Stupid Newbie Question re: email newsltr.

It just occurred to me that there should be a "stupid newbie question" thread/forum.

When writing emails for my AR how do I get the URL to be "hot" where a customer simply clicks on the URL and goes to the site?

I use Open Office and followed their "help" and got so that customer can use cntrl and click but that's an extra step I don't want customers to take. I'm sure the answer's simple, but I haven't found it yet.

    Hi Rich2,

    1. Are you going to send them an open office doc as an attachment?

If so, most people would use the open office built-in function to convert it to pdf first.

    2. I would guess that you're not doing that (1), and you want to put the link directly in the email?

Most decent autoresponders/receiving email clients will automatically make it a live link as long as it's a properly formatted URL.

Otherwise you use a normal html hyperlink with anchor text.

Instructions for specific autoresponders will be provided in the help files. Openoffice shouldn't really be in the equation at all.

Sidenote - if you're writing your emails in openoffice and then copy/pasting into an email, be careful. It might contain strange code from the document. Much safer to use notepad or another similar text editor.

Create a dummy newsletter account, sign up for it yourself and test every email by broadcasting it to the list (IE you) to check for errors before sending it to your real subscribers on your real list.

Thanks for Getting Back to Me So Fast!

I'm just setting up the AR now and attempted to sign up on my site to see if it did automatically convert to a "hot" link. AR didn't send the emai; Maybe because I have it set on single opt-in. I'll go to double and see if that's the fix.

I was looking at "Edit Pad" which is free for non-commercial. I guess that wouldn't be cheating until I make some $ Do you recommend any other text editors? Mozilla said "sea-monkey" will do it. Haven't tried it yet.

      Appreciate your time.

Iam not a newbie but maybe compared to some here am still wet behind the ears. I apologize for asking this question on someone elses Thread but didnt want to start a brand new one. It is something I should know and for some reason I am having a brain fart over it.

So I have Getresponse so how do I convert this to a live linked URL on my getresponse auto responder without the anchor text 'Click Here ' ??
        <a href="http://594f5bnrnppe5le2r8mk8q2sav.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=LOSEWEIGHTLOOKHOT" target="_top">Click Here!</a>

        Thnx

        Hi Rich2,

What's the name of your autoresponder - GetResponse? Is it self hosted (on your hosting) or 3rd party (like GetResponse)?

Single/double opt in shouldn't affect that at all. It doesn't always send immediately, it gets queued. And if it's GetResponse, they're undergoing a revamp for two days.

Do you have Windows on your PC? If so then you should have notepad and wordpad under start>accessories.

          Hi Discrat,

I haven't used an autoresponder 'in anger' for quite a while now. From memory, you just slap the link in - http*//domain.com

If it's a nasty long obvious affiliate link that most people would cloak it into a nice url like http*//domain.com/product with a link redirect.

          (swap * for : )

I *think* Aweber cloaks them into aweber links anyway.

            Thanks Rat !!
Though one point you make I might disagee on. The long obvious afiliate Link is not really an issue with potential customers outside MMO Niche. They dont know the difference. They are just ready to look at their solution to Acne or weight loss and most of the time could care less.

Might they be concerned to click on it, if they have ever clicked on a long 'funny' looking link in an email only to find out that it was a spam email? Are they more likely to trust http*//domain.com/niceword

Using Smart AR with "listpro" (haven't activated the co-reg ad yet but I see the neg reviews on LP) Says 0 in que. Says sent 4 which would be correct if it sent it.

          Running XP.
Don't have active MS Word. Could use trial but I don't intend to buy it so I'd like to find permanent solution.

I do have Wordpad and notepad but still no hyperlink when I type URL.
          Still stumped.

So you haven't received it? Checked spam filter/spam score of email text?

I don't know that AR. Is it self hosted or not?

I do have Wordpad and notepad but still no hyperlink when I type URL
No hyperlink in those text editors? You're not supposed to - as I explained -

Or do you mean no hyperlink when you receive the email?

            Can you clarify please.

If you're relying on autolinks, don't, use "Insert Hyperlink" 5th one down on the "Insert" menu. Will work nicely if you save as HTML or PDF.

I don't recommend OpenOffice for marketing emails unless you're sending as PDF attachments.

      Thanks for everybody's input.

It's great to know that no matter how inane the question might be there is always a Warrior to lend a helping hand(S).

Update: AR is working. Roadrunner must have filtered this confirmation to "spam folder" even though I have no filters set up. Got it to go through to gmail. Apparently no subj in confirmation e-mail. Sent "ticket" to help desk.

Last thought; do any AR services have LIVE help desks? I host on hostgator just for that reason. Nice to talk to a human in reasonable amount of time. Does any AR service do the same? Love it if it was Warrior based.
