Hey guys, I have a few questions for those that have purchased websites in the past. We found a website that is for sale that ranks number one for many of the keywords that are valuable to our business. The site has been around since 1992. It is a 'how-to' type of site. We sell the products to make the 'how-to' it happen (= tons of pre-written content). Win-win right? Here's the kicker. The site is not monetized and has not been monetized since its creation. More of a hobby for the owner- not a money maker. How do you make an offer? The guy has thousands of hours into it... but has no way of knowing what it is worth. Do you just throw an offer out there? Are there resources out there to tell what specific keywords are worth compared to placement in Google? Any suggestions? Thanks!! |

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal Select the country your targeting and enter the keywords into the keyword box. Use 'filter results' if you only want results for your exact keywords. Select 'show estimated avg CPC' in the show/hide columns drop down menu.

Good call... a quick check with one of the keywords and it is showing over 195K searches in May, global is close to 300K. Average CPC of .74. Time to wheel and deal. I may be wrong, but this looks like a steal if under 1K right? |

You mentioned that it is already for sale. Does the seller have an asking price? If not get in contact with him and see where he sees the value to begin with.

It is worth what the market is willing to pay for it. Nothing more, nothing less. What it is 'worth' it to him may not be 'worth it' to me. With that said, I chatted with him a bit and he isn't interested in making a lot of $$ from the sale (some... but not a lot), but would rather have someone keep it going as he is getting older and not having time to give it the attention it needs. Seems like a good fit. Gets me thinking... why spend hours and hours creating something from scratch when you can just ask site owners if they would be willing to sell...

Ask the owner of the site for his price. To you, the site may be worth $10,000, but he may only want $1,000. He may also say $100,000. You should just ask. If the price is too high, THEN show him your numbers and make the offer. That is only smart business. TomG. |
