Menus on left or on right

Hello Warriors,

I am in a predicament.

I like my menus on the left hand side of a website but most wordpress seem to have them on the right.

What do you think is best\?

    Danny,

Are you setting up a website or a wordpress?

I like my menu on the left side on my website!
and I will, if I ever set up a wordpress, set up my menu on the left side too!

"What do you think is best?" is really a personal question!
Some people will prefer the left side and say it is best for them. And some prefer the menu on the right side and claim it is the best!

Therefore, the only way to find out is really doing a test yourself, in terms of how long the visitors stay on the page, and how many click on the different menu link! But that require lots of work too!

Again, it is really a personal preference! I hope you find yours!

There is a strong SEO reason for placing your main content
in the left column and everything else in the right column.

If you want your pages to rank higher in google you need
to place your keywords as early as possible in the source
code of your pages. That is called 'keyword prominency'.

The ideal source code order is following:

      header code
      main content code
      columns with menus etc
      footer code

Search engine spiders read the code from the top of the page
downwards and from left to right.

Your goal is to have as little code as possible above your main
      textual content.

That's why you want your text containing keywords to be read
by spiders right after the header code.
If the sidebar is placed before the main text, the spider needs to
read all the way down the sidebar before it comes to your
      keywords.

There are some special table layouts that allow you to have both
left and right sidebar while still forcing the spider to read the main
      text content first.

You can understand this special layout if you study the source code
of sites generated by XSitePro for example.

Anyway, from SEO point of view it's much better to have your
      sidebar on the right side.

If your Wordpress theme (or you) use CSS correctly you can have the sidebar on the left whilst the content on the right is read first by the search engine.

Accordingly the visual layout does not have to be a driver for any decisions you are taking to 'please' the search engines if you follow the logic above.

Your layout decision therefore should be driven by your customer goals.

Website heat spots published many times on the Internet show that the real life customer ( not the software robot) will see the header and left hand side items first.

You need to decide whether it is to your advantage that: -

        1. the visitor sees your navigation menu first, and can navigate to what they are looking for quickly ... leaving the page they landed on

        2. or that they do not see the navigation menu in their eyeline and they will have more chance of reading your words on the page they landed upon.

All depends upon the source of the traffic and what you are trying to do.

    Danny,

So it is a blog, then according to Alminc, you should get the menu to the right, for the SEO purpose and traffic! And not letting your struggle to find the theme!

Guess you already decided where to put!
