I'm offering my time to a site I'm helping (they know very little about making money with a site) and was wondering how to stop them from ripping me off?
I'm showing them how to optimize their site- -building a list (they get 1000 hits a day but aren't doing anything with their list and don't send their list ANYTHING) -creating content for them (to use as free info for their site) -Creating content for them to sell (ebooks) -I'll show them how to package their product/services But I am worried about getting ripped off by them -copying my products (then getting rid of me+my income) -If I tell them how to do the above and they just take my ideas and don't give me anything. -Doing loads of work and not getting paid. I sure they won't pay me in advanced (they make good money but are very tight) e.g. they WON'T spend any money on advertising. (but ALSO want me to send traffic to them. Can you help me please, I'm not sure what to do and I can't afford to earn other people money-I'm desperate for money myself. Thanks for your help with this-I don't know what to do because I'm a noob and am currently trying to make money online myself. |

You can try to set up some sort of payment contract where you agree to be paid weekly for the work you do. That way you don't lose too much if they don't pay you the first week.

I think a signed contract will be
the solution for this situation. Igor |

Hey JELL,
It may be too late with this particular customer, but be sure that in the future that you set it up so that you get some upfront money for all of your consulting.....50% is the norm. Your time is too valuable, and you don't want to end up spending a lot of time with nothing to show for it. |

Agreed with all.
Why not start charging him by the hour/day/week or you just stop helping them? Your time is not worthless: they have to earn your time! |

No offense, but I think this is a lousy way to do business. You are operating from a point of no trust. Thoughts like that have a nasty way of popping up in an unexpected way.
Now, I'm not suggesting you blindly trust everyone - that wouldn't be smart either. But rather use "trust with verification". It may be too late now, but from now on be sure to discuss your concerns (in a professional manner) and get a contract of some kind. All the best, Michael |

Are you doing this for free? You didn't mention whether or not you were getting paid. If you are getting paid, you should have a contract. If you're doing it for free ... Why? | |

you need to have a good contract set up and have a deposit and progress payments made regularly. It would be good to do a detailed quote before the job starts outlining exactly what is involved.
Is there an online escrow service you can use? also it is a bit unclear exactly what the job is, are they paying you to work on the site, which is payment for services, or are they paying you to teach them skills, which is training and much more expensive. first work that out for yourself so you are clear on it. Then charge accordingly. the good thing about this is that you are learning a lot with this that will prevent problems with similar jobs in the future. good luck with it
