The only success I've had selling a product was with one that I created myself. I knew everything about the topic, I knew it was a good product, and it has positive reviews. I was able to effectively answer any questions associated with the topic. With all of this, I still was only making a couple sales a week.

How do you guys create or promote a product if you don't have extensive knowledge in that field? I don't see how anyone could effectively promote something that don't really believe in, use, or know much about. Unfortunately, because of this I also find it almost impossible to find things to promote. Any tips appreciated, thanks.

Creating products is the easy part, actually getting anyone to BUY them is the challenge, as you are finding. If you are making a couple of sales a week, you are doing VERY well compared to almost all other product creators, although a few do make big bucks.

As for not promoting products unless you trust them, I think that's a good approach, so here's an idea which might help . . . on Amazon, almost all of the customer reviews are written by real customers who have bought the product and used it for a while (there are a few fake ones but not many). So presumably you could be an Amazon Affiliate because you could write totally honest product reports giving details of how the product compares to alternatives for particular uses, from what real customers have said after using the product. Amazon affiliate work is, in my experience, the most reliable IM method, it's not the easiest, it won't make you a million on your first day, but if you stick to the basic method (I wrote on another thread yesterday exactly how to choose which Amazon products to write about) you will make money. And it's one of the most honest approaches, as you get paid for giving genuine help to people to understand better which product to buy (or which not to . . . if a product sucks, then say so with total honesty BUT say WHY it sucks and recommend an alternative product which does not have those faults).

As for selling your own product, there are people who can help you do that and get 6 figures from a launch . . . they typically charge $500 or so in advance, take 6 months to do it, and only work with products over $97, but that might be worth considering. How they do it is they know the owners of big lists, and get the products on those, giving good affiliate commissions, so it is possible to do that yourself, starting with smaller lists, tracking the conversion percentages, improving the results, then going to the bigger ones etc.

Another suggestion . . . have you put the product on JVZOO . . . I had a product on my own site, sold one copy in 3 years, then put it on JVZoo and sell one or two a month. If you give a good commission (I give 50%) you are likely to get some sales from there.

Other than that, selling your own product on your own website . . . you need to do what you can to improve all the factors, and that includes getting relevant traffic (have you tried Article Syndication or blog guest posting which is similar . . . lost of good threads here explaining how to do those), doing JV's with relevant partners (have a look on the JV forum), creating your own affiliate program and offering good commission to big sites with relevant but non-competing products?

Are you offering different levels of the product, such as the addition of personal coaching or forum membership for a larger fee, or some other addition? That way you should be able to make more profit from the same visitors . . . some people will want personal help or more detail or whatever.

Have you thought of offering a free chapter of your product to get more visitors . . . you could upload that free chapter to file-sharing sites, make a YouTube video out of it, etc.

    Hope those ideas help

    Chris

I have created a few products in the past myself.

You just have to BELIEVE in it and you have to have a plan on how to market it. While you do that, you also want to collect name and email of people who are coming to your site because the FORTUNE IS IN THE FOLLOW UP. You must capture leads and follow up with prospects.

I agree with this. Build your list, even if all your doing is providing valuable content to your list in the beginning, make sure the content is geared toward your product and once you've built a relationship with your list, then promote your product to them. As far as other products to promote, find products that are related or can work with your product.

If you are making a couple of sales a week on your own then you are doing great. You should start looking for affiliates to promote your product. Have you created a JV page, are you offering good commissions to promote your product? Any product owner should try to get affiliates to help promote their product.

You're off to a great start man.

It doesn't all happen at once - just continuously split test and tweak your funnel until you get higher and higher conversions.

Get those EPC's, show them to affiliates and your sales will go to the next level. Trust me.

Sorry dude but I got to say you got the wrong mindset...

The fact is you are afraid to make money, true story.

As marketers or sales people (which is what we are really). Our number one goal is to sell products. There are thousands of products on Clickbank...

You can literally promote anything you want. You don't have to have any knowledge about the product or believe in the product. Of course, promoting a good product is a must but as marketers, we need to have knowledge about our Market Audience NOT the product.

