I purchased a .net does it matter

Always getting ahead of myself I purchased a ".net" by mistake the ".com" wasn't available, like I said I was click happy and didn't realize this until later. Does this matter, what if the product I want to promote has nothing to do with the website name how important is this

I am just starting and I hope to be very successful so will be needing future advice thanks all.

I know I asked three questions in one, please reply fully thanks

If you're promoting a product, you definitely want .com and not .net. If your product name is not in your URL you will have to do lots of brand building.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

I don't think it is but would you care to let us know why you think it is? I'd be fascinated in your take on why the most popular commercial extension is the wrong choice for a commercial endeavour.

          Yes of course, I agree.

I said "this is definitely wrong" because, .net extension ISN'T an essential requirement to promote a product. You can make sales with .net extension as well.

That makes more sense but he was right (in my opinion) in saying that you definitely "WANT" a .com. He didn't say it was essential but I don't think it can be argued that a .com is better and definitely more desirable and someone should at least "want" one.

Your question wasn't that clear. Do you mean, the website you purchased, instead of '.com' you purchased '.net'? Is that it? Then that wouldn't matter at all. As long as you have the right website link that is related to your product etc. Also, it's the product and it's content that is more important. The link is just for them to click on, it's the content and your product which is important, it's how it delivers. Hope this helped!

You can answer this question by yourself....

If you ever need to type a domain name in the browser...Aren't you more accustomed with typing a .com than a .net after the domain name...?

.net is more authoritive if you are an organization like somewhat. If you just sell a product or serviceit would be better a .com domain do

Totally agree. Just try to build quality back links. You may even rank higher than the .com

I think it's fine if you are selling info products since most of the time your link are being mask by a button or something.

If you are building an authority blog then you might want to change it to .com instead.

The problem with .net is that you'll be sending free traffic to who ever owns the .com because people will be typing in .com by habit. If you can buy the .com then buy it and redirect one to the other but if you don't (or can't) then you'll be leaking traffic for sure.

As far as SEO purposes go there are obviously other factors at play and I've not seen a benefit from one or the other. I'd be most concerned about leaking traffic though.

It matters. 99?% of the time my brain will put a .com at the end of anything I type into the address bar even if I know it's a .net.

Same thing goes for all of the clever TLDs they are coming out with these days. I would never type in topic.guru for example...way to uncomfortable...

    It depends.

I didn't see it mentioned in any of the comments but it really depends on what you want to do and what is being done with the .com.

If you just want it for SEO to build an adsense or niche site, then it doesn't really matter. The keywords you choose and your SEO efforts will determine your results more than the TLD you choose.

The other thing is to look at what is being done with the .com. If you are trying to build a brand or an authority site that you want to market and build then you may have a problem if the .com is an active site also branding the domain. You could have problems in that case.

But if the .com is parked and/or not used and you just don't want to pay $1,000 to a domain hoarder then you could be okay branding under a .net as the .com is not competing as a domain.

There are many top sites that are branded as a .net

.com is a little better, but it doesn't make too much difference. If you are just testing an idea, stick with the .net and if it goes well, buy the .com (if you can) and redirect everything there. If you are certain that it will be profitable, buy the .com now if it is available.

Chris, last I checked .net and .com cost the same so what benefit would he get from buying the .net to "test"? If the .com is available always buy the .com (obviously) and if the .com is taken then buying the net will just send the .com more (accidental) traffic. If the .com is taken then he should choose a different name all together imho.

com is professional, most common extension for businesses more desirable than net. However, people don't think too much about the extension if the offer is important for them. The only trouble you get at the branding since majority of people are still familiar with com.
