Does Wordpress Ping When a Comment is Published?

I was wondering if Wordpress Pings it's pinglist by default when a comment is published in order to alert the world that there is new content on that post?

If not, does anyone know of a plugin that enables this ability?

Yes -- If you have some ping sites installed.

By default, there is one already there.

I would suggest getting rid of that and finding a list of ping sites you can install.

Do a google search for ping lists and copy and paste one into WP.

Comments, usually, are not considered "new content" - so, no, there is no pinging when new comments are added.
Never heard of any plugin doing that...

      I stand corrected.

I missed the 'comments' part and assumed you meant a general post.

Even if a plugin existed to send a ping each time a new comment is posted, I wouldn't consider using it. A site could easily be banned by the pinging services because of possible pinging abuse (or spamming)

      Stefan Vee,

I had considered that, but I would look to use the MBP Ping Optimized plugin to limit the site to not send out more than one ping every 90+ minutes to avoid over-pinging.

Is that plugin still up-to-date? Looks like they are mentioning WP 2.3 as the latest version

This is unlikely unless you're sending requests where it's obviously automated such as in a set pattern (once every second). Unless you're getting a huge number of comments, this isn't going to happen.

        Stefan,

I install that MBP Ping Optimized into my site very first thing. It keep a log of when it pings and when it blocks, and it works on all of my sites right now.

One of the hidden benefits to it is in setting up the site. I don't like my blog to ping at ALL until I want it to be found by the search engines. So I turn pinging off until the site is ready to be indexed, at which point I turn it back on.
