Wordpress Website; How Do I Get Started?

PLEASE HELP...

Hi, I have a few HTML websites which I built myself; they're not pretty but they're doing ok. I want to start building websites based in Wordpress since everybody seems to agree that they are very good looking, easy to create and have all kinds of plug-ins.

The problem is, every time I try to do it I get stuck very fast in the early stages.

If anybody can recommend a very basic, easy to read free guide to wordpress I will really appreciate it...

Another thing; I'm thinking about changing all my ugly sites to wordpress... They're doing good on Google, some of them are in first and second page of Google for some tags....

If I convert them to Wordpress will this affect my Google rankings? Please HELP...

About googlr rankings, well definitely yes because you are going to use new links... you need to repost your contents on wordpress pages...

let me know which part you need support..

      Thanks Solidsnake,

One last question; why would I be using new links? Couldn't I just use the same links I'm using now?

But if I'm going to lose some rankings I think I'd better keep these HTML pages and maybe I outsource some nice looking HEADER for those sites...

      Tanks though...

    Hi DJBory,

If you are moving to a WordPress Platform, one thing you could do is modify your static HTML pages to do a 301 redirect to the new WordPress pages. This means that you won't lose any traffic.

    Cheers,
    Suzanne

      Thanks Suzanne,

Maybe I will not lose traffic, but I heard I could lose some Google rankins doing that... What do you think?

with your existing sites you can use 301 directs, or edit your ht access file or use a plugin to take care of this. Make sure you set up the same url ie http://www.domain.com or http://domain.com. You can also use the enforce preference plugin to do that for you so you don't need to worry about "www" or not. Just check all your links first on something like link checker before you move, copy all the urls, fix any broken links and then use any of the methods above.

You can find a ton of free tutorials on WP on WP TV or on You Tube.

    Hope that helps

I see what I can do... I don't know how to use 301 directs or edit my ht access... I'm not a very techi person, I designed my own sites because with Kompozer is very easy... I will Google 301 redirects to see what I find...

Thanks so much for mentioning WordPress tv - I have been searching for a WP tutorial that I can follow without getting totally lost. I'm a dab hand at TypePad blogs - but WP still baffles me.

I'm off to check out WP tv right now.

I've been moving all of my websites over to WordPress for some months now. The key to not losing your current presence on Google etc. is to ensure that all pages currently listed in any of the search engines have a 301 redirect to the new WP url for the relevant content, as stated earlier. The easy way to do this, I know I do it all the time, takes 3 steps:

    1. Download and install the redirection plugin (link below) then activate it.
    2. Check for current page listings is Google etc. like so:
go to google and in the search box type your url prefixed by 'site:' e.g. 'site:www.yoursite.com'
google will list all your pages in their index.
Do the same for MSN (Bing). For Yahoo go to yahoo site explorer http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ you will get your list of pages in yahoo and also a list of inbound links to your site.
    3. Using these lists type each old url into the redirection plugin page and give it the new url in wordpress. Make sure the redirect type is 301 permanent, it is the default setting.

Any inbound links will also follow your redirect, but it's not a bad idea over time to use the inbound link list from yahoo to update your links.

It's actually easier to do than it is to explain here :-)

    I hope this helps

PS redirection can take care of the canonicals as well, i.e. http://www.website or http://website

Redirection plugin by John Godley, you can get it here Redirection - Manage 301 redirections without modifying Apache | Urban Giraffe.

I have been learning how to do all the technical stuff with free videos. I find there is a youtube video "how to" for just about anything you care to learn. Just use the search box on youtube. I just learned how to build an opt in box and install it from a youtube video.
