They are the same: owned by the same parent company:

But one has a gator as their logo... how cool is that?!

Kidding aside, I use HostGator and it's been a good experience thus far.

All I can tell you is I used Hostgator for about 8 years and recently ditched them because they merged with a bigger company and ever since their servers have been changed over and the down-time has been much worse.

For what it's worth I now use LiquidWeb and have been very happy with it.

Hmmm. Good to know. I'll have to give Liquid Web a try.

They are both the same company. Hostgator used to be good and since they merged, well...

I use Godaddy. At least I get a live person on the phone 24/7 and they don't play silly games with their affiliates.

I've enjoyed success with hostgator and my websites and their customer service has always been there when needed. I wasn't aware of the Hostgator merger.

I would recommend WPengine for dedicated wordpress hosting ..speeds up to 4 x faster than most hosts, but a bit pricey ..you get what you pay for in this world.

I had a problem with HostGator and changed to HawkHost.

HostGator shut down service to my hosting (my blogs went down) without any warning because of cache issues. I wish they would have given me at least 24 hours notice before-hand. I would have gladly made the changes they wanted / needed as quickly as possible so that I would not have lost earnings unnecessarily.

Oh well... live and learn !

Hostgator servers have been down more than one day in the last 6 months (since the merger). A client was using them and called us to fix it. Another uses GoDaddy and has had issues with them. We've like super fast service and 100% hosting up time at a great price with NameCheap.com. Have used them several years.

how about some more details about your site(s)? "hits" or "visits" doesn't really equate to anything..

    what type of site?

    location preference?

    what's your budget?

does the site have a lot of images?

where are most of your visitors?

what, if any, problems are you are have you faced so far?

Hostgator is the best hosting provider right now. There support is now terrible. I am now using JaguarPC for my personal uses though I have a reseller from HostGator.

I have been a Hostgator customer and fan for more than 4 years, they answer all the tech issues and responds quickly. I have 2 shared accounts with lots of personal sites they are running all good.

I have 1 client site in Bluehost, and I found they are very laggy, the support doesn't help with tech questions, all they say is to tell the developer to fix it. Also this client had just 1 site on the shared server but site was slow. Even page speed tool suggests that server response time is bad.

So in a nutshell I recommend hostgator.

Tip: Get a baby plan (middle one) that allows you to have multiple domains/sites per account.

Hostgator should be fine with even 5k-6k of traffic. Make sure to use caching plugins etc.

I just left hostgator after being a customer for more than five years. Since their sale/merger I've had big problems with their support which was impeccable in the past. Really unfortunate to watch them slide.

I've recently switched all my sites over to LiquidWeb and have found their support to be out of this world fantastic!

Someone else already said, "You get what you pay for" and I'm echoing that sentiment 100% when it comes to hosting.

Both are the same you can go for either of them. I personally prefer Hostgator as I have seen couple of my clients using it and they are really happy with it.
Hostgator also offer 50% OFF on any web hosting plans which I guess is a good deal

I've had a Hostgator reseller account for several years, and I haven't seen any of the problems with downtime or reduced/reluctant/rude service. Keeping my fingers crossed.

My account was down for a few hours when they did an upgrade of some kind on that bank of servers, but they warned me about it several days in advance...

A lot of people here are saying that they are the same company, which is only sort of true. Both BlueHost and HostGator are owned by the parent company EIG, but not all aspects of the services are merged together so they really should not be thought of as the exact same companies.

Both are fairly good hosts and either should be fine for 2k views/month.

One difference that may be important to you is that HostGator offers a reasonable priced plan with a monthly billing cycle while BlueHost requires a longer commitment.

    Also,
hostgator is good. but bad for affiliates. They dont pay them. But that is not what you asked for ^_^
That's just not true. Both BlueHost and HostGator have well run affiliate programs and both offer very large commissions. There are however clearly explained requirements that someone must be a first-time HostGator customer and they must remain active for at least 60-90 days.

I did one site for a client on bluehost a year or so back.. I found it very weird.. I can't recall but possibly it was their c-panel was just different than the one I've been used to on hostgator.

I still have almost all of my sites on hostgator, and had very few problems and found their telephone support to be very good.

Hostgator is amazing because of the fact alone that any time of the day or night any day of the year I can click live support and chat with someone within 2 or 3 minutes and have anything I need done just like that

Namecheap runs circles around HostGator, and any of the other brands.

"better performing" as in 3 almost "full day" datacenter outages?

EDIT: And if you're unsure, they're ALL on the same hardware - same servers, same routers, same switches in the same DC.

Both have pretty crappy page load speeds. Look forward to 10 seconds plus to load your page. This is my experience with both.

The host I use now is 1 - 1.5 seconds to load the same page that hostgator or blue host would take 10 seconds plus.
