Macbook Pro or Windows based laptop?

Mac book Pro and then get a small dell PC for cheapie. Thats the set up I have I can't live without my mac but I need my PC too...

One very important consideration for those thinking of getting their first Mac...

You can run MacOS X and Windows side by side on the same computer.

You don't have to "give up" Windows.

Mac is definitely the way to go.

Why is it so special...you should go down to your local Apple store and play around with one for a short while and you will see

I never even thought about Macs until a couple of years ago when I needed a new laptop. I decided to have a look in the local Apple store as I heard been hearing good things about them everywhere and I also preferred the way they looked.

Just playing around with the macbook for a few minutes and my decision was made. Its just so pleasant to use. Boots up and shuts down quick. Is pleasing on the eye and also to the touch, the keyboard is great. I was a bit concerned that I wouldnt know how to use the mac having used windows all my life, but its so simple and intuitive it has not been a problem. Also I run VMWare Fusion on it so I have Windows too in case its needed for some programs, best of both worlds, but I rarely use it.

Now looking to get an iMac of Mac Pro in place of the desktop which is due to be replaced soon and of course I have an iPhone

Yeah, get a mac pro...

I changed over from pc last year and won't be going back, I run windows xp via vmware for the tools that are pc only. You can have osx and windows running at the same time and switch between them as quick switching between browser tabs!

The only thing I didn't like was the one button mouse so I got myself a logitech vx nano, great combo!

I switched over to Mac a couple of months ago from a PC. Sure, there are some tools that you can't use but generally there are alternatives. Best decision I ever made - seriously. No crashing, no viruses, doesn't get progressively slower, staggeringly powerful, very simple to use and it looks absolutely beautiful.

I reckon my productivity has gone up by about 50% since getting my Mac as it's now such a joy to sit down and work.

Will never go back to Microsoft - EVER!

Deffo a mac I have a 13'alu macbook for approximately 6 months now and Ive never experienced a lag, neither any freezes crashes etc. It takes few hours to get used to new layout etc but you wont regret.

Yes, you can use both mac osx and windows at the same time via VMware/parallels, switch between them and record it all, I use snap pro x for this, its like a camtasia equivalent for mac.

My daughter wants to get a new Macbook and I'm researching the best sales outlets. Can anyone recommend "where to buy for the best price?"

We've been to the Apple Store here in ATL and I've chatted with MacMall; we've also looked into the Student discount avenue (not very much) and are looking into the PX route since her brother's in the USAF.

Any suggestions??

Macmall and some of the other retailers will bundle software or printers with a purchase (like bonuses). Sometimes there are deals on a slightly older model or just before a new one comes out. Best place to see the deals available is at dealmac.com: The best deals on iPod, iMac and MacBook. Find sales on Macs, new and refurbished Apple systems..

Just in case you haven't bought your Mac yet, here is a way to get a killer deal on a Mac...

Buy a slightly used Macbook Pro from eBay or Craigslist with Apple Care (Apples own 3 year replace anything that breaks warranty)...or buy a slightly used Mac that is less than one year old and then buy Apple Care from Apple for $349.00 (For Macbook Pro) or the exact same thing on eBay for only $163.00. Do that and you will save a fortune over buying a new one. Apple Care is totally transferable regardless of how many people have owned the Mac. And if the Mac is less than one year old, and again, regardless of how many people have owned it, you can still purchase Apple Care. If you want more RAM, MacSales.com (OWC) is a reputable company with great deals on compatible RAM.

I started using Macs in 1984 and loved them. About nine years ago I had to switch to Windows because of something I was doing at the time and I couldn't afford both a Mac and a Windows PC then. Anyway, I was okay with Windows for the most part until last year when my new one month old 17" HP went whacky on me and then the replacement for it went bad a couple months ago due to Vista's SP 3. Thats it! Between the time I wasted with the computer last year that went bad and now again this year, I am now so over with Windows and am back to using Macs. The cool thing is that I was able to trade my almost one year old 17" HP laptop that I might have been able to sell for maybe $500.00 for a less than one year old 15" MacBook Pro. Then on Craiglist I found a 17" Macbook Pro for only $1300.00 and sold the 15" to my girlfriend. I got Apple Care from eBay for less than half price and 6 gigs of RAM from Macsales.com and a 24" Sceptre externa display from Costco for only $200.00 and now I have the most killer setup ever. This week I will be installing VM Ware Fusion (or maybe just use Bootcamp) so I can use Xsitepro2 and a couple other little Windows-only programs. Thats it man! Now I will have the best of both worlds! If you want to create a virtual machine because you have some Windows-only programs; you can buy an older version of VM Ware Fusion from eBay for only $20.00 and then immediately go to their website and upgrade it to the latest edition for free. That will save you about $60.00.

