Default IP addresses and Domain names

I want to start with 2 websites and add a few more in the first year. I need to decide on a web host, but as I look at hosts I realize that there is much I dont know.

My primary question is this.
1 host will offer 15 IP adresses so that your domains can have independent
IP addresses, control panels, and everything else for independent control over each site.
This makes perfect sense to me.
Another host only offers 1 IP address with unlimited or many domain names and 1 control panel.

How can many domain names only have 1 IP address ?
How does all of this work ?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi,

It's best to google technical questions like this. There is a lot of information.

I'm not an expert, but basically an IP address, is just an address. You can have multiple websites on the same IP address. The way these are identified from other sites is through the different domain name.

It's a bit like having an apartment in a condominium. All share a common address, apart from the final door number.

Most of my sites are on hosting plans which have the same IP addresses.

Only if the sites are in the same niche, are large, or when I want to do some inter-site linking do I put them on separate IP addresses.

Basically, google and the other search engines know the IP addresses of the host that has your site on it. If these are similar sites or link between themselves in some way, then google easily spots this and can ignore this linking at best, or penalise it at worst.

If you are building big, independent sites, with some cross linking, or you are worried about having your site on the same IP address as someone else's, then buy separate IP addresses for them.

15 IP addresses? that must cost at least $50 a month +

only reason to have different IP addresses

You dont want to associate content on one domain with the other domains for the possible reasons
  • you are link building by building sites and linking to yourself. but this only works if they are on different Class C
  • You want to keep you different sites content private from one another. Say that you want to host a personal blog and also a questionable site. and you dont want snoopers to find the association
Really unless you have a really good reason, $5 a month shared hosting should do you fine to start.
