recommendation for a dedicated host?

hey, I'm launching a new website and want to have a dedicated host,
can someone recommend me a good service for a reasonable price?

I'm going to run a PHP server so I suppose I'll a server with apache, and cpanel.
also, I guess it's better if the server would be located in the U.S., and needs to support http compression.
the nameserver would be ns.myodmain.com, right?
are there any other considerations?

thanks!

Start with a shared host, the cheaper the better. Migrate/uppgrade as the site grows.

Premium webhosting http://darkenil.com. Superfast hosting with SSD servers starting from just $1/month.

If you are looking for managed server:
    beyondhosting.net

I'm using their VPS and did not have any problems. Customer service responds quickly.

I also heard good things about:
    knownhost.com

I also read on Pat Flynn's blog that he is using StormOnDemand.

thanks, but what's a managed server exactly? who's managing what? and as opposed to what alternative?
I see godaddy offers dedicated servers from $99, but they don't mention cPanel.. and hostgator from $174, why are there such big price differences?
knownhost.com charges even more, I would have expected the less known hosts to charge less than the big players, doesn't it make sense?

      Hello,

A managed dedicated server is dedicated server that is quite often used by individuals or businesses that don't have an IT staff and/or don't know anything about servers or server companies.

I've been with Hostdime for a dozen years or so...the last 8 or 9 of them on a managed dedicated box.

You can read from the page below if you are wondering what the term "managed server" means to Hostdime. A fully managed server will usually run substantially more money than a dedicated server that is not managed by the webhost.

      Managed Web Hosting

While I also have a couple of Hostgator shared accounts --> Hostdime IS NOT Hostgator. You can click to the main page to see configurations and prices.

      Hope that helps.

      Regards,

      -don

Thanks, I've read through the page in your link but I'm still a little confused, they make it sound as if when you don't choose managed hosting, you would not be able to receive support (e.g., "FTP troubleshooting"), is that necessarily correct?

Right now I'm running websites on a shared host, I think it means that hundreds of websites are hosted on the same IP address. I got cpanel, and simply use the ftp to upload files and deifne the .htacess when needed. does that mean that right now I'm on a managed server?

I simply want a very fast server, a unique IP of my own (I've read some hosts even offer you 2 or 3 IP's), and to have ns.mydomain.com as my nameserver. this is also for SEO purposes as I've read that you can rank higher if your site loads faster.

Does this mean I need a dedicated server? or a VPS? what's the difference?
and is a managed server necessarily dedicated?

There are tons of web hosting companies, I would go with a trusted company, liquidweb comes to mind.

Quality dedicated servers are available from a2hosting and vdsinside.
Their servers are solid and uptime is high. Network is fully-redundant.
    Prices are competitive.

For something like this I would recommend HOSTGATER I've heard good feedback for them. And even though it might cost you more, but I think it's worth it. I've had experience for cheaper services and you ended up having problems on their products.
so, it's better off to pay a little more then to finding difficulties at the end for something that you pay less. remember, you get what you paid for.
