23 replies
Do you set goals for your business? SMART goals are the best way to create these goals.

I was reading some statistics last week, which showed how companies who create goals for their business, it showed how the bottom line of the business increased by:-

10% No

20% No

100% No

Guess how much?

900% Yes, you can increase your bottom line by 900% if you create goals for your business.

Now find reasons why you can't do it

    Yes, goal setting is great, I am from the old school of writing them out in long hand every day to seat them in my mind. Thanks, Ed

    I love setting goal's for myself but more importantly completing them.

    The only problem i have is completing the goals in a reasonable time frame! Ive tried setting a time limit but i know that time limit can be pushed further back so never keep to it.

      How about setting up a contingency plan just in case you missed your deadline. There are external factors which we may not be aware of or even non-existent when the goals were formulated. Back up is always good.

      • Yes, I really agree that goal setting makes all the difference between success and failure. I see what out friend above means about time frame, it's totally normal something unexpected and important to come up during our day and interrupt the timeline we had planned. When that happens I try to check what I fell behind on and I do this during within my free time, that works pretty well for me whether in the workplace, studies or home.
        It's also important to plan your day previously one before, doing so you can write down your tasks for the next day as they come to your mind.

    Bev,

    You gave me some killer advice last year.

    I'm now smart enough to take it. At least the first lesson.

    Baby steps. Think like a business.

    Thanks,

    That's great information. When I set concrete goals my achievement level increases significantly; I just have to become more consistent at setting them.

    If you think you have pressures you will.

    f you think you are busy, you are.

    People frequently ask me how I manage to get through such, what they regard as a super-human workload, while being single parent of three boys for 14 years.

    I tell them that I never think in those terms. And I never feel busy or pressured and always have all the time I need to enjoy myself with my sons.

    There is only One Moment - Now - nothing else matters.

    Here is a poem which might help few people - it is so true:

    If you think you are beaten, you are.
    If you think you dare not, you won't.
    If you like to win, but don't think you can,
    It's almost a cinch that you won't.
    If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
    For out in the world you'll find
    Success begins with a fellow's will;
    It's all in a state of mind.
    For many a game is lost
    Ere even a play is run,
    And many a coward fails
    Ere even his work is begun.
    Think big and your deeds will grow;
    Think small and you'll fall behind;
    Think that you can and you will;
    It's all in a state of mind.
    If you think you're out-classed, you are;
    You've got to think high to rise.
    You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize.
    Life's battle don't always go
    To the stronger or faster man,
    But sooner or later, the man who wins
    Is the fellow who thinks he can!

    Hey

    Thanks for the useful advice. Goal setting has always played a big role in my life. I print out all my goals, including what I am expected to achieve when I'm 50! Anyway I stick the goals list in front of my desk so I will always be reminded to work on them no matter what. Helps reduce procrastination as well.

    Another tip is, set a deadline for the goal. Sometimes, achieving a goal seems so easy, we just procrastinate and start one week before the actual deadline, only to fail that goal. Setting a deadline gives me a sense of urgency and hey, isn't this 'deadline' tactic used in sales letters as well? If you use it in your sales letters, use the same tactic on yourself as well. Hope this helps

    Thanks for the poem acpc, I enjoyed it!

    The poem touches a concept close to my heart - see, I read the book by Dale Carnegie (How to Stop Worrying and Start Living) and absolutely believed that it is one of THE BEST books on Earth for human emotions. It talks about how your mind is the ONLY factor that makes you feel how you feel, which is true, if you think about it.

    Now I can talk a lot on this topic but I guess that will be going off topic here. However I do believe that yes, you can have the knowledge of all these, goal-setting being the topic being discussed here. And yes, we all know the benefits of goal setting (regardless of how many % profits you get in return) but the real reason why people do not do it?

    Lack of self-discipline.
    Fear of failure.

    This two are probably the largest reasons why people do not do it.

    Also, there is no point if a person can set goals but has no follow-up actions to accomplish them.

    Which brings up the question for me...: Which comes first? Goal setting or action planning?

    Yeah, it really does make a huge difference.

    I use the SMART strategy to create goals
    no matter how large or small.

    S stands for Specific - goal must be explicit and precise

    M stands for Measurable - such as a certain amount of money

    A stands for Achievable - do I believe I can do it and do I have proof

    R stands for Relevant - what need does it satisfy?

    T stands for Time-based - give specific date it will be accomplished

      I like this... one thing missing though, which should be tacked right onto the end of this:

      S.M.A.R.T. STRATEGY

      Without a strategy, you are far less likely to achieve your goals than if you were to have had one.

      In that strategy, address FEAR somewhere. Fear undermines any goal having to do with learning or progression. It sits on the path to almost any significant goal.

      Let's say the thought of giving a presentation is surrounded by fear. There is no physical danger, but your brain does not know that. So when the response to fear arrives, it's time to get closer to it.

      Asking yourself, "how close can I get to my goal before the onset of fear arrives and takes over" is a very relevant step in overcoming fear.

      And then, "can I stay at that point long enough for my brain to sort out that there really isn't any real danger?"

      Over a very short time, you'll be closer and closer to your goal before the onset of fear arrives. You'll be able to stay closer to it long enough to eventually neutralize the effect of fear, effectively sorting out in your brain what is not genuinely dangerous to the point where you can really start taking constructive action toward your goals.

      To begin this process, start by just doing something that moves you toward your goals and identify when your brain tries to come to your rescue by exerting fear.

      Sort this out on the way (strategy to arrive at) your goals, and it'll be smooth sailing.

    Goal setting makes a huge difference to your success. Plus, there is virtually no wrong way to do it. Just by setting the goal (preferably on paper, but not necessarily) you increase the odds in your favor...

    Even if you don't do anything else, you will almost always get more than if you never formulate a goal.

    All the best,
    Michael

    Goal setting is a bunch of cr@P. Useless waste of time.

    Unless

    You also set objectives and figure out strategies on how to reach your goals. By themselves goals won't do diddley.

      i believe realistic goals can improve performance dramatically, but i also think that setting unrealistic goals can also have the adverse effect. I think you actually have to think you have the ability to achieve your goals.. otherwise its a waste of time.

    Hey !!

    Good post, excellent advice !

    I was taught by my mentor you must plan. I admit sometimes I go on without planning but when you assess what you achieved you soon realise that without your plan you dont get done what you need / want to.

    Write a plan.. BUT WORK THE PLAN !

    I personally also find that by working to a plan not only do you know exactly what needs to be done but when you complete tasks on your plan you feel good about it as you feel you are getting somewhere !!

    Great advice Bev

      I have my goal posted on the sidebar widget on my desktop as a note so I see it everyday when I start up my computer.

      I started my first real campaign yesterday and I set a goal of making $50/day by July 31. I am going to work full time (40 or more hours) a week and hopefully create at least 4 niches. I believe it is do-able but what do you guys think?