Macs are elegant and so well thought out. Like a good tool in the hand, even the keyboard and trackpad of my Macbook Pro just feels right. I had forgotten how awesome the way the folders are laid out too. All the trackpads I have ever had were plastic and my fingers would kind of stick on them. I hated using them and use a Logitech wireless mouse because it has a tiny little cool usb plug and I can right click with it. You don't have to use a mouse though because the trackpad on this Mac works amazingly well. I swear! You won't appreciate that until you actually use it. Apparently its made out of glass.

get a mac, its just a better computer overall

for running windows stuff, i use parallels, with vista in "coherence mode"

meaning i can run anything windows or mac, all from the same desktop, but with the computing power of a mac

Get a Mac! Windows has actually gotten a lot better with the release of Windows 7. But, I still like Leopard.

The switch to Mac is seamless because you can easily be on your PC at the same time using VMWare Fusion and if you need to share files, all you do is create a shared folder when installing VMWare (it is just selecting a button, no "networking" required")

The one thing you will notice is that they think alot more with the end user in mind (except for IMovie 08 which is not user friendly at all, but everything else, like IWork is the rest of the ILife Suite is fantastic.

For example, installs are much less of a hassle and there are easy ways to organize and search for stuff on your computer if you're the creative or right brained type that leaves files scattered everywhere.

You can also run Bootcamp which just allows you to start up in one mode or the other altogether (PC or Mac)

I say go with Mac (one with at least 3 GB of ram) and then run Windows through VM Ware or Parallels.

That's my set up.

I run VM Ware on my mac and still use several PC programs
such as Frontpage, IP Switch, and Camtasia

I had used a pc for years. Switched to a MacBook pro 2 years ago. I love it. So simple to us even my 3 year old can use it. I will not be going back. I use vmware when I need windows for some of the programs that do not work on a mac. Just cannot say enough good about it.

Macs are easy to use and great for any kind of graphics, video or audio editing. Extremely user friendly. However you pay up the wazzoo for them I have a MacPro 8 Core with 16GB ram, 4 TB of storage. Cost me $5k.

I started using Macs when they first came out in 1984 after using a dos pc for a while. It was a no brainer the first time I saw the Mac gui and that was the end of pc's for me for almost 20 years. I really didn't want to change but I started using pc's again because of some forex trading but am now seriously thinking of going back to a Mac. I just wish they cost less!

So here are a few questions please...

1) Someone in this thread said Macs don't slow down later and get funky like pc's do. How come?

2) Macs are supposed to be much better for working with photographs. Is that true? And if so, why?

3) I have really fast broadband where I live. Will I be sacrifing speed if I buy a Mac laptop?

4) What is the downside (besides cost) for a Mac compared to a PC?

5) I was at a 2 day seminar recently and it seemed like the Mac users had much longer battery life than the PC users? Is that true?

Specs wise it's better than the new 13" aluminum Macbook laptop so I dont want to spend $1500 to downgrade my system. I've read on another forum that you can "hack" your way to install Mac OS into a PC. Does anyone have any feedback on this?

I saw an ad for a 'Hackintosh' about a month ago on Craigslist. Since then I've seen that term used a few times so you might try doing a Google search for Hackintosh and see what you come up with.

I would go with the MacBook Pro, as some others mentioned, you can run bootcamp to get XP or Vista (probably W7 too). You can also run Parallels to get windows running inside of Mac OS X with seamless integration.

For anyone else looking for a deal on a MacBook...

If you're a student, or a parent of a student, you can buy a new MacBook from the Apple store for a great deal. You get $50 off, plus a free iPod Touch (!), plus $100 off a new printer. My friend brought me along, and he got $100 off an End-of-Life MacBook Pro (it ended up costing the same as a new MacBook), the iPod Touch, and a free HP printer (they also have $100 Canon printers). The sale is over on Sept. 8, 2009.

This is a much better deal than a $600-700 used MacBook from Craigslist IMO.

I've only had Mac laptops since around '95 so I can't compare to PC. One advantage I know Mac's have over PC's though is that I don't have to worry about the viruses and crashes that I hear PC people talking about. Also, I'm a songwriter and the built in garageband is extremely beneficial for me.
