Having a clean theme is a good start ( error free code)

    >ensure images and videos are compressed,
    >plugins will slow your webpage speed down only have the essentials
    >ensure you have good quality hosting

this is the basics and a good place to start, hope it helps

The webpage speeds is influenced by your hosting, by the theme you use, by how many GB space you have, if it is too crowded it will work slower. And ultimately by your Internet connection. Make a speed test and see what speed do you have.

It will depend on the content you have on your website, and how many scripts you use, and where are the scripts, header or footer. Also, a big step is the size of the images, you should have each image optimized for less loading time.

If the problem is so bad that you are coming here to ask about it, I'd probably look at the host first.

Use as low as amount of plugins. Use a Cache plugin like W3tc Cache, Super Cache etc. Optimize your images. Use a CDN like Max CDN, Cloudflare etc if possible. These steps will help you to increase your website performance.

Use https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ to get insight on what you need to fix and the I would suggest getting WP Total Cache not Super Cache and getting rid of most errors. You can realistically get up to 91 for Desktop and mobile as well (Maybe a little less with mobile).

If you are on shared hosting, I would first start with caching as any queries to the database are usually a huge bottleneck.

Wordpress themes that are not optimized properly also tend to slow down sites dramatically especially when they make a ton of HTTPrequests.

If possible, use a CDN to store your javascript, css and image files. Amazon CloudFront is super cheap.

Compress your site, cut any extra code that is needed. Also adding a vps or dedicated server with litespeed or nginx can also help boost performance if your site gets a lot of traffic. These are just a few suggestions but there are numerous other things you can do. Check out gtmetrix it will help you get a better understanding of your sites performance and what needs to be optimized.

I'd remove any excessive images and or php or java scripts that you don't need. Typically these are loaded before tge website themselves thus slowing down web page load times. Go and have a spring clean!

If your using wordpress, Use these plugins:
    1) WP Super Cache
    2) WP Smush It (re-sizing images)
    3) WP Optimize
    4) Lazy Load

Then don't use Gravatar on your websites. You can use CDN services like MaxCDN or cloudflare to host your wordpress. Try use simple but powerful theme like genesis, thrivethemes and thesis.

A lot of replies are assuming WordPress can you confirm what platform your site is running on?

A great site that monitors website performance is GT metrix - GTmetrix | Website Speed and Performance Optimization this will show the yslow and pagespeed scores for your website and give recommendations on how to speed it up.

Caching is often a real good performance win.

One common issues is image size - make sure all images are optimized for the web and you are not uploading high res images straight from a 10MP camera.

If all website issues are addressed then moving to better hosting/dedicated hosting would be the next place to look and you could even consider load balancing if you get a lot of traffic.

I`v try all the cache plugin on wordpress and Hypercache extended (for shared hosting like most peoples have) is the fastest and the most simple to deal with.

Try deleting all your unused plugins! When you are getting tons of traffic your website will get stuck.

Try ro keep the amounts of plugins as low as possible and just use the ones that are totally necessary.

Use cache, try to uninstall and delete all unwanted plugins, have a good theme that has less scope of design and more scope on SEO.

  • Here are the main 3 things I do:

    - Install w3 Total Cache Plugin (Wordpress)
    - Install WP Smush It for image optimization
    - I also use a CDN (Content Deliver Network) and I use MaxCDN.

The CDN is the slightly more advanced option but it does wonders for your Page Speed!

    I recommend it!

If you use videos, don't upload them to your site, on your own hosting. Use YouTube and one of the many plugins that are available (like VooPlayer) to display the video.

Having a lot of videos or even audios uploaded to your host, and playing right from your website will slow it down badly.
