How Much To Charge For Optimizing Site For Mobile?

I will be optimizing a medium-sized article & news website for mobile, for a client. I'm about to send him an estimate, but I'm still unsure whether the price I'm charging is fair (both for me, and the client).

I would like to stay away from charging by the hour; I'd rather my pricing be more based on value to the customer instead of just the time I put into it.

So, what range should I be looking at here? Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, it depends. But I'm not asking for a concrete number, just a ballpark figure. I want to be sure my price is fair.

One way of finding out would be to post a fixed-price job-request on oDesk for the same job, at your guess of the price, and you'll see if freelancers on average bid lower or higher than your guess. That can be a good way to find out what the going rate is

Optimizing for mobile costs me between 50-150. Hope this helps.

That is about half of what I imagined. Perhaps this is due to me being based in the US?

Like you said it depends mainly on the level of functionality. IMO the price can be anywhere between $200 and $1000+.

But since it's a medium-sized news website, just "optimizing" won't be enough and you probably have to create separate mobile site, right?

If that's correct your initial though of charging $300+ is more than reasonable.

You could post a project on freelancer.com:

I do know that there are also a lot of low quality developers on freelancer.com but with a few tweaks on creating your project it's easy to pick out the good ones.

          Creating your project
          • Make the custom budget between 150 - 400 (Or any other budget)
          • Buy the 'sealed' extension (costs 9$ I think)
          • Make a prepaid milestone of 30$ or something

The sealed is to make sure that freelancers won't just big 1 dollar less than their competitors, for bigger projects than 200$ I always do this.

The prepaid milestone is so the your project has that nice seal in the project discovery which will attract more freelancers!

No one here can answer your question.

But I can tell you how to get the answer.

I have a development agency in my portfolio. We stick to local business. (Within about 100 miles of the offices). When you price anything, you have to take into account the prices charged by others. You might charge $10,000 for one job in one location; $1,000 for the same job in another. So - look at your competitors.

Thanks for all your responses. In case anyone's wandering, I ended up charging the client $200. I see now that it would have been wiser to stick with the original price I've had in mind, seeing how disheveled the site actually is. Nonetheless, I think it's a fair price. After all, I'm still an intermediate in terms of doing web design as a business.

Anywho, the project's almost done, and the client seems happy with it so far.