Well there must but a useful and good product in your niche, something that people want otherwise just get off that niche. If everything sucks in a niche then you cannot promote anything.

Like you said I only promote products I believe in, otherwise it's just very hard and I actually feel bad about promoting crap products. Not surprisingly usually they don't sell well

You can purchase the product if you're not sure whether it's good or bad.

It takes much more than just believing in your product to make a TON of sales.

Good job on your current success. But let me ask you this really important question...

If you know the only thing you truly believe in are your own products, and you know you CAN sell them, even though you aren't selling a LOT right now... why would you look for an affiliate product and not create another of your own?

I've been in the same boat in offline sales jobs and online too... it can be difficult to promote something that you don't truly believe in, and I've left a few sales jobs because I didn't believe in the products being the best choice for the customers.

So ... why would you settle for crap now? The answer is, you won't. But how do you make more money with the niche you're currently in and how can you create more products that will genuinely help those people do or accomplish more?

Forget about looking for a product from some shameless marketer who thinks his only goal is to sell stuff they don't care about, and start asking yourself, how can you motivate the people in your niche to accomplish more than they currently are, and how can you create paid products to help them achieve those goals?

You should have at least 3 products in your sales funnel if you don't already.. build that sales funnel to offer more quality help to the people you currently have and focus on creating great products they enjoy and benefit from. That's the difference between a really successful marketer and an affiliate marketer.

Thanks for all of the help and kind words about my sales results. My current product is being sold on JVzoo and I have had affiliates sign up but I have not received one sale from them.

You might be right, that's why I started this thread to ask for advice. I don't think I'm afraid to make money though. I've made money but it's difficult to do it consistently.

The reason I don't create another product is because I don't have another idea that I'm as confident about. It took me a long time to create my first product and I don't want to commit that kind of time if I'm not confident about it. Thanks.

I think you're absolutely right, you shouldn't promote products you are clueless about or only have very limited knowledge on.

The only thing you can do really to overcome your problem is to actively test things out and increase your knowledge about different topics. That way you can give an objective opinion on the products you promote, and also answer enquiries if needed.

So yeah it's all a matter of experience in my opinion...

Remember, simple sells. Is every cook in the world who drops a hamburger on a grill an expert chef? No. Absolutely not.

He also didn't know how to cook that hamburger until he was taught. How long to wait to flip it, how to make it medium vs. medium rare, etc.

If you decide to create a product on a topic, you DON'T need to be an expert right off the bat to sell something on that topic. Do your research, become very well acquainted with the information you want to teach, and most important, make sure it is high quality and actionable.

You will be lost if you keep trying to "find" something you can teach to people if you don't have extensive knowledge in one particular area.

For example, perhaps you want to release a product on generating traffic. Now focus all your energy on how to generate traffic. Try out all the ways you find and take screenshots of the results.

Now you have direction, will learn a lot about your topic of choice, and because you tested, you can put the results in your sales letter as proof.

It's not your job to be in love with the product. Your job is to find
those who are... simple as that.

As a product creator offering yourself to the public as an expert on
a particular subject it's your duty to know what you're talking about.

As an affiliate for someone else's product your job is simply to find
people interested in the topic and directing them to the product creator
who is the expert on that subject.

I don't think you are alone iconoclast! Many probably struggle with the fact that they know they are pushing a crappy product.

That's a struggle? How do you expect to succeed if you know you are promoting "crap?"

AS for the OP; I made the most of my money online from something I knew nothing about in the beginning. I educated myself.

    I can promote anything. I won't, but I can.

Do your research and put it in your own words.

if the offer you're promoting is great then your affiliate manager or product owners are the experts on the product typically. They can give you the demographic information, the swipe copy, and any supplemental material that will help you sell the product.

so you literally don't need to know anything about the products.

don't let "knowing" it all box you in

To create a good product, you need to know your market, the problems people are having, what is being offered to solve those problems, and then create your own product that is unique and fills the gap in the market, teaching the extra 10% that other products don't teach.

You can become an expert by studying your niche. As regards to choosing products to promote, sure, yuo need to always go through the product yourself and if you are getting results with it and if yuo know it's valuable then promote it. There are a lot of good products on the market.

      Hope that helps...
