for anyone that has practical knowledge about creating ebooks, i'm going to be preparing a few and had a couple of questions.

first off, can't an ebook be created simply via a pdf...such as by being prepared on a word doc, adjusting the margins a bit, adding a few pics, and converting to a pdf? why then is there so much ebook creation software out there?

also, i'm interested in designing attractive covers. i'm seeing a lot of 3d/virtual ebook cover software programs out there, any recommendation on a good one?

thanks in advance,
bj

    BJ,
I highly recommend you just go with PDF files. Most ebook software programs are exe's for windows based computers, so you lose Mac and Linux based systems.

Another reason you'll find is a lot of folks won't want to mess with an exe due to security concerns because exe files can contain a virus or other malware.

Finally, most people - in my opinion, no facts to back this up - use these programs in fear that others will steal their content. well - its just a fact of life folks are going to steal your work and there's not much you can economically do to prevent it. Its just a cost of doing business.

So again - I'd recommend just writing your book and printing it out as a pdf file. Search the forum and you'll find plenty of recommendations for that, but I personally use both the full version of Acrobat and Open Office Writer.

I don't have anything to recommend on ebook creation software, so hopefully someone else can chime in here.

    good luck!

I use OpenOffice.org for PDF creation, and it works just fine.

I think it has most of the important features you need, and it's FREE! Easy to use, too.
