A newbie wanting to improve - but how?

6 months ago I got my first full-time marketing job at a start-up. My role is, mainly, content- and social media-marketing.

I have a background journalism with a Bachelor's degree in the same subject. I've also studied copywriting at an advertising school for a few months, but that's it.

During these past six months I've read countless online resources and refined the content and social media strategies. In spite of this, I still feel that my output could be a lot better and I fear stalling in my progress. Or just that I'm missing something vital.

As of now, the basics look like this:
  • Post content on B2C-blog
  • Promote content through social media
  • Track metrics

Social media following has not increased as much as I would have liked by far, and monthly traffic to the blog is still below 5,000.

(There are other content channels in the works as well, but not active at this moment.)

I would definitely like to better understand where, and how, I could improve. But I feel I don't have the expertise for that yet.

How do I proceed from here?

Should I look for a mentor? Take an online class? Any solid books I should get my hands on?

I currently have a budget of around $1,000 for any books, classes etc.

I hope I haven't provided too little information, and any advice is more than welcome!

Thanks in advance.

With your background in writing and copyrighting then you should try guest blogging for the top top blogs in you're niche.

You can then build your traffic and social network fans through your bio.

Top blogs can get thousands of daily visitors and if you provide a quality inspiring article then people will follow you.

I agree with the comment above guest blogging on related top blogs in your niche is a good starting point for really increasing your monthly visitor count.

Once you start seeing results rinse, and repeat.

In the process concentrate on building up your social networking base like your Facebook fan page, Twitter following, Linkedin connections, Googleplus, etc...

The traffic will come you just have to be persistent with your efforts which I know you will be

Hi Pontus and congrats on taking action.

I would start searching for people in the same niche and start to partner up. Exchange links, exchange facebook status updates.

Another thing, I recommend you start building your list of subscribers.

I would say to get a mentor because you have the knowledge you just need the guidance. A mentor with lots of experience and proven track record is way more valuable than any ebook/course

Ok so you had some sound advice from everyone. Let see what I can add....

so first you need to take action on the first advice you were given.. Blogging done right can be a very effective way to building an following but if you pair it up with a youtube channel and Facebook fan page then your on to a winner as both facebook and youtube have a high level of traffic generation. I have done this and it works.

Then you need to understand your niche and your target audience. Are you giving them value? Are you giving them a reason to interact and engage. Remember your a brand now and you want to become a profitable one. So with that said, have a look at what your trying to promote and put yourself in their shoes.... is it a quality product? Or is it doing more harm to your brand than good.

Look to mix it up when interacting with your list. 2 emails a week was enough for me and dont forget you have a fan page which you can interact with them on a daily basis. I used to do a monthly hangout with my followers which proved to be a lot of fun. Why? Because from my followers prospective they saw that I was a real person who actually care and appreciated them but for me it gabe a chance for some constructive feedback on how I could improve as a brand.

there is so much more you can do but one thing you dont need to do is spend money needlessly. No need to panic. Take a step back and analyse your current and future position.

Good luck and if you need anything or have a question please feel free to ask.

You need to keep it simple.

You're in a better position that most new entrants to the industry. I spent 7 years at university and I thank my lucky stars that I did so. Not that you need it, not that you can't become extremely wealthy without such an education, but it certainly gives you an edge - especially, of course, if your education is in a field related to online marketing.

That being said - you need to stop over-thinking and develop a basic plan. Specifically: You need to find a working system. That's it. Get a working system, spin it, maximize its earning potential, outsource, and move on. Move on where? To the next working system, of course. Repeat this, you'll do well. You'll make more than most.

      Pontus,

You know what I would do?

I'd start an online business in my spare time at home. Keep your day job.

There is no way to learn Internet marketing faster or better than to immerse yourself in it by having your own business. Classes and reading books will help you to learn the theory and the principles . . . but applying them in a real life situation will give you first hand knowledge and experience which is a far better education.

You will be able to transfer the understanding and wisdom you gain to your day job - but you will also be building a personal asset that will bring you extra money and maybe eventually surpass your day job income.

Internet marketing is very much a hands on career. You can learn the ideas and strategies in your mind but there really is no better way to internalize the lessons of IM than to jump in and get your hands dirty by doing.

      I wish you the best,

      Steve

Very good answer bySteve. Experience is the best teacher and doing it for yourself first and making a success out of it will open doors of opportunities.

Its like going to find a personal trainer at your local gym.

You have one who has phd in kinesiology but skinny without muscles vs another trainer has formal certification only but has great physique and matured muscle density.

Which trainer would you sign up with?

Start with blogging or writing about your niche. Since you are a writer and you have an edge, generate content and make it regularly. This would help generate traffic. Maximize what you have. Also read tips and tricks online, there are many.

You say "track metrics" . . . a detailed analysis could provide some interesting learning, for example, which particular pages got most visitors . . . can you see why? Which pages provided most sales, and is it clear why?

So it's what you DO with the metrics, and how you relate them to your aims, that will help guide you.

The only thing you can really trust is what happens in practice, for you. What someone else says will happen, what a method or mentor says is their experience, etc. don't matter much if you can't get the same results they do. So make sure your focus is clear . . . listen to others and experiment with what they recommend, see what happens in practice, ask more questions, etc. but getting reliable results that you really understand is the key to further progress.

Some of what I am saying might be obvious, some of might might seem "obvious" but if you look at what you actually DO in practice (as distinguished from what you intend to do or think you do!) you might learn some interesting things

I would have to agree with Steve as what he said made a lot of sense. One thing im sure of is that you have to make this work and not become a what if

I would recommend to reverse engineer successful people. Follow what successful people do to get the same results!

Just search for the best and most successful blog in your niche in Google and take a look around to see hat they are doing to get better results and more traffic.

    Hope it helps

There is also a forum on here specific to Copywriting. There are groups out there related to product creation. Also, look into article marketing. Sean Mize is the guru to follow on this. It can be powerful, perhaps not as much as it used to be, but if you place links to your blog, deliver true follow, then you can create a following. Look at copyblogger.com they have excellent free resources.

Send me a PM if you want to know more specifics. Be more then happy to help more.

I find using YouTube and telling your story of your successes in IM is important. After all YouTube and Facebook advertising are arguably the best ways to promote what you do on the internet.

Honestly Pontus, these are questions you should be asking your employers at the internet start up. And if they don't know the answers, then you need to find another job. Because think about it; you're seeking growth and the company can't help you do that...so what good are they?

Now, that doesn't mean you should quit since a paycheck is a paycheck, but keep your eyes open and actively seek new opportunities. It also sounds like you're young so take chances...the worst you can do is fail. That's okay though, because failure is the best teacher you'll ever find.

I read every day something new. And collect all new methods to a file.
If I have enough information about method, I try to use it. If I don't understand something I seek for a mentor.

    Hello,
having a mentor is not necessary, sometimes reading tips, watching information in youtube may help you, maximize your articles, your knowledge in writing and taking notes of information is the best for you.
