Headlines = Cornerstone of good copy. Information overload and the completely ridiculous oversupply of entertainment everywhere we turn (TV, YouTube) that we are facing nowadays force us to become excellent at filtering important from unimportant information (at least we try to). As skimming is becoming more and more normal, great headlines will become even more important than they are now. (And they are incredibly important already. )Oh, and btw, I liked the style of your post, Colin: Short and to the point. And you gave a banging example. Way to go! |

Just thought I'd add a little case study to this conversation... I have a splash page where I give away freebies in exchange for an email address (unique I know). It's all video, so there is very little on the page apart from the video, and an optin box. I thought I should split test having a few different headlines in there (initially I had none). With no headline, I was getting an optin rate of about 38%. I tested about 15 different headlines (had plenty of traffic, so the results were meaningful), and found that my optin results ranged from about 35% to 50%. For those that are more right brained, going from 35% to 50% is NOT a 15% increase, it is a 43% increase... because 50 is 43% higher than 35 (I hope that makes sense). To sum that up, with no changes except for the headline, I saw a 43% difference in optins. |

Quality headlines is good but if you use false advertising, the only thing you will get is bulk trafic and not targetted traffic.

Headlines are key in so many areas, not just sales pages. Forum posts, article titles, and product names are examples of additional ways to employ "headline thinking" to attract interest. Intriguing, eye-grabbing titles that at least hint at the details provided inside attract the exact target audience you want to reach. But using an attention-getting approach to interrupt the focus and others and pull them inside your copy/post/product without revealing the true subject isn't something I would recommend. Duping people is self-defeating. Time is precious and interests vary widely. At the same time, we're presented with an ever-increasing amount of fodder we need to sift through. Headlines should serve both the the writer and the audience. The writer gains a receptive ear; the audience discovers information that's on target with their self-interests. |

Wow, interesting results. What I think is the most important thing to take away here is that the devil is in the details: If you do not get the desired results, just try to tweak little things till everything works. Sometimes it's just the color of a text, the position of the opt-in box, or, as in your example, Artsub, the headline. | |

Good one! This reminds me of a statement made by a successful marketer some time back. The headline is the most important part of the marketing piece because it is the ad for the ad. If the headline does not do its job, it does not matter how good the rest of the copy is because nobody will read it.

I agree that headlines are very important to any copy; articles or ads. The headline is like the aroma of food; when it smells good, you are more than willing and faster to savour the food.

Put excitement into the headline. For example "How to make $1000 in a day!" Of course, this must be true and you need to explain how to do what you wrote in the headline. |
