Are you aware that the default pingomatic - Ping-o-Matic! - already pings most of the places in your list? (check out at the URL above)
If you add new ones, try to avoid "double pinging"!

Yes, that is what I want to avoid is "double pinging". So you do you recommend I ONLY use Ping-O-Matic?

Hi Dayne,

I don't think anyone knows for sure how many sites to use. I use a list like the one in your original post.

Smart update pinger plugin or similar is the most important thing - it stops you pinging when you edit a post.

I didn't say to use only pingomatic - what I am trying to encourage is to be selective when adding new items to that list.
Obviously, places like technorati, feedburner etc. that are already pinged by pingomatic should not be added again.
However, I am sure you can find other "pingmachines"

that would not cause repeated pings on the same sites.

I guess, my simple advice would be: always watch for overlaps/duplicates when adding new sites.

In my opinion don't worry about pinging other services other than the default ping-o-matic. Adding more links to your ping list doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference.

The main thing to look out for is duplicate pings caused by re-editing your posts.

For this I use the MaxPingOptimizer plugin.

Done. Now I have ping-o-matic in the "Writing" section in the blog under Settings and also have ping-o-matic in the plugin settings as well, is this right to have it in both spots?

Yep, That's how mine are set up. For instance if you were to put more links in the update services section of the writing settings the MPO plugin will update itself with whatever services you add in there.

I have a huge rpc ping list here, but it may overlap what you've already got. I would suggest putting all the ones you find in a text file and eliminating duplicates.

That's why i don't bother messing with the ping list. The ping relay services like ping-o-matic and pinggoat can change the services they ping. This could cause you to be double pinging the same service with each post. If one of these ping services interprets your duplicate pings as spam you could get blacklisted from all of them with out even knowing it. IMO it's not worth the risk just to add a few more meaningless sites to the ping list.
