I Can't Define My Target Audience... HELP!

I blog every here and there about leadership principles and development. Earlier today I was thinking about writing a semi-short ebook for Amazon Kindle, or creating a 3-6 video module course to sell when I realized - I don't know who the hell my target audience/market/prospect is.

I don't want to cast the net too wide because that will dilute whatever message I want to deliver.

So maybe you guys help not only me but many others who might come across this thread. How do I find my target prospect/market/audience? Once I have that figured out, how can I find the common questions, concerns, and pains they have?

One way to figure out who they are and what questions / concerns they have is to hang out in forums / facebook groups where they are hanging.

In your case you would look at the broad niche "leadership" , find some forums / facebook / linkedin groups and interact there and find out what they want.

if you have a facebook account, you can get very clear demographics on who they are by using their advertising tool and searching for your keywords.

No wonder you're having trouble finding a target audience. Leadership principles and development is a pretty wide net to cast. What type of leadership principles and development? For who?

"You" should decide your target audience. For example, what hasn't been covered or covered that much, or covered for a particular group? You'll have to add a special twist or angle. Because you're covering one of the most written topics in history.

You'll have to drill down and narrow your scope much more than that. Otherwise you're competing with tons of free information already on leadership principles and development, just Google it, when I did I got 256,000,000 results.

You've got to be more specific. Leadership and development principles for ..... _____________.

The good news? You haven't written the book yet, so you have a chance to do it the right way. Many people look for the target market after they've written the book, so you're ahead of the game.

It seems like you blindingly know your target audience. If you know how many modules your video course is going to be then you have an idea of what the content is for those videos. The niche man is right too your target market is too broad so narrow it down.
To do that discover the pain you are fixing with your video course and you will work your way backwards to your target audience.

    Hope this helped

You don't create a product then look for the target audience.

You define the audience you want to target then create a
    product that speaks to them.

    Hi Marty

Many businesses find this to be a challenge and you're not the first one. It's a serious challenge when you're not trained to think differently about your business. Very few if any businesses do the core work before they start their businesses. So, here are a couple of foundational core ideas to consider if you're looking to define your target audience:

    1. You have to define what business you're "really" in. You have to think through this question from the consumer / prospects point of view. How do you want them to view what you do vs. how do they really view what you do.

    2. What problems do you "really" solve. If you know your products and services then you have worked backwards. We have to understand what problems your audience needs solved and why should they use you to solve them? This is the core question. What I don't allow my clients to do is tell me what they do. No one cares! In this area you have to learn to think like the consumer.

    3. Once you know the "real" problems you solve, you can identify who you solve them for. You are ready to drill down and define the specific audiences. When done right, the average business may have dozens or even hundreds of specific target audiences.

    4. How do your products or services become a part of the solution. This is where you develop your prospect / customer specific messaging and you talk with them about their problems / issues, not yourself.

Marty, I hope this helps some. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of work and sometimes time to define your taraget audience. You may need someone who can help guide you in this area. If I can help, please let me know.

I hope you have an awesome week!

@Don, I wish I could thank you more. This is the best response to this thread so far, and the most helpful answer I've gotten on this forum.

@The Niche Man, thanks dude! I have a slight idea of my audience now, but I'm working on getting clear on it.

Leadership principles and development is definitely a wide net. In my experience, whenever I've written a book (I have written 4 so far), I have first conducted research as to which demographic is lacking info. For example "Weight loss" is a wide niche. If you drill that down to "Weight loss in women over 40", it becomes narrow, but again there are many books that target this age group. So if you drill down further and target "weight loss for vegans/vegetarians", perhaps you'll find demographics who would be really interested in your book.

As soon as you define your target audience, you'll be able to focus on writing content easily, as you will always have them in mind.
