Feedback: Bright Cove video hosting site

A little over a month ago, I started using Bright Cove to host videos. I fell in love with their player, as it was perfect for displaying my Success Man ifesto 2011 videos (still haven't found a good player for displaying Amazon S3 videos on a blog). I liked Bright Cove's system (video player, upload, etc) so much, I told my list all about it.

A month later, the love affair is over. Sure, the videos played well. But, customer service is non-existent. I had a one-month trial account, but I could never find how to upgrade or how much it would cost. One month later, with all 16 SM2011 installments uploaded, I get a notice that my trial period is up and if I don't upgrade in 7 days they will close my account.

So, I send in a help ticket asking how I can upgrade. No answer. I know they have my e-mail, because they (or their bot) sent me a notice of expiration. Not to give up so easily, I go in hunt of a phone number. This supposedly big company has no phone number or physical address on their website.

Google to the rescue. I find a phone number hidden in their privacy policy. I call it. Of course, I get an answering machine. I politely give all my details and ask them to e-mail me the information. Lotsa luck.

Today, they shut down my account.

Fortunately, I spent the last few days uploading all my SM2011 videos to Viddler and I simply embedded them on the blog. Pain in the posterior, but at least the videos are back up.

Needless to say, I shall never ever deal with Bright Cove again. I'm shocked at their lack of service, especially since I wanted to give them money. It boggles my mind that any company would make it that difficult for would-be customers.

This may or may not be your lot with them, but I'm sticking with Amazon and Screencast. They are willing to take my money, and give me service in return.

Thanks for the heads up Kevin..I'm shopping around for video hosting at the moment and was leaning toward Screencast although Bright Cove certainly looked the part too. Thanks for saving me some time and headaches and even though yours is one example one is enough for me!

I considered trying out Bright Cove just a couple of weeks ago. I signed up for Amazon's S3 because it looked like a great service at a great price. The problem for me is the learning curve looks to be a little steeper than I cared to work with right now.

I saw you were using Screencast while watching a video from the Traffic Generation Lab Workshop. I checked them out and decided to go with them. Amazon will be cheaper if I start using much bandwidth, but I wanted a quick solution so I could get going with my videos. I'll take time to learn more about S3 later.

Yeah. I still use Screencast too. I like them. Amazon was a bit of a learning curve, but not bad. I installed the S3Fox plugin on my Firefox, and that made it real easy (like FTP). It's just the players that still have me looking for a better option. Many players play FLV, but I now create MP4 videos.

Not for me though Kevin. I've always had to use the updated .pdf files to get the Success Manifesto information. I have a broadband connection, but due to my location it is slow.

The videos were so "jerky" as to be impossible to watch and listen to on the fly.

Normally with videos I can usually let them download on "pause" and play them (sometime hours) later. Not with the Success Manifesto videos though, if you tried to play them (after the supposed download) then they simply started reloading again from the beginning.

I did not contact you with details of my difficulties as I thought that it was a problem on my end. Thinking about it now though - if I could eventually watch just about all videos, except for Success Manifesto videos, the problem must have been elsewhere.

Thank goodness that you have parted company with that Company (no play on words intended!)

        Onward and Upward.

        Regards,
        Jeff.

I've heard a few bad things about Bright Cove now so thanks for confirming that I should run the other way!

I don't know if it's me, my computer, broadband or what but videos hosted on Amazon are always choppy and they appear to buffffffffffffer very slowly. Since other videos play fine me thinks it's Amazon.

I dig Viddler as well. No complaints.

As of today, they have all been changed to Viddler videos, so you should be able to watch them smoothly.

Kevin, I had a similar problem to Jeff. It seemed your page loaded apart from the video and it froze the whole of firefox until it finally downloaded the video. I also used the pdf, and went today took 10 seconds to load the whole page.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm looking into getting a business account with Viddler, as I am very pleased with their streaming and quality. Might be a better solution than Amazon.

        Kevin,

As soon as I see a video is hosted on Amazon, I groan. Often they are unwatchable because the download speeds are throttled back so much.

I have to decide whether the info is going to be so good that I am willing to take an hour or two to watch a 10 minute video.

With Viddler and Vimeo I have no such problems.

        Martin
