Non EIG Hosting Recommendations

I have been having a lot of trouble with Hostgator lately (very long wait times for CS).

Can someone recommend non-EIG options that are reasonably priced?

Alternatively, please recommend an EIG company if you are very satisfied with it.
(Please do not recommend a company if you are an affiliate. Honest reviews needed.

      Hows your Page Speed with GoDaddy though? I'm guessing its terrible. At least it has been with the clients I've had there. I've seen SEO boosts from literally doing NOTHING but switching from GoDaddy. Again I'm not saying anything is wrong with your site... just my experience from 10s of clients I've had who hosted with GoDaddy...

      I'm presuming its because of 2 things
      1) Their IP addresses are filled with hundreds if not thousands of sites per IP (Google 'says' having spammy sites hosted near/on your IP doesn't matter... but I highly doubt that)
      2) Their page response is terrible mid-afternoon. Even just an extra millisecond or two can cause you valuable positioning on Google's index. Why? Google's whole business is serving results to their search customers. People think their site is only hit once a day or so by Google... but thats not true (especially for bigger sites). The one site I run (that gets 4-6 million hits a day) gets hit by Google hundreds of times a day. Why? Are they looking for new content? No. They are testing how fast I respond and that I'm actually up. So if I happen to be slow... or even worse... down... they can immediately take me off of their search results... or at least bump me down. Giving their search customers a bad/slow/broken site reflects on Google... so they do everything they can to ensure that doesn't happen.

      Want to be higher ranked with Google (or any search engine)? Make sure you have a rock-solid host who is not only up... but has low latency. Search engines don't impact your business and isn't your target market anyway? BS. Google's index directly or indirectly affects any business that operates online wether they want to believe it or not.

      How can you test your site?
      Run this report: GTmetrix | Website Speed and Performance Optimization
      Run this report too: The W3C Markup Validation Service
      Then check speed with this: Website speed test
      Then finally see how many other people are hosted on your IP with this: Reverse IP Lookup - Find Other Web Sites Hosted on a Web Server

    Their prices are more than reasonable plus customer support is solid.

      Everything (just as in so many other hosting companies taken over by EIG).

      Down-time is up, or up-time is down, if you prefer to look at it that way.

      The waiting time for support/help is ridiculous.

      The company's general attitude toward customer service seems to have been transformed, for the worse.

      (I must admit that until about 6 months ago, I'd also had no issues with it, and was wondering why so many people here were complaining about it so regularly. I was kind of in exactly the position you're in now, Rob, in other words. But there are now apparently fewer and fewer people left in that position! It's only when "something goes wrong" that you find out what a hosting company's really like).

        Their support went from amazing and industry leading to crazy slow and (as their techs admit) over worked and under staffed support lines with a huge queue of tickets and customers waiting.

        I believe the old HG owner went over to run Site5, but that could have been a temporary thing.

        So Site5 is good, along with Arvixe (they also allow adult content if that's your thing) as well as the following:

        Hawkhost
        Stablehost
        Mddhost
        Veerotech

        ...and a few others I can't think of right now. But I've used and/or still have accounts with these hosts I've just mentioned and support, speed, stability etc is all there.

        For larger sites/higher traffic needs I've heard good things about:

        knownhost
        bigscoots
        beyondhosting
        mediatemple
        wiredtree
        liquidweb

        I personally like a host where i can grow within them rather than needing to migrate to a more robust company when the time comes.

        Even if some reportedly good EIG hosts were mentioned do you really want to be back in the same mess you're dealing with now?

        EIG tends to use the same data centers for several of their hosting brands. So when you try to switch hosts, let's say hostgator to bluehost, you're not actually moving away from the problem at all.

        Just stick to your guns on not settling for an EIG host.

    I moved from HostGator because of a number of problems and when they supplied the final back-up files for transfer there were a huge number of files missing so do a really thorough check before you finally close your account.

    I moved to Hostwinds and they seem fine so far.

    Traffic planet hosting, interserver.net are all good, stay away from Wp Engine, costs a lot and no value for the money it charges you.

    First off... good on you for staying away from EIG.

    I personally love CrocWeb, I love ReliableHostingSolutions, VPSAce, etc. etc. etc. But the market is ALWAYS changing and new/better/cheaper hosts are always coming into play.

    Unless you need a specific cloud hosting solution for a large site (you should be using AWS, Rackspace, or something similar for this anyway) then you'd be best to just visit these 2 sources listed below to get the best idea of the best host AT ANY GIVEN TIME (because like I said... the best changes from day-to-day... literally). Now that isnt to say you should switch often (I've been with my current host for 2 years and been in the "web" game since 1998). But you should keep your eye on the pulse of the web hosting community to see what advancements are made and what offerings there are.

    For instance... I run a site that gets 4-6 million hits A DAY. I learned about reverse proxies, nginx, and VPSes (back before they were 'mainstream') and thus saved myself THOUSANDS in hosting costs per year. It isn't that the old host who I used who DIDN'T have these things was bad... it just means as a business owner whose business is online with sites making millions of hits a day... its my job to stay informed in whats going on.

    Two sources to always look at when looking for new hosting providers (specifically VPSes):
    Low End Box - Cheap VPS Hosting Providers Listing & Reviews and LowEndTalk (basically same site)

    I think interserver dot net is the best. Just try for their first month $0,01 hosting for VPS or $0,1 for webhost if i've not mistaken for the price. You can check their service is suitable with your needs or not. Just go with some coupon to get those price.

    My picks after reading up on non-EIG hosts a lot.

    Shared/Reseller hosting:
    Hostwinds
    Siteground
    Stablehost
    Crocweb (Canadian so I noticed higher ping times from S. Florida than others)
    Site5 (no longer recommended, they were bought by EIG in Aug 2015)

    VPS:
    WiredTree (Incredible company, used their VPS in the past)
    LiquidWeb (Another great company, but they don't "level up" like WiredTree)
