What Do You Use To Record Video?

Hello all,

Just curious what services you are using to record videos, namely screen recordings. My computer, low and behold, did not come with a screen recording software. After much digging, I started to use Screencast-O-Matic, which actually works really well. To unlock the full features I paid something like $10 for the year, well worth it.

I'm always looking out for new things, so wondering what anyone else has found to work really well.

    Camtasia Studio 8 is great.

It can record the screen and import it onto your timeline immediately for editing.

I record screencasts with Kdenlive and Audacity.

I tried most of the screencasting software available for Linux, but nothing really worked well for me, except for VLC and Kdenlive. I guess it would be nice to just have a simple screencasting program that handled everything, but the way I'm doing it is working really well. Audacity has decent post-production noise removal, and Kdenlive let's me capture a screen region that's the correct dimensions for a YouTube video.

  • I'm using Screenflow. But this week I'm starting work on a new info product and I have discovered that my Keynote (Mac version of Powerpoint) has a recording function and what's cool about it is I can read my script while recording but it will not record the script. I test it last week on a few slides and it came out fantastic so today I start writing the script and then recording if it works out I'll do all my slide videos with it and only use Screenflow for the demo videos.

Quicktime Player on a Mac works like MAGIC. I was doing a training program that insisted I needed to by Screenflow, but after already spending a bit on KeyNote and LeadPages and all the other things I needed to get going, I tried to find a cheap solution. And I found that you can use the Quicktime player to do this. Just go to the top menu, drop it down, and pick 'new screen recording.' You might have to go into the settings to get the right microphone for voice in (and you might want to get a $30 clip-on mic for better results), but once you get it set up, it's a breeze. Might not be the best if you want to stop and start or need to edit a lot, but if you can mange in one take or can go back in with MovieMaker, it's a great FREE option.

I agree with you, Screencast-O-Matic is a good tool. But as for me, I prefer using free application. Recently, I found a free online screen recorder which even supports screen editing during recording. That’s really interesting. If you want to have a try, you can access this recorder here. BTW, I downloaded the desktop version which is more convenient to run.

  • I use Debut Screen Recorder or Screen-O-Matic for screen recording.

I use EasySketchPro for animated videos

And use Movie Maker for editing

For my Mac I am using screenflow but I do have Camtasia for Mac (prefer screenflow).
For windows, camtasia 7 (yes I know old version but I don't have a newer PC, just an old one)
    Canon T5i with a Sigma 18 - 35 MM lens (on camera)
iPhone 5S - If I don't have the Canon with me
iPad 3 - UsingX-Mirage to capture the iPad for recording

    Just as important, Audio
Blue Snowball with a pop filter
Zoom H4N (use it for both screen capture and with the Canon)
Sennheiser G3 Wireless Lapel (for use with Canon)
Shure VP83 Lens Hopper for when I can't or don't want to use the lapel mic

    Miscellaneous
I have Explaindio (and easy VSL)and have yet to really dig down deep. Really trying to do more on screen as ultimately, makes a better connection with the viewer.

Camtasia Studio is the best. I used Screenr and Screencast-O-Matic before, it's good too but you can't edit your videos as much as Camtasia Studio allows you.

I think camtasia is great for these type of recordings, works for mac and windows. If you using mac, quick time player also has a screen recording function from the file menu but you will have to edit in other application.

You can download ScreenCapStudio (free). Camtasia Studio is worth the investment. And for animated video go for videomakerfx or explaidio and for whiteboard videos go for easyskectchpro.
