In the AP news today there was an article called Recession Doesn’t Slow Down Dating, Matchmakers Find. It talked about an interesting point. Matchmaking stuff online and otherwise is BOOMING. Why? They say that people are depressed, broke, etc., they’re seeking a way to feel good – and first time dates give you those flutters of excitement and happiness. Plus, they say men can spend $100 buying a woman drinks if he’s single for entertainment, or sit home and relax with his girlfriend with a bowl of noodles for next to nothing – so for financial health, they’re trying to pair up. Funny! eHarmony found that when stock news plummets, etc., searches and memberships grow on their site. Same thing whenever something tragic happens. Why all the connections between stress/money/and romance? People get reminded to concern themselves with what’s really important in life. Tiff |

There's a connection between stress and "relief." We had a pretty significant spike in births 9 months after Hurricane Ivan here in Pensacola. Maybe their findings are part of the same trend... |

Also, maybe people gravitate towards different sources of happiness during different times. When money is tight (although it seems people are still spending!) people turn towards dating for a less expensive pleasure... but at the same time they'll still spend 100 bucks on a bottle of wine but *maybe* it's a more pleasurable way to spend that money. Maybe it's the cutting back on spending on luxury cars, holidays and unneeded appliances... and this goes into more fulfilling things like dating? |

I think we all like to feel secure in all aspects of our life. When something threatens our security we tend to look for something or someone to redirect our thinking and give us some peace of mind. Rewarding yourself with something you desire or enjoying the company of someone you connect with helps decrease your stress level, even if only temporary. That is assuming you can actually afford that reward and the people you are trying to have a relationship with do not create more chaos in your life. However, some may view all of the above as avoiding reality. |

"sit home and relax with his girlfriend with a bowl of noodles for next to nothing" Yeah but they won't let you search for the women using this criteria they only line men up with ones who can sink 2 or 3 $100 bottles of wine a night |

I think it's a coping device..A way to handle all of this craziness going around us. It gives us relief even just for a moment. To connect with someone else..and be able to forget the desperation. IMO usually in our most stressful moments we seek relief through the company of the opposite gender.. I myself am most motivated when I feel loved or in love. oMar P.S. I think I should look into that area eh?$$ | |
