Have you noticed that the original, old-fashioned Art Of Communication appears to be dying out?

I took a train journey the other day. The train was packed full. Lots of interesting people from all walks of life. Beside me a young guy sat listening to his iPod. Opposite me a middle-aged woman had her head stuck in a book. Across the aisle a girl was furiously texting.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when the old man spoke. I was so busy preparing a speech inside my head that I hadn’t even seen him sit down…

Nobody else even seemed to hear him speak – but I did. And I responded. We had the most wonderful chat for the remainder of that journey. What a lovely old man he was and how much I would have missed if I had remained where I was, stuck in my own little world…

Sometimes we’re so busy “communicating” – whether it’s by text, email or in writing that we forget to TALK to real live people right BESIDE us. We’re so busy looking for business opportunities that we don’t see what’s right under our noses.

Imagine you love Fishing and you’ve chosen that as your Niche. You create your own website, write a short ebook about Salmon Fishing to offer free and you begin to build your List. You begin studying various ways of driving traffic to your website…

You take a day off to go fishing yourself. You need bait. You go to the shop, choose what you want, hand over the money and leave.

But WAIT A MINUTE…

How many opportunities have you just missed?

You could have told the shop owner about your new business and left your website address, you could have talked to that man standing in the queue behind you…

See what I mean?

First of all are you sure you're NOT "some kind of pervy weirdo"? LOL.

Quite a few of the friendliest people I've met were from the UK so it's not your country and I guess that just leaves the London Underground to blame.

One thing I have noticed.

If you're in that kind of situation and you persist in making friendly conversation often you break down that wall quite quickly and people will start talking to you (try it next time you're in public and the people around you can't get away from you for a time and you'll see what I mean).

It just takes a little longer to break down the walls someone might have in the London Underground or Sydney train system than somewhere cruisy like San Fransisco or the city I live in in Cairns.

It is true that we're losing the art of conversation and that's a shame because on a list of the things that make people happy from several studies "talking to friends" came out near the top.

And yes there are huge business advantages in getting to know a lot of people...over time your list of contacts and potential contacts grows exponentially.

It's just the famous English "reserve". I'm Irish and I'm probably full of blarney!

Myself & my husband have noticed though that although English people on holidays will not very often make the first move, whenever WE take a chance and speak to them first - they turn out to be really friendly!

Yes, I totally agree. Talking to friends is the only thing that really helps me if I'm feeling a bit down

It seems to me that the art of conversation is being lost due to texting, emails and other electronic advances that prevent us from conversing. I try to initiate conversations. Sometimes I’m successful, sometimes not. It is really a shame that quality conversation seems to be fading.

For example, I remember a conversation I once had with a gentleman I did not know. I was so impressed with his knowledge of Russian politics and history that a inquired as to how he came to have so much knowledge. He informed me that not only was he a retired Russian Colonel, but that he had spent 15 years with the KGB. This gentleman was a gem of a conversationalist and I would never have had the opportunity to converse with him had I not initiated a small chat.

It's hard to find people who are open to conversation. Most seem to shut themselves off to the world around them, especially around my area. I don't even know the neighbors across the street and I've lived here almost two years.

I think it's sad actually.

I was invited to a networking function next week by a client, but of course next week is not a good week for me. That would have been a good place to reach out offline.

A few years ago I had a holiday in San Francisco, (great place, great people), and talked to strangers everywhere. Waiting for buses, on buses, in the street, you name it. I even spent a couple of nights hanging out with a homeless guy at the chess tables down Market Street.

Isn't it funny how people feel more comfortable reaching out at an "official" networking function - like as if we feel that we've been given official permission to be "pushy" - or what we often consider to be pushy in an everyday situation?!

Offline marketers will pay a lot more for your services and i have had endless offline customers approach me especially from america when their business has been hard hit and they need a good boast in traffic.

But the best bit about the offline marketers is that they will provide you with constant word of mouth recommendations which i personally love!

Sometimes it is require to contact with the offline to increase the sale on online. That is kind of oral marketing, you telling people face to face about your product and where it should be found and than they will visit your site and thus increase your online sales so your money.

I love talking to people when I'm out and about. I recently on the bus and a gentleman sat next to me and took out his Kindle to start reading a book. I have been wanting to see a Kindle and get more information about it because I love to read and have been thinking about getting a Kindle.

Of course by the time his stop was reached I had gotten all the information I needed on the Kindle.
