Hi, guys! I am afraid I bought this software and the moment I downloaded, two of my AV programmes squeaked murder. I contacted the vendor but they assured me that "many people have used it and it is a false positive".

Well, an online scan shows that too many AV engines have found this positive - I mean, too many for comfort:

online scan

Can you recommend other virus scans engines, or do you have experience with this (rather old, I know) software?

I am not disclosing the name of the vendor on purpose; I will definitely get unsubscribed from their lists, though.

I own a different ecover suite so I can't comment specifically on that one. With that being said...

VirusTotal is a reputable scanning service, no doubt about that. Depending on what it was built with I suppose they could all be false positives, but if I could not obtain a cleaner file I doubt if I would risk it personally.

I can tell you a recent/current software software giveaway in the War Room throws a similar report on VirusTotal (12/54) and the owner has claimed on a now deleted thread that they are all ubot driven false positives.

Since the software has been around for a relatively long period of time you would think the vendor or developer would have taken the time to submit the files to the antivirus companies (at least Symantec, McAfee, and Comodo by now) to have the software tested/exempted and the definitions updated if possible.

    Cheers

Thank you, ForumGuru, you are always a great help! My gut feeling is, ditch the software and the list; there are too many red flags for comfort.

I must say I was tempted by the cheap price so it seemed to be a fair gamble. But a trojan, that I never batgained for!

Maybe there should be a black list somewhere on this forum. There shouldn't be list owners who offer old stuff (brand new Wordpress course from 2005), or unsupported software (TurboVideojenie aka AutoVideoCreator), or trojan-loaded packages. Ah well, kvetch off...
