Do you think advertising on classified sites are productive?

I know that many people make a good living, buying and reselling products on classified sites like CL and BP. Do you think that it is an effective way advertise? And do you think the other classified sites have enough quality traffic to deal with? One more, do you think they are good for selling electronic products?

Follow the link in your signature to advertise whatever it is you want to sell. Seriously, you're offering a classified posting service yet you don't have enough data or experience to know if posting ads on such sites is even a viable option?

Sheesh! Hope your clients don't see this thread.

I'm all for asking questions so I'll give you an answer.

YES posting ads on sites such as CL can be an effective way to successfully "conduct arbitrage" BUT (big but) you need to use trending tools to identify what's selling well in what market. You then also try to forecast what is UP AND COMING.

A lot of the time, getting in first (or early) goes miles in that type of business.

Next, you need a SOURCE for whatever it is you decide to sell that's both CHEAP and reliable. It's a "needle in a haystack" but pays dividends when you find one.

Remember, arbitrage has no borders. You'll likely find both markets AND sources outside the boundaries in which you live. That's ok - it's how you make real money.

Lastly.... ELECTRONICS: yes they sell well (hint: rhymes with "Snapple")

Yes advertising on Craigslist and Backpage can be very effective it all boils down to finding a category for your target market you used electronics as an example.

Very competitive but a ton of buyers just stand out from the crowd.

yup vijay..I agree with you 100%.Selecting a category in the classifieds is a tough task rather than posting.

It is good job to post the ads in the classifieds ads..It will pay for sure at times.

I think that if you study your competition and deliver optimized ads, you will get your share. You will need a better marketing than your competition.

Yes, placing ads on CL, Backpage, USFreeads, OLX, etc. can be profitable.

If you have a good source to buy your electronics from and can re-sell at a profit, then by all means do it !

And don`t forget : online classified ads are not the only game in town. Try placing a classified ad in your local newspaper, penny saver, Thrifty Nickel, etc. (you might be surprised at the results).

I imagine the site in your signature isn't making much money for you. That should be the answer right there. Aside from Craigslist, no other classified site has been productive for me. I've even tried the Classified Ads Submitters on the internet that claim they will post your ad online - AND in the newspaper version so that you get mass exposure.

      Thanks for the input.

I am just trying to get the conversation going and find out what some of the warrior members think about classified advertising.

Obviously I like it and believe it is a good strategy to use for traffic and sales. I also know that there are large numbers of customers searching classified sites for answers and products.

When I referenced electronic products I meant to say information products in an electronic format vs. print.

I think that classified sites are underutilized. What do you think and what is your favorite method of advertising?

Some interesting posts and views, There are a lot of good places to get free information, sometimes that is a DIY site other times it could be a classified site, but to be honest, most of the time I believe that people do not take these sites very seriously.

The biggest problem is likely advertising, there is so much advertising that it just turns off prospects.

(a great example is a site called auctionzip.com)

They list auctions, (some off line and some online) but they have a nag...

(its a popup that opens on every single page,) it tends to annoy people so much that what is happening is they are basically shooting themselves in the foot.

The site also looks like 1999.

I think a lot of these sites make big marketing mistakes just like craigslist does.

You can advertise on craigslist for free but most of the time your more likely to get spammed than find a customer, that is a big marketing mistake...

I suspect that if done properly, social media might be more effective than some of these classified sites.

Your point is well taken Tim. I agree that many sites get carried away with aggressive advertising and turn many prospective customers off.

Also all of the spamming that goes on turns many advertisers off.

But on the other hand classified sites are a great tool to advertise to targeted groups. I personally use them when I am looking for a vendor for many "things".

In my opinion there are many more potential customers utilizing the sites than there are spammers harvesting links to advertise to.

Another audience your are capturing is the advertisers themselves when they are sizing up the competition or checking their ads or prices.

You have to be really clever the way you do it on craigs list. There should be tons of WSO's teaching this same thing if Im not mistaken.

I agree that it depends on what your trying to sell.
For exaple, I have bought many a phone on classified sites,
even rented houses and what have you.

I've also considered buying musical equipment like guitars keyboards
    and other things.

All in all, if what you have matches the what the demographic of the site is
looking for, you can do very well, but its still not as scalable as running a
    mostly digital business.

Your ability to write converting ads will be invaluable in classified advertising. There is a lot of competition in classified advertising, and the person who has the most compelling ads has the best chance

Do you think that by reviewing the ads that are in the classifieds already one can get a good idea of what will work?
