eBook ??? Your Opinion Please!

If someone has a website in a niche such as acne and wants to develop an ebook for it of around 100 pages, is it best to stick to the niche topic of acne or is it fine to broaden the topic and cover skin care in general?

Or would it work as well either way ie an ebook on the niche topic of acne or an ebook on a broader topic like skin care in general?

Thanks!

Well, it's best to sell an ebook from a separate sales page and not have the only sales on the niche site. So if you hypothetically had a content site on acne and wanted to develop your own product then you should first start by selling an affiliate product to see if you can presell well enough to get sales, or if the market is hot enough to buy the product.

If you are selling an affiliate product then you'll want to think about your own product. You should be collecting email addresses from interested people and then have a market who can answer the question: what do you want to know? (surveyMonkey is a great site to get that done).

So the question isn't should the topic be broader but rather what is it that people want?

However, niche ebooks almost always do better sales than do broader topic ebooks. UNLESS the broader topic ebook is meant as a giveaway product to develop a list and bring in more people who are looking for a variety of niche topics which you can then develop.

    Hope that's somewhat clear!

I think that you could go either way. What I would do is buy some of the top ebooks in the niche and see what they offer. Then figure out how I could be better and different.

Shannon - You're absolutely right. That's the way. Actually, too, one of my favourite quotes around this is Goethe's:

"All that's worth saying has been said. our task is to say it again, and say it better" !

I have written an ebook on the connection between acne and diet and I sold only the ebook, but as a separate incentive I offered a few free pdf's as well. I think one was home made cosmetics and one was on detoxification by deep breathing techniques. I would say that you should concentrate on a niche and sell it. By all means write other e books and sell them separately or even do a composite price for three ebooks. However I would not myself make it too general because people who are looking for ance solutions are not looking for the same solutions as people who want to know what to do with dry skin. Acne has a lot of problems with scar tissue and long term problems of acne roasacea.however there is a place within the e book ffro skin care foe those that have acne in other words dont overwash or rub the skin because you run the risk of being reinfected

Others may not agree but that is two penny worth.

Actually my niche topic is not on acne...just used that for example. BTW la dominatrix how did you do with your ebook sales on acne. Just curious as my niche is specific like that also.

My idea was to give the ebook away to people who purchased one of my affiliate products and sell it to those who just wanted to out and out buy it. So hmmm maybe the broad topic would work well and since I have another domain name that fits I can make a squeeze page there...and use it for other affiliate sales and use it on my website as a free gift with purchase?

I did look at exisiting ebooks in the niche and they are dreadful.

    Here's my $0.02:

Many people are interested in skincare, but usually they have one or two issues they want help with - meaning a solution to.

    Acne, wrinkles, blotches, blushing, etc.

If I'm having a problem, I'll buy a product just about that - I don't need an entire eBook. People who have good skin and want to retain it are the ones who would buy an entire eBook about skin care (to maintain that youthful look, etc) - but they're not the ones with the pressing problems that make them whip our their wallets.

Your sales copy will have many leaking exit points. If they have acne and you're at a point in your copy where you're talking about dry skin, rosacia (sp?), blushing, wrinkles, etc., they're going to go, "this isn't the book for me - it only has a tiny bit on MY problem."

I agree - having 12 different info products across 4 niche markets and having had my share of failures as well as successes, it is clear that the more focus you have on solving a specific challenge, helping your customer achieve a specific desire - the more successful you will be.

Also - I have some direct experience with the skin care niche. I had a consulting client about a year ago who had tried everything under the sun to target this niche (more from a beauty perspective) and had a very hard time achieving any results.

What we worked on was taking her expertise and applied to one very specific skin condition - and wham - suddenly her ebook started selling.

Think like your customer - when they hop on the computer and enter search terms to find information that they are willing to spend money on...chances are it is quite specific and they are either being driven by a BIG dream or a BIG challenge - tap into those and you will sell lots of ebooks.

While Tiff is right on, here's my take...

I'd suggest you do both... go "wide" and go "narrow."

I know your niche is not really "acne" but since you used that as your example, I'll stick with it to explain what I would do.

I would first create the ebook on "skincare" and then I would go back through it and see what "narrower" topics could be broken out into shorter ebooks/reports.

You might come up with... acne, wrinkle reduction, etc. etc.

Since the content is already written, it would take little time to break each of these out and make them into more focused reports.

Then you could set each up on an individual website and use the others as upsell material.

    That's my two cents. ;- )

Sounds like you should check some forums on the topic to see what those people talk about. My guess though is that a general skin care ebook would be very long and too comprehensive to attract people with specific problems.

Another possibility is to do some keyword research to see what people are typing into google, for example. Just google search for the adwords keyword tool, and type in "acne" or whatever.

    Hold on.

    Take it easy.

Just start small and aim big. first, write a short report (about one point = 20 pages at most), and sell it for $10.

Next step: Take a second point and do what you did above again.

When you have 5 or six report, put everything in a bigger ebook and sell it.

Your first report can be about acne, and the second about skin care. Later on, you willl expand on the subject.

I fully agree with Frank, Better you can start selling short report on specific topic and start making some money then introduce one by one topic and later stage you put all information together and create All in one ebook.

I could not find much in the niche after looking on clickbank and doing a search. The two on clickbank had a very low gravity also but there is a lot of interest in this topic. I read the PLR ebooks on the market on this topic and they are dreadful. And that was about all that was out there.

I got to thinking since I am exploring this topic in depth on my website....maybe I should offer a related book instead of more of the same thing. For example if my topic was How to Lose Weight the ebook could be on something like How to Look Slimmer in Minutes and cover looking slimmer by wearing certain clothes etc. ...in other words an ebook not directly on the topic but a related idea that visitors to the site would be interested in.
    Thoughts?

Also the shorter report idea does seem like a very good one!

You are right by thinking of additional positioning around a general topic.

If there's nothing on Clicbank - then check Amazon for ideas on positioning and potential. Also - check Ezine Articles - pick the category that most closely relates to your market, click on an article, then scroll down and you will see the Top 10 most popular articles, the top 10 most published articles which will give you a strong clue as to potential positioning within the marketplace.

Better yet - test a few of your ideas by writing artilces and posting them to Ezine Articles - monitor your "open" results - that can tell you allot about what will be in demand.

I recently wrote an article on one aspect of weight loss that accumulated 5,000+ clicks over a very short period of time - others lingered in the low hundreds - I knew I was on to something big.

By positioning do you mean focusing on the niche as opposed to the broad idea?
