used several hosting companies. Nowadays everyone thinks hosting is cheap but not exactly, a $5/month hosting is just crap. You can use it to run toy web sites with static contents. But if you wanted to run a blog or other dynamic web sites, hosting is not cheap anymore if you need 99% uptime, email confirmation enabled, timely support, etc. The shared hosting environment is terrible, you need to contact support, get help in days if you are lucky enough and the support guy knows what he/she is talking about. Many times like email it stopped working suddenly, again and again.

I did lots of research and found good review about startlogic recently, but it turns out that that review does not mean anything - I now ended up in the same situation. I would turn into warriors here asking for your recommendations.

If you wanted to run blogs, Joomla, Moodle, etc., need 99% uptime and timely support plus email confirmation for site registrations, what companies do you recommend? How long have you been with them. You know I am not talking about $100/month dedicated hosting.

If all fails, I am going to host all this in my home.

If you need more than shared hosting try a vps hosting plan or a semi-dedicated plan. These will cost between $25-$50 per month and will give you a lot more server resources to use.

Ya, like Andrew said, a virtual private server (VPS) might be what you need.
I use HostICan.com for my VPS, and they have been great.

I started using them about a year ago, and havnt had any real issues, and their support is good too.

You will have to pay more for a VPS... but if you need it, then you need it. I would stay away from doing it myself in home.

I believe that Kiosk is good. I don`t use them but
I have only read good things about them.

I used to use crystaltech... but now someone led me onto hostgator and I doubt I will ever turn my back on them. They are freaking awesome

I also have had midphase, but IMO, they suck big time.

HostGator is a great hosting company. The support is good and the up time is excellent. Been using them for quite sometime. Never had any down time and they are good about working with you if you have a special request of some kind.
Another hosting company I have recently started using is Blue Host. Only been with them for a few months b ut they have timely responses. Live Chat, phone, or email support. Both of these have 24/7 support.

I too tried Mid-Phase. Too costly and the support "sucks!"

I've had reseller hosting with Dixie Systems - A Division of 451 Press, LLC (direct link) for 5+ years and have been VERY happy with them.

                Check them out.

I manage some Wordpress blogs for people, that got shut down on the $5 sites like Lunar Pages (horrible!) and GoDaddy due to volume. Since moving to the grid-service at MediaTemple, all is well. May want to consider them.
