I read it a little differently than that.
"MICHAEL JACKSON PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE com Domain Name MichaelJacksonPublicMemorialService.Com Amazing MJ Item number: 260442297692 ![]() ![]() Buyer or seller of this item? Sign in for your status ![]() This item has ended with Buy it Now."The other thing I've been thinking about as I was reading this thread is what about the long term money making opportunities spawned by the death of Elvis Presley? It seems to me that Michael Jackson would be at least a close second. |

As far as I can tell, eBay yanked the auction before it completed... not surprised!
While I'm not sure what happened, it wouldn't surprise me if they got a call from one of the Jacksons' lawyers and poof... it no longer exists. |

Michael Jackson was worth many billions worldwide.
He's a walking religion. Artists' work always generate MORE money AFTER death. Publishers & Stores are STILL selling elvis and beatles records. 21 million is a drop in the bucket for what that domain could be used for. Get your head away from the dollar amount (its just numbers on a page) and think about what you can do with that name. So long as one has the legal rights to use the name in a business transaction (such as a reseller), then its a shoe-in. |

MICHAEL JACKSON PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE com Domain Name - eBay (item 260442297692 end time Jul-06-09 23:04:41 PDT)
It sold - this is it. Ended with buy it now. The auction ended and was relisted and sold http://completed.shop.ebay.com/merch...Q2em283?_rdc=1 Take a look at her completed listings Although I couldn't imagine why anyone would pay $21,000,000 for a domain - especially if it is possibly Trademarked |

That indicates the auction ended with "Sold". Is there proof that it was a valid transaction? I was under the impression that it was not unheard of for people to "buy" eBay auctions to take them off the market. People have bought stranger things but 21M for that domain name doesn't make sense to me.

You're right it doesn't make sense, that's an awful lot of money. True it only shows that it was sold, there is no way to know if the seller actually received payment for it. That's a CRAZY amount of money to pay.

I wouldn't be surprised if the person selling that horrible domain bought it from themselves with another account, forgetting that you'll have to pay crazy ebay fees on that "sale" haha

Trust me, I brokered REAL premium domains for years and this one is worth nothing and is a farce, just watch these end with no bids if you want some comparisons:
MICHEAL JACKSON PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE COM DOMAIN NAME - eBay (item 170355140786 end time Jul-10-09 20:37:33 PDT) MICHAEL JACKSON PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE DOMAIN NAME - eBay (item 140331701979 end time Jul-13-09 17:49:11 PDT) Michael Jackson Public Memorial Service.com domain name - eBay (item 230355325050 end time Jul-15-09 07:04:08 PDT) |

Hi Lou,
I saw people posting here regarding it, and I thought I would sign up to answer any questions about it. (There are many forums discussing it) and I thought the question posed here was an interesting one. |

Here is one quote I recieved from someone regarding it:
"Hi! I think you could do a great thing with this, this has a chance to turn into something positive that will allow people to remember MJ in their own way for all time! The people that sell t-shirts, posters, keychains you name it, there isnt anything positive that will ever come of that other then lining their pockets, I already added the name to my favorites!" |

People seem to be stuck on the 21 million dollar price and over look the best offer feature , but many do not understand that price was just to enhance the search results

Here is one more quote that we thought was very nice as well:
"I wasnt able to get tickets to the event, and I love Michael! I see this as turning into a giant worldwide tribute that everyone can sign and view like the MJ sign they had out front but for all of us. Thank you so much and good luck!" |

GJC - have you received payment for the domain? It's not really sold until you've got the cash - so just wondering if you have received the money or if it is possible someone clicked that buyitnow button with no intention of paying.
Second question for you - aren't you concerned that this domain name may be in violation of the Trademarked name of Michael Jackson? |

Hi Sheryl,
The trademark thing was an interesting one that we never even realized, after a call to a TM attorney they said (could be right or could be wrong) that this was a public event and since it was billed as a public event for the world to view it didnt fall within the typical trademark category. Ah the money I hate discussing it but to answer your question we are not sure yet but we have been in communication with the company |

Well it's funny because I started a meaningful thread about marketing / profiting on someone's death and it got deleted by someone.

No way is it real, but I guess Michael Jackson has taken over the internet since a week ago. (182 million search results)
For some perspective...that's 100 million more results than Barack Obama. Yes, MJ is now bigger than Obama. |

If anyone purchased the domains for over 6 figures they are crazy. Michael Jackson of course has a trademark on his name so if you are using it to profit from his name then it is in violation of the international copyrights and trademark law which means you will be shut down. I don't see any real angle other then a fan-site which won't make you your money back anytime soon.

I would imagine the $21 million BIN is just to get attention for a draaaaaaasticly lower selling price.
Then again, that would make a little bit of sense. Who knows what the real story is. |
